What are some good diagnostic scanners out there which will read/erase codes and provide live monitoring other than Predator and Stealth? I already have the Juice so I don't need another tuner.

I've seen handhelds as well as laptop driven ones. What are some advantages/disadvantages of both?

Tech II would be the best ....Last I seen Auto Tap just doesn't read all the diesel parameters ....

I would love to have a Tech II; if I had several grand to lay down on a diagnostic tool...

Me, I like the laptop driven stuff. I use WinALDL on my rock buggy and I love the way it works. OBD II stuff gets quite a bit more complex and expensive. For something on the level of a Tech II (functionality) for our trucks, is there a laptop product out there? If so, where and how much???

Around 2g. Ebay, GM, vetronix.com I think Eric mentioned once that he can get them at a pretty good price. You also have to buy the proper card for them.

Has anybody tried the Actron handheld one or any of the laptop-driven ones?

We have on of the actron obd2 scanners at work, it works on any obd2 to read and erase codes only. Not bad for the money. Works just fine.

What about the PC-driven one from www.obd-2.com?

I have the Actron CP9135 OBD II AutoScanner. Reads all the codes, got it at AutoZone for about $150.

Does it do real time data, or just codes? Does it do balance rates? Does it do other Diesel specific codes?

I just received the PC-driven one from obd-2.com and it sucks. It doesn't even read the codes like I was told it would. It reads the speed, RPM, IAT, ECT, MAF, and that's about it. It's going back...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Disapprove.gif

Also, will it clear the codes?

Did you down load the Everything Package? I have used this to clear Allison Codes and Engine Codes from leaving connectors unconnected while starting the truck. This past Jan. they added support for the Allison and Dmax.

I did download the everything package. Are you saying I need to plug it in before starting it?

It also set the "Security" light (constant) while I was just trying to see which real-time data was supported.

HypertechIII will read and erase em. Used on this forum or e-bay is probably around $150 to $200.

I have always plugged it in first. Never had the security light. My truck is a 2001. Have you had updates on the PCM?

I got an Actron CP9135 loaner from Autozone to check on my car. Plugged it into the truck and saw no codes. It will erase codes but probably not all the real high tech stuff. Here is a link for good prices, better than AutoZone, much better.

The actron will ONLY read and erase codes, no balance rates or real time data.

The CP9135 will erase codes and read them. Like White Dmax said it will not read real time data.

Jake,

I don't know if my truck (01 also) has had any PCM updates as I've only had it for about 7 months. According to the service history I got from Eric, it hasn't.

I played around with the program a little more and found the "Enhanced" codes section. When I checked all the boxes (historical, currently failing, failing since last key on, etc...), it was showing a lot of codes, but it didn't stay consistent, so I don't know how I accurate it is.

I'll have to take it with me next time I take my boat. I was seeing the SES light come on at the top of this big hill coming back from the lake every time. Maybe the "enhanced" section will catch it...

GM has an update to support generic scan tools.

<TD vAlign=center align=left>NEW SOFTWARE TO IMPROVE GENERIC SCAN TOOL OPERATION</TD></TR></T></TABLE>

This might help.
