: Semi Wheels on a 3500?
kfowler05 06-04-2006, 10:35 PM I am looking at semi wheels for the dually I just bought and they said they fit without a lift. I'm sure they will but I pull a heavy trailer and I was wondering if the semi wheels would rub my fenders when the truck is loaded down. It looks like it would have to but I wanted to know if anyone had them on their truck. Thanks
DieselDel 06-05-2006, 07:09 PM When you say semi wheels... what diameter?
I am running the rickson 19.5" wheels with P225R70 mich all season tires. 06 2500HD CC longbed . No rubbing
Road Boss 06-05-2006, 07:30 PM DieselDel, do you have any pictures?
RickDLance 06-05-2006, 07:39 PM I saw a truck at the dealer today with 22's. Front torsions cranked up and extra springs in the back. They could not keep the transfer case seal from leaking. Had a lift pump, exhaust, cai, gauges, and I'm sure normally a chip.:)
Rcher 06-05-2006, 08:21 PM I run 19.5" wheels with 245/70's (33" tires). I have a 4" lift and have no issues with clearance. This upgrade is stout! I tow a heavy 5'er so wanted the added safety margin with the commercial truck tires. I have pics in my garage.

Without looking, I am guessing that TDP stores a few pics for us. Will do that this evening.

kfowler05 06-08-2006, 12:56 AM I was thinking of trying to fit 22.5 inch wheels and but air bags on the back because I pull trailers all the time. Think it will work or should I go witht the safe bet with the 19.5

You will most likely get a better ride with the 19.5's. Running 22.5's give you less sidewall because of the larger wheels. There are a couple of guys in the forum running 22.5" wheels and they say their ride really sucks. Mine isnt much stiffer than stock. No matter which way you decide to go, your gonna be spending some bucks!
bigdaddy650r 06-08-2006, 10:02 AM Get the 19.5's over the 22's, you won't regret it!

Did lifting your truck have any effect with pulling your 5th wheel? Was it neccesary to lift after you installed the wheels or were you just after the look? reason I am asking is I wanted to get a set of 19.5 but I was woried it might change the angle that my 5th wheel sits thus closing the gap between the rear edge of the bed and trailer. Not sure if it effected anything but I have a ranch conversion on my 5th wheel :blahblah:
Diesel Dragon 06-08-2006, 10:48 PM There's a set of almost new 19.5 rim's and tires for sale in the for sale section.

If you go with the 19.5" wheels and the 225/75/19.5 tires, you will find that they are approximately the same height as 235/85/16 tires, which fit with no problem at all. Also, be careful lifting your truck as there may not be enough clearance between the bedrails and the 5ver when hitched, especially when moving over uneven surfaces.

No, it had no affect on my towing capabilities. I wanted to get my truck level as a daily driver, I hate that steep rake GM builds into their trucks. I only lifted the front to get it level, no changes to the rear except I added air bags to "re-level" the truck after my 5'er is hitched. I have no clearance issues between truck rails and trailer, I have about 7" of clearance and can gain more by adjusting the 5th wheel or the hitch. My 5'er tows level and my truck sits level now.
Tire size will not affect the clearance between truck and trailer unless you do something real extreme. That distance is set by your hitch height and how far you adjust the 5'er pin up or down. Larger tire size will effect how level your truck sits compared to your trailer. The taller the tires, the higher your trailer will sit in the front.
rupertaker 06-13-2006, 07:55 PM Saw a set of 22'' Alcoas on a truck a few weeks ago and it looked killer.
okeehandyman 06-16-2006, 11:35 AM If you do a search of this fourum, you will find some posts by others that have explained the consequences of going to a really large wheel/tir combo. I had 19.5's on one of my trucks for a while and found some of those consequences to be absolutely true. Even the difference in braking was noticable when loaded heavy- when you need the best braking! Be sure to investigate your options before spending a lot of $.
STROKER SMOKER 06-16-2006, 07:37 PM Try this site. http://www.chromewheel.com/dominator.htm
You can get the 22.5" that most Freightliners run. Not to mention you can get anywhere from 150K to 200K out of a set of tires. Check out the site they have some wild looking stuff.
I have a set of 22" Alcoa wheels running 305/45R22 Toyo Proxes. I think they look really nice on my truck. I've towed with them a little bit too. I've towed a 34'+ flatbed trailer with my sandrail on it. The ride is a little rougher, but the looks of the truck is much better. I also noticed that whenever i had the trailer hooked to it, it did ride much better.
dwid45 06-26-2006, 01:51 PM Chech this pic out. This guy has 24.5 semi wheels and tires. shot it in mexico.

Good to hear it's where it belongs....
Duromax04 06-26-2006, 06:11 PM You will definatly reduce the effectivness of your brakes by putting on a large heavy wheel assembly. You have a lot more reciprocating mass out on the end of those axles, that you have to try and slow down. Those brakes are not designed for that wheel package and thus, that much weight. The other thing is that the springs and shocks are not designed for those heavy wheels/tires. So, you won't get the ride control you should because the stock shocks can't dampen those heavy wheels hopping up and down.
So you really need to put some extra big aftermarket breaks and shocks and springs to handle the 19.5 or 22.5 inch tires. If you want a truck to haul that much load, then by a Top Kick 4 door that is set up to handle that sort of thing. I would imagine if you looked at the axle, springs, shocks, and brakes on a top kick with 19.5's, you will find they are much, much heavier than a 2500 HD.
You are asking for more issues than you are solving. Plus, in a panic situation, you don't know what that truck will do.
Just a few things to consider.
