I understand that the thermocouple for the pyrometer should be inserted pre-turbo to get the full benefit. I understand that you are supposed to drill and tap a hole for the thermocouple in the exhaust manifold. My question is…..what happens to the metal shavings that get into the inside of the manifold? Won’t these hurt the turbo?

If so, how do you keep the shavings from getting in there? Do you have to remove the manifold before drilling?

Thanks for some advice.

Should be more instruction in FAQ's. Manifold can be removed, or put grease on bit and tap, or drill and tap with engine running, let exhaust blow chips out. I would do it the hard way and remove manifold to be sure, do as you will.

Have been told that running the engine while drilling will blow out the shavings.

Good luck,
John

Engine idling, and going slow - no problems at all. Be sure to wear safety glasses!!!

I put the shop vac on it while drilling slowly, then grease on the tap. Worked good.

Do a search for the "Hoot Method". Works like a charm.

Did mine this evening using the Hoot method. No problems. The chips will fly, wear safety glasses.
