: Junk Injection Pump(see pic)
Mad4aMax 05-24-2006, 09:38 PM Have any of you seen a duramax injection pump"self destruct"? A '01 w/98k came in the other day with fuel pooring out the injection pump, down the valley & over the transmission! Looked like the service ports on the sides Blew out & let fuel go everywhere. Truck still ran believe it or not. After removing the pump you could see metal all inside & the (internal piston pump springs broken & the internal cam worn! Sorry about the pic, only 1 of 3 turned out!

Dang
Got Juice? 05-24-2006, 09:52 PM More prevalent on the CTD due to the configuration of the ports.
Really not an issue on the DMX. Probably 1 in 1000 in our camp, CTD's probably 1 in 500.
steve97tt 05-24-2006, 10:41 PM Yup. Pump went out on our '01 with about 100k. Fuel sprayed everywhere.
cdi 4 u 05-24-2006, 10:48 PM I have an 03 4500 chevy with the banks 6 gun and speedloader. We stopped at a light and The truck died. Local dealer said the cp3 pump blew up and shot junk to the injector. I took the truck home by wrecker. I need advice. parts and labor$:( oh. 126,000 miles
Mad4aMax 05-24-2006, 11:36 PM The only way I have anything that might help you is if the truck was put in service in 2004(if it was setting on the dealer lot for a long while)because I believe those things have a 2yr unlimited mileage warranty from the date the vehicle was put into service! if you have the VIN I can try and check the inservice date if you don't remember or are not the original purchaser!
Super Diesel 05-25-2006, 12:29 AM The high pressure side of the pump is the same on the CTD and the Dmaxs with the exception that the common rail feed port is on the back of the CTD pump instead of coming out the side of the pump. Cam, pistons, check valves, springs, spring cups, thrust washers, as well as flow volume, yada, yada, yada, all the same (got em both sittin here in front of me). The face plates are the only real major differance. Looks like a spring cup got floated and distroyed by the pumps cam. Anyone want to try to speed theres up and see what happens? I've seen this before (unfortunatly).

I know what you are saying. But the fact remains i have seen more dodge HPCR pumps leak and FRAG than the ones on the DMX. Mounting stress/Hardpoint vibration? Feed port? (that one is doubtful though)
Just an observation.
Super Diesel 05-26-2006, 01:17 AM I've tried to make mine leak by pushing 120+psi to it (witnesses) on the low pressure input. No such luck. Strange why they are leaking (I've heard about this problem in the Dodges). Seals are the same in them too.

Got me on that one????
But ya, they seem to want to puke seals on the CTD's
Mad4aMax 05-27-2006, 02:52 PM I don't think this started leaking 1st then came apart internally, I think it came apart internally & caused excessive pressure or something because both of the 1/2" diameter service ports or holes were laying in the valley of the engine!, large pices of metal inside & all 3 of the springs were broken & smashed! It was kinda neat.
NCMIC 06-05-2006, 08:31 PM man thats got to hurt. suffered from implosion, makes sense.
sled_mack 06-05-2006, 09:09 PM I hope he is getting all injectors replaced too....
bhinrichs 07-25-2006, 01:51 AM I found diesel leaking out of my truck. It is in the shop, they tell me it is the pump leaking into the valley and running down the back of the engine. Mine is bone stock, 83000 miles.
There were no codes, it ran fine, just began stinking of diesel from the coating I was getting underneath and up the back.
They tell me they have "seen a few do this". Apparently it is a non-stock item in dealerships, as I have been waiting over a week for an ordered replacement pump to arrive.
In the past, I have had dealerships put "remanufactured parts" on vehicles with this many miles but still under warrantee. Is this something I should worry about here?
Is this like the transfer case issue (had that too)? They can repair it, but it could easily come back, after the warrantee is up.
Thanks,
Bert
dmaxalliTech 07-25-2006, 08:18 AM I hope he is getting all injectors replaced too....exactly my thoughts, I dont think they will be far behind
Frank Blum 07-26-2006, 01:43 AM Super Diesel, the only thing you do when you boost the inlet to the HP pump is add that pressure to what the HP already makes. Example: HP pump stock pressure 23K. HP pump with 120 PSI on the inlet to the LP pump 23, 120 PSI. Later! Frank
JOHNBOY 07-26-2006, 12:02 PM I Buddy of mine with a CR Dodge bought some kind of overdrive kit to increase pump RPM. I told that did not sound like such a great idea. I said all the GM guys seem to prefer 2 pumps instead. Must be a reason. Now I think I know why. Thanks for posting that picture.
nwpadmax 07-26-2006, 12:42 PM One possibility would be that one of the springs broke and the chunks got in places with zero clearance. Everything else is pretty strong, which is probably why it self-destructed. That cam could apply some unbelievable forces on the body if pieces got to moving around in there.
