my dad has a 95 6.5 n/a 1 ton van with a manual pump. his pump has been going down hill for several months, he rescently went a injection shop were they told him it that those pumps had a recall on them many years ago. they said chevy was having problems with hard starts so they had to do an upgrade on them. they told him it would cost him another few hundreds on top of the rebuild if this had not been done to the pump. his van has never had problems, in fact starts better than my blazer. is there such an upgrade that needs to be done? or is this guy pullin his chain? what if he gets it rebuilt with out this upgrade will it start okay? i know theres someone on here who can help me out. pleeease!

It's not actually a recall, but a special policy that covers pump/pmd replacement for 11 years or 120,000 miles from the original in-service date. Call a dealer with the VIN and they can tell you if it's still within time. If you're over miles though, you're SOL. The pumps were improved a few times, the major upgrade was ceramic plunger rollers replacing steel. Generally, a recall is only a safety issue (though it can be argued that stalling in traffic is dangerous).

No, I do believe that there may have been a recall for the 94-95 years with steel rollers inside. Don't know if was only for the DS4 pumps, or if it included DB2's too. I take it, with an N/A, "manual" means mechanical DB2 pump...
Need a pump guy to verify this though...

so do you think if it hasnt been done and its still doing fine that it needs to be replaced or just leave it alone?

I don't know about if there is a cut-off on the recall or something, or what it said if I have my facts remotely straight... but if someone is gonna give you a pump, then hey... what's there to loose?
