this past week i had water in my fuel. now i got to thinking. water sinks because it is heavier then the fuel. that means you would suck up the water fuel mix first. that is what chemisty taught me. now why do people say when you get low in the tank you suck up more water then fuel.

Is it possible to put something like tygon tubing (at Home Depot) down the filler neck to the bottom of the tank and siphon most of it out? If you're not going to drop the tank I'd change the filter and keep checking the water trap by draining some out in a clear glass. I don't know why most say that regarding the low tank but I would think it sloshes around more when close to empty and there'd be a greater chance of sucking more water into the line. The 6 oz you found is a lot of water. I'd think about getting a locking cap and buying fuel elsewhere.

I don't believe there is any reason why running the tank low presents any risk. I nearly always run my truck until there is only a gallon or two left, and I haven't had any trouble. I always cut my fuel filters open after I change them, and they look fine.

I likewise don't stop to fuel up until just before or after the warning light comes on and have never found any rust or water in the filter can. I just changed mine yesterday after 9550 miles on it. It looked fine after cutting open as always. I do buy most at large truckstops with a fast turnover.

I do not think you guys get what i was asking. I am trying to understand if the pump sucks from the bottom and the water sits at the bottom how would water build up. How low to the bottom of the tank is the pick up for the pump

I haven't seen the inside of one of these tanks. The many I have were aircraft and a few Nissan car fuel tanks. None took the fuel from the very bottom but had the fuel pick-up opening about 0.5 to 0.75 inches from the bottom. I would imagine our tanks would be similar. 0.5 inches across the bottom area of the tank could be a substantial amount of water. I'm assuming you changed the fuel filter and keep draining the water trap?

That's a LOT of water. I'd keeping checking the water trap OFTEN. And I'd get a locking tank cap. You also might want to consider some Stanadyne in it as it will help keep the water separated from the fuel (demulsifying). Good luck with it. Did you have any home made bio in it just before this occured?

no it is fresh bio made from soybean. and it is certified. at this point the truck will not start. i will get a new filter and hope it will start after that.
