: paint recall possible?
terel 04-30-2004, 11:37 AM Like many of you, I'm finding unusually abundant paint chips on my truck (some in unlikely places--like between the front of the bed and the back of the cab). After reading so many other peoples' experiences, I wonder if GM would ever pony up and do something about it.
I think I know the answer, but what are our chances? Has anyone talked to their dealer about it?
~terel
Hound 04-30-2004, 12:05 PM In the '92 timeframe, GM used a different primer mfg compared to the paint mfg. The paint would just come off in sheets leaving just the primer. GM didn't want to do anything about it but a good dealer said no problem, we'll repaint it. At least that's been my experience with GM and paint issues.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif
hdmax 04-30-2004, 01:05 PM I do a lot of reading, and this post is the first I have heard of any paint problems. Where have I been?
I am getting close to 60,000 miles on my truck, and it has a total of 3 very small chips. And they are on the nose of the hood of all placeshttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif
Sorry to hear about your paint problems!
Camstyn 04-30-2004, 01:06 PM My buddy's white 2500HD CC is chipping like crazy. I've got the same mileage on my truck as he does and I don't have any rock chips on my paint at all (pewter).
GassedRacing 04-30-2004, 01:42 PM My white simply sux. I am already planning on a full paint job. My dealer (and all the other lame-o dealers in my area) are telling me I drive too much offroad that is why I am throwing rocks all over my truck. Oh, they also pulled, "well, those large tires are throwing more rocks..." b.s. I just turned around and walked away. I think I am either gonna get the rocker panels covered in Line-X or something, or I am gonna just have it all re-painted when I decide enough is enough. I know it sounds extreme, but that is all one can do. Since most of my chips are down low, I might just do a simple spot repair (white is so easy to match up), and it is, after all a truck and not a show queen.
StraitDiesel 04-30-2004, 01:49 PM I have the same problem with my white truck... I've noticed an awful lot of small chips and I never, ever off road. I had a 90' Z71 in high school that was black with 247,000 miles on it and it looked better (paint wise) than my white truckhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

Bronco 04-30-2004, 02:34 PM ME TOO! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif
Happened as soon as I drove off the lot! With the stock tires! Rocker panels, behind tires ect. ect. The bottom of my truck is almost grey!
Summit White!
Los Lobos 04-30-2004, 03:01 PM I am opting for line x, I have the same grey area starting to appear. Totaly trashed the bottem of my truck.
Camstyn you switched avatars , looks like you're smoking something.

Sounds like it's mostly white trucks this is happening to. I doubt it's a coincidence.
My buddy's is chipping the worst on the hood and at the front of the box, the front edge where there is a gap between the box and the cab.
He doesn't off-road his either, just winter highway driving. It looks like tiny flakes of paint have come off as you can see either grey primer underneith, or bare metal.Edited by: Camstyn
Bronco 04-30-2004, 03:15 PM Are you tellin me that only white trucks with lets say 5000 miles and on up, have numerous 1/8 to 1/4 " chips with grey showing through on the bottom side and hood nose? I figured it was all trucks.
If it is only white, somebody other than me is payin.
jjs3788 04-30-2004, 03:23 PM A friend of mine of an auto accessory shop. He told me about this clear film the goes on the front of the vehicle, like tint. Its real thick and is supposed to resist a 1/2" rock at 60mph. He had it on his vehicle and he loves the stuff. My truck is due in next week or the week after and I am going straight to his shop to have it done. He said he can also custom cut pieces to put in just behind the wheels. The film on the hood is supposed to extend about 18" up the hood. He said from a few feet away you cant tell its on there.

I think the paint color has a lot to do with it. I've got 315's on and no rock chips, he's got 265's on and lots of rock chips. I should have more than him if we had the same paint.
Max Power 04-30-2004, 04:51 PM I'm not sure if it is true or not but someone once told me that the metallic flakes were in the paint the stronger the paint is. Obviously white has no metallic. Take it for what it's worth. Might be total BS.
BadDog 04-30-2004, 09:14 PM Other than some tiny chips behind the tires on the lower rocker, I have no problems with my White truck... yet...
They make a clear rock/chip guard that sprays on from an aerosol can. That might be the ticket here. Most any body shop supply should have it.
SonnyBear 04-30-2004, 10:40 PM Count me in as starting to get some chips. 5000 miles and rockers behind the tires show some. The tread on the Revos's throws rocks very well. Plus I have a gravel driveway. Not good.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

4x4man 04-30-2004, 11:02 PM Well, my black truck is chipping pretty good behind the rear wheels..it appears the mud flaps are not helping much. Now that I have some new rims and tires on the truck, I am sure I will have a bunch more.... http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Disapprove.gif
But the truck looks much better with the new shoes!!! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif
Bronco 04-30-2004, 11:52 PM 4x4 Man,
Glad to here you got some new treads. I am sure it looks much better than 2 weeks ago when I saw it. Do any of your web pics have the new tires? I Couldn't find any?
BTW thaks for letting me try out the juice.
NoWake200 05-01-2004, 12:17 AM ME THREE!!!! Only have 5,000m and they are all over the place even up on the doors....she has never been off road yet. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif
And it is also white....about the color....this is my third white truck. Never noticed it one any of the others.
Max Owner 05-01-2004, 12:20 AM Hey, guys. My truck is Pewter. I have what look like small stone chips, on my truck, in some weird places. Two, are on the hood, within an inch, of each other. Also, one on the box, behind the wheel well. And a few on the outside (back) of the tailgate. I figured those were from towing the fifth wheel. Rock bounced back off trailer, and hit tailgate. These chips don't appear to have a dent with them. Just a small chunck of paint missing. I have Michelin LTX M/S tires. Horible, for throwing stones. I just put a set of Cloud Rider mud flaps on (actually labeled as stone protectors) Thought they might help.
If this turn s out to be a paint problem.....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
BlueOx03 05-01-2004, 07:23 AM Mine's blue and chipping like crazy as well. I still have stock tires and my quarters are all chipped. I use touch up paint on the hood everytime I wash it just to keep up. Crappy paint!

GassedRacing 05-01-2004, 10:48 AM Alright, we should have enough people to submit some kind of complaint. Can Eric or someone give me some advice on who to call to submit a formal request to have it looked at? I'll be happy to take the lead on getting GM to rectify the situation, I just need to know who's head to go beat in http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif.
NoWake200 05-01-2004, 10:51 AM I wounder if this has anything to do with our E.P.A.?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif
Max Owner 05-01-2004, 01:17 PM Hey, all. Paint chips, behind the tires, will be typical. The dealer, or who ever, will say "Put flaps on" If the paint chips are appearing in unlikely places (stones bounce quite well on asphalt), then a mass compalint might get something done.

That is when you tell the lame dealer that if the truck needs flaps, then they should be on there from the factory. Plain and simple!
Duallyvette 05-01-2004, 11:35 PM White dually, first week , chips on the hood. I put a white hood deflecter on it.
Black dually, no chips, but the husky mudflaps cracked both fenders when I backed it up in some deep snow....and i'm still pissed.
But I love my D/A's
nassdmax 05-02-2004, 09:51 AM I put the GM moulded flaps on from the getgo and I still had chips showing up all the time.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif I could hear the stones pinging the rockers and such.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif My alternative was to put giant MF mudflaps on. Solved my problem, but then again it looks kind of crappy. Sure protects the truck though.... http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif I have clean rockers for the most part durring the winter, and the trailer does not get slung.
This spring the touch up paint comes out to fix the rockers back to original...

Sorry for the late reply. First you are welcome for borrowing the juice, it was good to meet you and shoot the $hit.

Bronco 05-02-2004, 04:38 PM Looks good! Were you able to keep the pizza cutters?
4x4man 05-02-2004, 05:25 PM Thanks!! I decided to talk with my dealer first to get their words and policy's concerning tires (as well as what GM says), and they told me they didn't care if I put on 265's or 285's. So I gave the pizza cutters back to Discount Tire and they gave me nearly the full purchase price back to be used towards the new tires (only had 7k on them)!! I decided to go with the 265's as there was far too much trimming that was going to be necessary with these rims to get the 285's to fit. Very happy with the look of the truck now!!
LBZrcks 05-02-2004, 07:07 PM of all the colors I've seen, GM's black paint always seems to have so much orange peel in it. Or atleast is show's it the most.
EngineerBill 05-02-2004, 08:28 PM Well mine is fire red and it has been chipping in many places since new, and I figured it was probably the paint lack of strength or bonding, do to EPA requirements? Probably water based too!
Engineer Bill
My truck's rockers and hood have chips everywhere, and the truck is only 3 months old. I put mud flaps on it the day I brought it home from the dealer. My 98 crew cab dually I just got rid of with 100,000 miles on it had less stone chips.
Oh ya, the color is dark grey metallic.
Chilly 05-03-2004, 08:19 AM I might as well get in on this too. 03 with dark green paint, I have more chips in this truck then my last one that I had for years. I also have GM molded flaps on it, they don't seem to help though. It also seems the paint scratches pretty easy too. Not impressed.
Chris
the paint on these trucks is not a good quality. some brown-noser saved the company millions on a great paint deal. its thiner than water. just one of many corners cut , in the name of the ...bottom line.
the sheet metal isn't much thicker than the paint

I've seen this before. I was gonna have it installed on they car I almost bought. I think 3M makes it. It was called a clear bra. it's pretty good stuff from what I understand. I'm kinda interested in it my self. my 325/65/18 are throwin rock like no other.

Have any of you guys tried color keyed Line-X for your rockers? I was thinking of doing it when I get my bed sprayed, but i'm not sure if I should do it. Is it durable enough to hold up to a direct hit from a rock? I do like the idea of the clear 3m bra for the hood. Let us know how it looks, and turns out jjs3788.
Max Owner 05-04-2004, 10:56 AM Hey, all. I had the stuff from 3M, on a 94, black Dakota. Between the cab, and the box. It was on there, for just over three years, before I sold the truck. It seemed to work well.
If the paint is thinner, on the newer trucks, who knows how things will turn out. The stuff comes on various sized rolls. You then custom cut it, to cover the desired area. The purchasing dealer did it for me. Don't remember if money changed hands.
LBZrcks 05-04-2004, 07:30 PM 4Wheel parts sells the clear bra stuff if there is one near you guys.
Max Owner 05-05-2004, 11:42 PM Hey, you guys. There might be something to this paint thing. My dad and I were out talking about the paint chips, on my truck. He thought they were stone chips, until he found a blemish on my hood.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
It looks like a paint bubble, starting, or; rust starting to form under the paint. I will try and get the camera out, with a macro lense on it, and post picture. I may need help getting the pic posted, though.
motovet 05-06-2004, 12:21 AM My 02' with charcoal grey has chipped badly since new. I have used tons of touch up and Lanka to keep it looking good. The paint is VERY thin.
