: A/C weak (TSB 02-01-38-007c)
Well, it was a hot day in SoCal and I noticed my A/C being very weak. So, I search here to see if it was a common problem, and it appears to be. Some questions I have are:
1. My truck has 51k miles. Has anyone gotten a dealer to perform the TSB
free of charge?
2. Assuming I can't get the work done under "warranty", can anyone describe
the difficulty of performing the TSB by themself? I'm mechanically inclined
3. Anyone know the price of the TSB parts (accumulator, hose, bracket) and
the price of recharging the system?
Thanks,
Rey
Bodysurfer 06-04-2006, 04:00 AM Have you hit up the dealer about that TSB?
No, I haven't. I'd like to find out if others have had success getting the TSB work done even though they were out of warranty.
4whlfury 06-04-2006, 04:19 PM I also noticed my a/c being weak. I have about the same amount of miles 47k. This is the first i have used the a/c since i bought it used in march. Post back if that TSB fixes the problem.
I wish it was as simple as a TSB, but since the truck is out of warranty I'm going to probably have to pay for the diagnosis. The dealership I went to before was kind enough to waive this fee because no problem was found. They probably did this because it was my first time there. If you're not mechanically inclined, then I would suggest bringing the truck in for diagnosis. For me, I'm trying to understand the problem and see what's the best econimical way to get the AC working the way it's suppose to. From my research on this website, I've found that some people just recharged or replaced the low pressure switch and all was fine. In order to get that done, IMO, it has to be diagnosed. So, the TSB is only a part of the equation.
TOTHEMAX! 06-04-2006, 05:59 PM i went to the dealer with the tsb in hand. and walked out with a 230$ bill in hand...
ziadmax 06-04-2006, 06:33 PM Hmmm, my parents recently "melted" a hole in the fuel tank on their Suburban.
I looked up the TSB on it and they went to the stealership and it got fixed for free.
The 'Burb has about 95k on the clock.
I know what you mean, though. I need to take my beast in and see what they can do for it.

I was PMing Cobra(tech here) about my problem. He mentioned that there is an option to get some "GM assistance" for vehicles out of warranty. For around $200, I'm thinking that that might not be too bad.
So, I just bought one of those R134a recharge bottles which comes with a gauge. My plan is to verify the pressure in the system. However, from what I've read I don't see a low side port on/near the accumulator. I see other ports, buts they appear to me to be on the high side. Can anyone provide insight to this? We have an accumulator and it comes after the evaporator, so it should be on the low side, so where is the port??. If it was a receiver/dryer, then it would be on the high side...???
I've located the accumulator and hose(TSB replacement parts) and I think I can get them for around $150, which isn't bad. Looking at the accumulator in the truck....no big deal to replace. I wonder how much it costs to evacuate/recharge a system. Anyone know?
TOTHEMAX! 06-04-2006, 07:22 PM so im still confused over the whole tsb deal. some people ge it fixed for free, most get stuck with the bill... whats the difference?

So far, it seems those that get it fixed for free are under warranty. Those that have to pay are out of warranty. My initial post was hoping to find some kind of precedence of the working being done for free, but no one has mention such so far.
TOTHEMAX! 06-04-2006, 07:30 PM i thought it was going to be covered. but i guess not. next time ill do more research before i take it in.. lesson learned

Yeah, I've never heard about this either, but it seems to be an option for owners who think they are getting the short end of the deal because of being out(i.e not *way* out) of warranty. I don't know the details of this but I guess you would discuss this with the service manager.
One of the postings I read here was about having too much pressure in his AC system. Well, I went and bought one of those R134a charger kits that has a separate gauge and I just connected the gauge and it read that the system was way over charged. I reduced the pressure drove the truck a couple miles on the freeway and then the last couple miles on the street roads. At home I let it idle and measured the temp at the center vent....44 degrees. It felt colder than before, however, it is only 72 degrees outside. I'll see how it does when it gets above 100. I'm hoping for similar readings. So much for taking the truck in tomorrow for diagnosis. :)
mechtech 06-05-2006, 02:45 AM There Are Numerous TSB's Dating Way Back On AC Poor Performance, I Would'nt Be To Quick To Pick Any One TSB To Solve All Problems, Also The Dealer That Performs These Services For Customers Not In Warranty Are Usually The Ones Who Want To Sell You Your Next Truck/Vehicle So Get The Salesman And Service Manager Involved, The Noisey Wheel Gets The Grease.
