Hi folks,
My 4 year old son locked my truck with the keys in it. Im along way from home to get the other set of keys. Any way to get into the truck? I've got the hood open.
:help:
Thanks in advance. I hope I posted in the right section.

On star?

Other then that, not much you can do. You sould be able to find someone with lockout tools to get you in.

Also with the serial # a gm dealer can cut you a key.

Thanks Max, that is just what I figured. Just my luck to happen on a holiday weekend. No Onstar. Thanks for the quick reply.

not to add fuel to the fire, but I'am wondering why your truck does not have onstar......mine had the antenna from the factory...it was free for the first three months and then they made me pay,but if you have the option they might help you out.....just a thought....they might want you to "sign up" but it would be worth it if the alternative was a locksmith on a holiday weekend...just trying to help-

Heard you could use a cel phone to open the doors if the other person on the phone has your spare key fob and presses the unlook button . Dont know from personal experience .

Onstar doesn't do you much good if you are locked out of your truck.Would be cheaper to get a locksmith, than bust a window.BEEN THERE-DONE THAT!

I would pay for on-star if I was in a similar situation.

The only thing is I am not sure how quickly they can set you up. If the cell system was deactivated it might take time to assign a phone # and get it set up with the local provider etc.

It takes Kathy less than 5 min to get OnStar to unlock her truck.

Here's another tip:

If you have any other GM vehicles around, try their keys. I can't tell you how many times I done this over the years and it had it work. They really don't make very many different keys.

My OnStar was free for a year. It's XM that is free for only the first 3 months.

OnStar is an option...not all trucks have it. OnStar is free for a year, XM is free for 3 months.;)

only the 2001-2005 LT's/SLT's have OnStar standard, and for 2006 its not standard on any trim levels.

Thanks guys,
Onstar was not put in the truck. My wife wanted it, so I think the next truck will have it. I called GM roadside assitance and they sent a locksmith out and the truck is open. 2 hour turn around time is pretty good if you ask me. I'm very happy with GM's service.
Thanks again for everyones quick help, that is what makes this site so awesome.

I got locked out of mine the second day I had it. I did not know the damb thing would lock automatically when you least expect it. I ended up calling AAA road service and a rollback hauler was there within 20-minutes. He pulled out his special unlocking tools from under his seat and had the door open within 3 minutes. I went straight to town and bought 3 duplicate keys. One stays in my wallet.

You guys must leave your keys on the console or seat, because I thought GM had an anti-lockout system on their trucks where if the key is in the ignition, the doors won't lock.

My keys were left in the ignition while making a brief stop at a friends house.

I thought about posting how you can do this by using a wedge in the top corner of the door and about 2 feet of a stiff metal rod (clothes hanger). But then I realized that I would be telling people how to break in to a car.

Usually not condusive to my profession, but it works;) .

That is how the tow-truck driver opened mine. But his wedge was a flat bladder canvas/rubber type bag with a hand pump attached. He slipped it in at the top corner of the door and pumped up the bag separating the door until there was enough room to stick the wire/metal rod through to reach what ever? to unlock the door. I dont know if he reached the door unlock button or what but it only took him a couple of minutes. The biggest problem he had was the tinted glass blocking his vision to see where his tool was guided.

I always keep a spare key in a hide away key box. I had to use it several times and thankfully I had it. Just a thought, they are cheap and easy to hide;)

:exactly: I made a hidden key container out of a old plastic film cannister and a small rare earth magnet/cup (rare earth magnets are much stronger than a normal magnet of the same size) mounted to the bottom - you may have to hacksaw the key a bit to fit...been a year and it still hasn't fallen off. I've had to use it a couple of times...cheaper than $25/month OnStar fee.

I wasn't raggin' you Mike. I also think OnStar is worth it. While most people have used it to unlock their truck, I left my truck and thought I forgot to lock it. I didn't want to drive all the way back to check, so I called OnStar and sure enough, they can also send a lock command. I already signed up for three more years.

I don't know to much earth magnets but hide akey are sold just about everywhere. They are cheap and they stay put and keep the keys clean.
I usually keep mine under the drivers side back fender well where the frame is . There are several channel that runs from one side of the frame to the other, they stay there and don't move;)

Parking brake on or off makes no difference. Those of us who drive handshakers wouldn't be able to lock the truck if the parking brake affected the door lock. Had that experience once with my 2000 Silverado. I went to the shooting range and pulled the key out just enough to kill the door chime while I was getting my stuff together. I got out, hit the lock button and went off to have some fun. I didn't discover my screw up until I came back. Luckily, I had left the windows cracked and was able to find a stiff piece of wire to fish through the window and hit the lock button. The factory alarm system was a little annoying, but at least I could get back in the truck.

On Star is nothing more than useless trash.. Does not work in the mountains around here.. Does not work in the citys very good either.. Junk system that simply put is a total waste of time... Wish GM didnt' force it on my order... Used it once could not give me the codes that my truck was throwing... Totally useless.. Oh we can run diag on your truck once a month and tell you if it has problems.. WTF you can not give me the code out of the computer but you can run diag.. They should stop prompting something they can't do for the 06s... New computer so they can not read sh-t.. Or atleast back in Fed-march they couldn't.. When the free year is up the whole thing is getting disabled...

If you don't have Onstar set up, it takes them 72 hours to make its features available to your truck.

What's the point if you live in an area where there is little to no reception for it? Waste of money and you're stuck with the antenna on the roof.

My wife hated crawling under the truck looking for where I hid the key when she got locked out. I then installed a hidden all-weather momentary switch tied into the electric locks on a 95 Tahoe I had. That got me in several times. We have the switches installed on several vehicles at work too.

Plastic case hide-a-key rides perfectly inside the front hanger of the drivers side rear leaf spring. The magnet is stong enough, but even if it were to slip some it can't go anywhere. Can't tell you how many times i've used it.

Nope if the key is in the ignition, you cannot lock yourself out, you can hit the door lock button and it will automatically unlock the drivers door, unless you acutally push the keyfob and leave them in the truck. Which in that case you have problems.....

Mr. Nelson... Of all people, You are one of the last I expected to see endorsing OnStar.

I ordered my truck without it. If it was free for the life of the truck, I'd have let them install it. Not worth $700. a year for what you get JMO. Already have a cell phone, a spare key is hidden on the truck in case of lockout, I just don't need it.

I wish I could find a Tech 2 that cheap....OnStar isnt quite 1500-2500 dollars per year. ;) :)

Im not going to go on an OnStar parade, but ive been glad ive had it more than once...its worked dozens of places where my cell phone did not work at all, way out in the woods down trails etc. And for "forcing it on you" they didnt for 2006...it used to be standard on the LT's, but for 2006 its an option even on the LT's. As for the antenna's, I guess thats preference...I like my OnStar and XM antennas up there with the roof lights...looks like an airplane or spaceship or something with all those antennas. :D

Because its helped me more than a few times, ill continue to pay for it, but even if I didnt want to pay for it, id definetly use the one free year....I dont understand people that are so paranoid they feel the need to actually remove the box from their truck the day they buy the truck...for the last time, no one is watching you anymore with OnStar then they are if you didnt have OnStar. You're not going to get a ticket via OnStar.

ok rant off, tin foil ha---I mean flame suit on ;)

Actually Ben it can come on randomly... On my brother's truck it came on, so we just hit the button and turned it off.. Woman came back on all pissed off because we cut the call off.. It wasn't even supposed to be activated. So I pulled the fuse and the antenna off the box behind the glovebox. He only has it because he bought a used truck, otherwise his truck would be like mine, free of that crap...
