: EGTs, Boost and Cold Air Induction Results
hasselbach 05-03-2004, 01:54 PM I am running an Edge Attitude, 4 inch exhaust in my federal 2003 dually duramax. (no cat or egr). Below are some test results we obtained comparing the stock air box with paper filter, stock air box with K&N filter, AFE stage 2 box, and lastly AFE modified (fitted to hood with foam to actually become a real cold air induction.. Please don't laugh at the foam in the picture, it is only a quick mock up set up).
The 0-60's were obtained from the Edge box, and ran 3 times to assure consistency. All runs made up a fairly steep street, 3000 foot altitude, stage 2 setting. My dually is a 4x4, with a shell and 4 people in the truck during testing. All runs back to back.
Stock box with paper:
EGT, 1214
Boost, 23.4
0-60, 9.3
Stock box with K&N
EGT, 1202
Boost, 24.2
0-60, 9.3
AFE with out cold mod.
EGT, 1177
Boost, 24.6
0-60, 9.1
AFE with modified box.
EGT, 1150
Boost, 25.6
0-60, 8.7
As you can see, getting cold air to the turbo is well worth the trouble. I also removed this horrible black asphalt and tin patch that the factory installs in the inner fender for noise cancellation. I really helped get the air in from the inner fender area.

Max Power 05-03-2004, 02:03 PM Your 0-60 times seem a low to begin with. What level were you running the juice/attitude in?
hasselbach 05-03-2004, 02:07 PM I was only running stage 2, but you have to remember, the truck is over 7500 pounds! Its a full sized dually, with shell, 500 lbs of tools in the bed, and 4 adults in the cab during testing. It was 90 degrees outside. The street chosen was uphill, since I wanted to load the motor more to see what the EGt's and Boost did. I've run without all the people and crap in the back, plus a level street at a more respecitible 8.0 0-60 since then.
Kennedy 05-03-2004, 03:24 PM If you did not seal the front vertical surface, that will also allow a bunch of prop wash in.
What did you do to the kit? Polished SS or chrome?
Trippin 05-04-2004, 04:30 PM Very pretty install! Nicely done.
Except for the prototype foam of course. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
hasselbach 05-04-2004, 04:50 PM Kennedy: What is prop wash? The reason we kept the front open was to take advantage of the high pressure area that exists above the headlight area. The tube was from AFE, but I stripped the horrible cheesy gray powder coating and had it chromed. ($200!, thanks to the EPA and OSHA). I realize that it probably will absorb more heat, but it looks good. I know a better tube would be something like a double walled insulated non-metallic assembly, but looks do count for something.
Trippin... yeah, the foam is bad, but it was something done super quick to see what the temps did in reduction. I'll post new pics when its done right.. how embarrassing
Kennedy 05-04-2004, 05:06 PM Prop wash= fan/rad air flow. You can feel it blow across the front of the assy. The seal at the top is definitely a good idea, but the front vertical wall doesn't seal up to the core support well either. Pretty tough to get a real seal, but every little bit helps.
The chrome looks nice! Really caught my eye as I thought I was missing something...
hasselbach 05-11-2004, 08:42 PM Okay, after looking at the horrible blue tape over foam, I cleaned up the system, see below, looks better. I have a hand held heat gun and found over a 100 degree drop in temps to the air filter with the cold air system vs. stock. Temp outside was 74, without cold air box I got air filter temp of 175 to 190,depending where I pointed the red dot. With the foam, with was a consistant 75-80 degrees to the air filter media.

Trippin 05-12-2004, 12:59 AM Wow, It looks great with the new sealer. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Thumbs Up.gif
FYI, I was at LACR one night and loaned a 4.61 HOT Juice to a guy with a stock 2003 crew cab dually. Empty bed with no shell, and headlight removed on his stock air box he ran a 15.55. This is just for comparison sake. Looks like your pretty close.Edited by: Trippin

sdaver 05-12-2004, 07:08 AM 25.6 IS THE MOST THE ATTITUDE WILL LET THE ECM SEE BOOST COULD BE HIGHER.......Nice chrome setup
hdmax 05-12-2004, 09:24 AM You should be getting pretty good at changing the air box out!
Nice setup. Give us a little bit of details on the final setup, Please!
ratlover 05-12-2004, 01:38 PM Wonder what a swisscheesed stock airbox with sealing such as yours and a yanked pass headlight would do? Just thinking aloud.....
What material did you use in your final?
