I am getting ready to change my external spin on filter. I was looking yesterday to see where to add ATF if needed and cannot find anything. I see the tube for the dipstick seems oversized. Is this where it is added?

Yes sir, that is correct. You'll probably lose between 8 and 16 ounces.

I have searched this site looking for this info. Now that I have found it I have a question...I am VERY cautious with my truck so, since I believe 8 to 16 oz. would be hard to see on the stick, should I just add 8 oz. each time I change the filter and let it go at that or do something else. Please bear with my questions. This is my first Dmax/Ally. Thanks

Why dont you save the hassle and take 5 minutes and fill the filter with ATF before you put it on? Very simple to do, just make sure all the bubbles are out and you'll know its full.

There are no bubbles in atf. They are loaded with anti-foam agents because bubbles -foam are filled with air and that kills gear trains. That is one of the big reasons not to overfill your trans. Overfilling causes foaming because when the level is to high the gears rotate submerged and create foam (air) and that does not lubricate very well.

I believe he was refering to air bubbles from air pockets in the filter when filling it with atf. That sounds like a good idea. I will try that unless someone lets me know that it is a bad idea. As I said earlier, I am not much of a mechanic and have not owned a diesel in 15 years.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Actually could be some air pockets, BUT when I did this and filled the filter "several" times because the filter would soak up the ATF. (It's amazing how much it would soak up, filling it up at least 3 or 4 times!) Never had to add anymore through the dipstick.
