I jsut finished installing a HomeLink module in my original 03 short overhead console & it works great. It only cost me $32.50 counting shipping on ebay. Thanks to a couple guys here I was able to get it wired up and working in no time.

Here's what I started with, $20.50 plus $12.00 shipping ebay purchase.

This is the HomeLink module from the ebay item.

After removing the module I cut the door to use it as a template to mark the oval hole for the switch & the small hole for the red programing light. I clamped the template to my original short overhead console, marked it with a pencil then cut it out & sanded the edge with a dremel tool.

Before I could mount the module I had to cut off 2 ears that prevented it from sitting flat against the storage box of the console. I cut them off at the 2 red lines in the next photo.

http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/uploads/Cut_ears_off_module.jpg

The red arrow on the next photo points to the mount on the switch that wedges against the storage box to hold the switch in the newly cut hole. I also wedged two tightly wrapped spools of masking tape with the sticky side out to help secure the switch in place (green arrows).

Looks pretty good. I was able to pick up an oem console out of a suburban off of ebay for $50. I had to watch ebay every day for about 3 months before I found one. I might have gone your route had I have not found something soon. I was going to put it in the OEM location though. Nice work. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif

I put a HomeLink in my 03 similar to what DMAX2DAMAX put in. Only I got one out of a sun Visor on a Maximum that a guy had on ebay. I got it for $35.00 The Overhead Consoles are going for around $150.00 on ebay now.

http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/uploads/258_hl-7.jpg

First thing I had to do was get the Homelink unit out of the Visor. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/uploads/4ZA_hl-1.jpg

http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/uploads/878_hl-3.jpg

I made a template out of paper and scribed it on my original OH Console. Then cut it out with my Dremel.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/uploads/AB2_hl-4.jpg

I put the homelink on the console, Had to make sure the antenna was there also.

It looks good and hard to find if you don't know what you are looking for.

Thanks Eric as easy as it was, I am thinking about getting more visors and Consoles, and maybe selling them on Ebay. I have a set of lighted mirrors if someone needs them.

Okay, what is that little smiley face lookin' thing on the side of the console? I haven't really tried to figure it out, but I was lookin' at it today when SWMBO was in the store. I thought it was a microphone, but there is another microphone just above my head in the driver's seat. . . What gives?Edited by: baimpala

I think the Microphone thing you looking at in the headliner is something to do with the automatic temp control!!!

I think i've one upped you guys with my homelink upgrade. I just stole it out of my 98 Tahoe before selling it and put it in my 01 Dmax. Plugged right in and it was a straight swap from console to console. Hehe.

You may have, but the overhead console in the 98 Tahoe is the long one, and the 2003 pickups have the short console. I had one with the Homelink in it, but didn't want to cut up my headliner.

BIGMoe,

Nice job!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif

baimpala,

the smiley face is the Onstar mic

Okay thanks, I guess the little thing just above my head that looks like a microphone is for the onstar phone, then? I always thought that they used the same microphone for both. You learn something new everyday. By the time I hit 200 years old, I'll be pretty smart.

BTW, your install looks very nice. I started looking on e-bay. . . hopefully I'll find something nice.

the little grill above your head near the door is a thermostat for auto climate control.... they do use the same microphone for anything onstar.....

Now that is funny. I've been yelling into my thermostat all this time? For some reason my onstar has a hard time with my two and my eights, so I get pretty hot under the collar at it. Sometimes I even break out my doctorate in colorful language when I have to clear about ten times in a row. Now I just have to laugh at all those times I cursed the thermostat out.

Thanks, you made my day,
Dennis

I just did the custom install of homelink. It also came from ebay for about $30. including shipping. I just hooked the two wires, to the hot and ground in the overhead console. I noticed that others ran wires under the dash for another power source. Why is that? Is it just so that the homelink would only work when the key was on, or is there another reason? Every other garage door opener I have ever seen was not key controlled.

I was just looking at ebay for the homelink again, and I saw the exact same homelink I used. It was just the right color and easy install.

Does your home link work without operating the map lights? I tried it that way on mine and the power saver turned the juice off to the home link until I toggled the map light, then the juice came back to the home link. That's why I ran a wire to the fuse block. The fact that the home link only works with the key on is an very nice added bonus IMHO.

Having had a day of testing, you are right. I had to turn on the light to make the homelink work. I will get it wired right tonight.

Thanks,

Bluejay, I finally got a hold of a wiring schematic for the 2003 - 2004 overhead console. It looks to me that if you disconnect the white wire and run it directly to a body ground it will work without having to turn on a map light. The CM shuts off the ground to the console after 20 minutes and turns it back on when the light is used. I didn't have a chance to pull mine and rewire it tonight had a family thing tonight. I will give it a try tomorrow. By the way the console I have in the pictures above is for sale. I got one out of a 2002 Tahoe with the Homelink already in it for a great price, and put in in today. I had to rewire it for the 2003 schematic. Anyone interested can PM me!!! Edited by: BIGMoe

Big Moe,

Too late! I already ran the wires down the pillar. I knew there was some tricky stuff in the way the consol lights were wired. Everything working well now. Let us know how your wiring works out.

Thanks,

Jay

Jay, The ground didn't help!!! I guess to put a HomeLink in a 2003 that wasn't wired for it a person will have to run a power and 12 volt wire to the homelink. I will post the wiring schmatic here for everyone to see it.

http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/uploads/2003_OH.jpg

The VCM must cut the 12 volt supply also. When I made a seperat ground for the Homelink, I still had to turn on one of the map lights to get the HomeLink to work after 20 minutes.

Working with these HomeLink Units I have learned some of them have an antenna and some do not. On the first one I put on my truck, when I took the unit out of the sun visor it had an antenna. Well when I put it in the overhead console I installed the antenna. I had better range than I do with my wifes Tahoe. The 2002 overhead console had an aluminum foil antenna. The one in our Tahoe does not. The ones with an antenna do have a longer range. Look at the arrow in this picture.

http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/uploads/4D1_Antenna.jpg

I am going to see if I can put an antenna in our Tahoeand see if I can get better range.
