: TH400 to 700R4 swap
mangus580 05-31-2006, 02:49 PM Does anyone have a spare TV cable bracket for the 6.2 Injection pump and the 700R4 tranny? I may also need the TCC wiring. I am working on putting things together to swap out the TH400 for the TH700R4 in my 1009. Any tips that anyone might have would be helpful as well. Will I need a different driveshaft? Different Cross Member?
I know I should add an external cooler, and possibly even a tranny temp guage....
I am still trying to decide if I want to swap the tranny or the gears first. I know that 3.08's can be hard on the 700R4 tranny with the diesel...
DuramaxWannabe 05-31-2006, 10:17 PM I don't have a spare bracket and cable, but I can tell you that you will not need any special wiring for the TCC. Don't get roped into that $125 trap! Just run a hot 12 volts to pin #1 on the trans plug, and then run the ground up to your brake pedal switch and then to a toggle switch. With ignition power on, the TCC will lock up automatically in 3rd and 4th and will unlock when you apply the brakes. The toggle is there for when you want to overide the TCC function. You will not need to change the crossmember or driveshaft, but you will need to make sure to change the output shaft on the trans to be the same as your current TH400 ( 27 spline if I'm not mistaken ) then you can bolt the NP208 right back up. I would try the 3.08's, as the 1st gear in the 700R4 is lower than the TH400. Go with the trans swap 1st, you won't regret it. P.S., get the largest cooler you can fit. It WILL run hotter than the '400.
mangus580 05-31-2006, 10:23 PM What is the vacuum switch used for then?
Also, Pin #1 is 12+, what Pin is Ground? The toggle is the override, so it puts 12+ to the TCC? or does it shut it off?

I am truely impressed. No kidding. i would like to see a diagram of this. i am trying to draw it out as I am reading this. i have wanted to do the same thing on my 93 2500 with the 4l60 trans. I wanted the converter to me able to be contrrolled by a switch, its a moot point now since it is for sale, But this is just awesome info
DuramaxWannabe 06-01-2006, 01:06 AM I believe pin #3 is the ground but I will have to crawl under mine again to be sure. I don't use the ground myself; I actually have the selenoid grounded at one of the mounting bolts on the selenoid itself. The instuctions I gave will work just as well if you run the hot to a toggle, then to the brake switch and then to pin #1 of the trans connector.
P.S. Magnus, I leave the power on all the time, the toggle is to override(shut off) lockup in 3rd and 4th (Max acceleration)
P.P.S. The vacuum swith is supposed to interrupt the power when you stomp the gas hard, again, for max acceleration.
mangus580 06-01-2006, 07:48 AM Got all that.... So basically pin #1 is 12+ pin #3 (maybe) is ground. Switch whichever is easier...
Now what I have heard, is some people also wire a toggle, that is a manual override on I think.
as far as stomping on the gas hard, I have the fortunate luck of having the kickdown switch from the TH400, that I could use for that :-)
High Sierra 2500 06-01-2006, 10:44 AM I'm not sure about this, but I think the bracket is the same thing as GM put on their 350 gas engines. You might look for one at a junkyard...
If that doesn't work, you might be able to fabricate a TV cable bracket. It is just a piece of flat steel bent on one end with a few holes drilled in it and a square hole for the TV cable. If you end up going that route, let me know and I can probably get the dimensions of the part (and photos of it, if necessary).
My truck doesn't have a vacuum switch. I think all it has is an electric switch, if there is anything at all... So I think the kickdown switch from TH400 would be perfect.
mangus580 06-01-2006, 10:49 AM I have been told I can get the braket from GM still.. A picture or 2 of the bracket would help me to identify what I need... I have no clue where they bolt, or how they attach to the IP...
DuramaxWannabe 06-01-2006, 01:27 PM Just ground the selenoid at the mount and work with the #1 pin, the 12v+. It is the easiest method.
mangus580 06-01-2006, 01:29 PM Doesnt that rely heavily on making sure the tranny has a good ground? In some of my reading, I see the older style 700R4's were prone to failure if the TCC plug was unhooked... I would worry about causing damage :-)
Also, any idea where I can find a plug for the TCC connection? I dont think the one I have kicking around is any good.

They get the part you look for

DuramaxWannabe 06-01-2006, 09:06 PM If the ground is good enough for the starter it will be good enough for the little TCC selenoid. Check with ant tranny or tranny supply shop for the plug.
High Sierra 2500 06-02-2006, 08:22 AM If you get your tranny from a junkyard like I did, there will probably be a plug with it. They just cut everything that hooks up to the trans and pull it out (in my odd case, that meant that they even cut the drveshaft off ), so there will be a plug with part of the wiring harness left hanging off the transmission.
I didn't get the pictures yet. Been kind of busy... The part that tigman posted a picture of is the rear TV cable bracket. I believe you also wanted pictures of the hook up at the IP, so I'll get some of that as well.
There is a small wire rod that runs from the IP connection to the actual TV cable - You'll need to get that, too.
mangus580 06-02-2006, 08:24 AM I will need pics of what mounts the cable and how the whole thing hooks up.
Got the wiring figured out....
High Sierra 2500 06-02-2006, 08:34 AM All right, I'll get pictures of everything. Should have them posted some time today.
mangus580 06-02-2006, 08:36 AM Thanks again

One must be careful when playing with the TCC wiring , if vehicle is not controled by computer its a piece of cake, switch the 12v wire to tranny.
If it is controled by computer it is a tad different as the computer controled units use a selonoid that is ungrounded in the case, it is grounded by the computer.
That said one can install a switch in the ground wire between tranny and cab and then you control lockup.
EDIT= upon reading what i said i realize i goofed as one can switch either 12v wire or ground wire for the same effect. DUH

High Sierra 2500 06-02-2006, 10:33 PM I am having computer problems. Can't get the camera to download... Stupid thing keeps freezing up on me. I'll try again in the morning. Sorry for the wait...
mangus580 06-02-2006, 10:34 PM No biggie, tranny aint here yet ;-)
High Sierra 2500 06-03-2006, 09:51 PM Still can't get it working... I've got them as bitmaps, I'm going to have to convert them to jpegs. It is too late right now to do it though, I am dog tired and don't know that I could even figure out how to do something that simple right now. I'll get it tomorrow almost for sure.
mangus580 06-03-2006, 11:05 PM Worst case, you could always email them to me...
High Sierra 2500 06-04-2006, 08:29 AM I got them. They aren't the best, but I think you can get a pretty good idea of what it looks like.
GMC-YA 06-04-2006, 08:43 PM HAY MAG, PM or Email me, I might have the bracket you need but uou would still need the connecting rod. Anyway get in touch with me and you can take a look at my truck and see what you need
mangus580 06-04-2006, 09:33 PM Thanks, I sent you a PM last night on it, I thought....
peegh 06-05-2006, 05:47 AM we just took the motor and trans out of an 80's van and I have a 86 suburban with a broke crank I probably have the cable and bracket and plugs that you will need
mangus580 06-05-2006, 08:02 AM peegh, that would be GREAT!!!
Take a look and let me know. I need mostly the TV cable bracket, and the stuff to make it hook to the injection pump.
peegh 06-05-2006, 10:37 AM Do you need the plug for the transmission as well
mangus580 06-05-2006, 10:53 AM Nope, got that set...
peegh 06-06-2006, 09:03 AM I have what you need
