Changed mine out at 10K and the lube was milky color which in an outboard outdrive would indicate presence of water. However, from what I've read on this forum most if not all the guys who post diff lube changes reports the lube being a milky color. There are better wizards on this forum that me but I just don't see how water could get in the diff.

Front diff oil is usually milky indicating the presence of water usually because the front diff isn't usually used.

Put your hand on the rear diff after 10 minutes of driving and it will feel warm or even hot. This heat burns off any condensation in the diff fluid. The same doesn't apply to front diffs since they are not commonly engaged, and don't generate enough heat to burn off condensation and any water that has worked its way in.

That is my understanding.

this was not a milky color it looked like oil right out of the ground. more like dark yellow brown mud

I'm guessing the oil is gone? If not let it sit in a clear container and see if any water separates out.
