: benefits of a diesel
iusebow 05-03-2004, 08:32 PM Hey everyone,
could you guys please inform me on the benefits of a diesel besides the amount of torque. I've been a gasser myself for a long time and was thinking about switching to a newer duramax. figured since you guys all have them you could tell me if I oughta go for the diesel of the 6.0. I dont do a lot of heavy pulling but am for sure looking at a 3/4 ton. just can't decide if I should stick with a gas or go for a diesel. thanks alot
DavesDmax 05-03-2004, 08:40 PM This is my second 3/4 ton truck and the first with 4WD. I get about 17mpg unloaded for a 7000 lb truck. My old truck was a 2wd reg cab and weighed 2000 lbs less and couldn't get over 13 mpg. It was a reworked 350 motor.
Along with the benefits of outstanding towing capabilities, you get the bonus of really good fuel mileage.
I'm never going back to gassers. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
Max Power 05-03-2004, 08:43 PM You will also have a better resale value on a diesel. It usually makes up for the extra cost up front.
Be warned, once you own a diesel you will never go back.
Mackin 05-03-2004, 08:50 PM Torque Torque Torque and TORQUE ...
Resale value, longevity, fuel econo .... Cheap additional power making capabilities ...
Did I mention gobs of towing torque ??
True you wont go back ... Swore off gas in 93 ...

Mike L. 05-03-2004, 10:31 PM One more thing guys. When you hit a grade on the hyway, you will be alone at the top. Did i forget to mention you will be first also? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

My Duramax gets better fuel economy driving around town than my 6.0 Chev got on the hiway.
Now that I think about it I get about the same mileage 13-14 pulling my travel trailer with the Duramax that I got driving the 6.0 empty on the interestate..
Life is good, Duramax's are gooder.

In the future when the world's oil reserves are depleted, it’s possible that the only vehicles you will see on the road will be electric or diesel. We could end up getting vegetable oil diesel fuel from McDonalds or Wendy's... http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
Just imagine... your truck would run on the same stuff that cooked your french fries...http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif
Max Owner 05-04-2004, 01:20 PM Hey, Iusebow. IF you have a heavy foot, your mileage will be piss poor. If you can stick to the speed limits, your milage will be good. Mild starts, accelerations. The Max red lines at about 3300 RPMS. A gas pig will redline about say 6000 RPMS. 500 RPMS on a gas truck, is nothing. But on a Max, 500 is allot more substantial. (harder you push it, higher RPMS used, quicker the fuel gauge drops)
Also, if you plan on having a high mileage vehicle, diesels hold their value better.
You also have to pick and choose where you buy your fuel. Dirty fuel will cost you $$$$. Change your fuel filter, regulary. Diesel fuel additive won't hurt either.
Hope this helps. This is what I have learned from this forum.
403turbo 05-04-2004, 04:01 PM well call it the cool factor or whatever.....but something about the diesel engine clatter (quiet clatter, but still there) and the whistle of the turbo and with mine the puff of smoke, just makes me happy. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Thumbs Up.gif
Gassers have the great exhaust note......but us oil burners have a lot to listen to..........the sounds of power.........the turbo whistle usually hits about the same time that the BFG's start screaminhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif
WillowCreekStable 05-04-2004, 05:34 PM With gas and fuel prices where they are here, it costs me about $100 a week to drive the Dmax back and forth to work, $150 to drive the wifes 5.3 l Avalanche - did that for two weeks when one of my employees was on a road trip with mine.
I'll get 75% of the extra cost of the diesel back when I trade.
The 4" exhaust sounds as good as any gasser I've owned, at least when my foots in it and the Juice is turned up. When the cops are stopping the ricers with the fart cans, they don't even look at me. I'm a mature driver (OK, look the part...) with a workin' truck.
For $1,000 I got more extra performance than $5,000 will get you in a gasser.
Won't say my 7,000 lb truck is the fastest vehicle on the road, but I've never been embarassed no matter what I've run against. When the smoke clears the invariable reaction is WTF was that!!??
No contest - Diesel rules!
dslbrnr 05-04-2004, 05:49 PM In CA. you won' have to worry about smog checks, atleast for afew more years. Also no regular tune ups, just oil and filters.

BRUCE 05-04-2004, 07:02 PM Just took trip to Tenn. ran 2200 to 2500 rpms, (70 to 75 approx.) 20.5 mpg. This is 2wd cc lb7.
dmax lover 05-04-2004, 07:31 PM Here in portland, oregon, they oxygenate the gasoline in the wintertime - makes for poor performance and lower fuel mileage in the gasser through the winter months; Not something I have to deal with when I got the diesel...
Because of the temps here, I get diesel #2 all year round (unless there is a real nasty cold snap). Same power all year round and no crappy gas to deal with in the wintertime...

Topgas 05-04-2004, 09:12 PM They're right about never switching back, I tried and just couldn't do it. I ordered a 03 gasser, I wasn't dragracing my bike anymore (all over the country) and figured I didn't need the crewcab or the diesel for what I was doing locally. The dealer let me borrow a gasser for the weekend while I was waiting for my ordered gasser and was amazed at how gutless it was on the hilly roads in central Maine. Took the truck back and cancelled my order and had to reorder, starting the whole process over again,I'm very glad I did. I smoked a Hemi coming back from Maryland last week at 4:00 in the morning, he got on it hard and I pulled him so bad he didn't know what hit him. That limiter come up quickly......
