I have a 2000 Superduty with a powerstroke, when the temp is cooler, (under 55 degrees) it is hard starting, it will sputter the first time and then nothing, if I give it a small shot of starting fluid ( which I hate to do) it will fire up, any ideas? Once it's been started it will start fine all day even if it sits for hours. Also I'm looking for a good running 6.9 or 7.3 for another truck. thanks

Check your glow plugs or your manifold air heater

I just fixed one. It was the glow plug controller.

I hear it click, and the "wait to start" light still comes on, could it still be the controller?

My customers 2k PSD had no light for glow plugs. It only acted up after it sat a while. Then we would have to jump it from the bat to controller to start it. Don't know if this is your problem but these controllers go out quite often.

As far as not starting unless plugged in. You need to check your glow plug relay located under the cover on top of engine. Look at the 2 larger studs and condition of cables. If showing any signs of rust/corrosion or melting of the relay itself it needs to be replaced. (Most of the time just a slight pull on one of these will snap it off in your hand). If all looks ok you will need a volt meter or test light. One cable will have constant voltage to it the other won't until you turn on the key. If while the wait to start light is on you do not have power to both sides of the relay check to see if you have power to one of the smaller wires. They pull in the relay. If you have power to one smaller wire but not to both heavy cables the relay is shot. This is a common occurance. If all is ok here you need an ohm meter. before I can tell you how to check the glowplugs I nee to know if you have 1 or 2 connecters on the valve cover. Now on to the stalling, after the inital stall and then restart does it run ok or does it continue to stall? If it still stalls the cam sensor is a safe place to start. You may want to check the price at your local International dealer. Just bring them the old one and they can check the numbers. (There 2 for this motor and it's important to replace with the right one). On most parts for this engine you may find that the price difference is worth the trip compared to Ford.

Let me know about the valve cover plugs and we can go from there.

I have this problem in Arizona. My truck will just constanly turn over and smoke but not start. I figured out the do to the chip i have and that PSD dont like cold temps.... I just plug in my block heater for about 30mins and then it fires right uphttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

But then again here it's only cold for like 3 months out of the year...

Samething happened to my buddies truck, and he just has a Superchips programmer.....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

I agree with Mr. Gosselin though....do it the right way and check the relay.

How many miles are on the truck???( I didnt see that posted, and if you did post it then I'm just dumb)
