You guys are probably thinking... "oh no not another tuner thread" but I've read so many different statements about almost every tuner out there and I'm still a bit confused!

First off, I am not the power-hungry type like many of you are (that's what my other cars are for). I'm going to be making payments for the next 3 years on my baby and I don't need to take more loans anytime soon for a suncoast.

My truck's primary function is to haul an enclosed car trailer. It doesn't do it often, maybe 5-6 times out of the year. During those trips, I'd like to maximize fuel efficiency and longitivity of the 5-speed allison (I have a 2001 2500HD crew cab).

My question for you experts -- What would my best bet be to increase fuel economy while keeping the power levels down so I don't limp the allison? I am very tempted to go to my local bully dog dealer and demo the pup but I know that performance setting will be hard to resist. But if I left it on the tow/econ setting, will there be any long-term problems with the allison? Even when pulling? Should the mpg increase justify the cost of the unit? (I've read some people have seen 1-2mpg increase, others saw a decrease. I personally get 16mpg on average w/out towing so I know there is room for improvement).

I've had much experience with tuning (having tuned standalones for the 'race cars'), but it seems like most of the electronics out there have pre-tuned chips that just affect your factory maps. Is there a product out there that will allow me to make my own adjustments to fuel, timing, boost, etc, on the fly?

Last question (kinda off topic from the thread), but should I try to get my injectors replaced through the dealer? The truck doesn't have any symptoms other than low mpg and a 'bucking' or 'rough idle' occasionally. The injectors have 67,000 miles on them and are original. Truck had a 2-micron fuel filter put on at 40K.

Thanks in advance for the help guys.. Hopefully someone else can learn something new in this thread besides myself.

Yea a tuner may help your mpg's if you drive it nicely. Stick with a small tune for towing, less than 60hp, and you should be safe with the ally. Before you go tuning it get gauges!
As for your injectors take it to your dealer and tell them about the rough idle and poor mpg, sounds like injectors to me.

If you want to be set up for the future I suggest you invest in EFI-Live.

It will cost you as much as a downloader will, if you buy from SocalDiesel...click the link in my SIG for EFI-Live, Trippin will set you up with a starter tow/economy tune.

You will then be able to flash your ECM and TCM with the Commercial Package and be in control of your trucks tuning.

There are plenty of off the shelf tuners for sale, the choice is yours.

Most are selling the tuners in favor of EFI-Live.

Thanks Tony. I've heard good things about the EFI-Live and will definetely look into it. That is *exactly* what I am looking for!

DURYMCGEE: Thanks for the advice. I'll take it to the dealer and pray they don't mess the truck up.
