Need some advise for a friend of mine. He has a 05 2500 truck with the 6.0 and yesterday took it in for a SES light. They pulled a MAF code and kicked him out the door when they saw his K&N filter. They said chances are its just dirty, but because the K&N pulls more air, they can go no further. Charged him $60 for 10 min of tech II time. Dudes truck is bone, bone stock except for a drop in K&N filter.

I know they can deny him warrenty because of a simple filter...right? Truck only has around 16,000 miles.

Any help/info I can relay to my buddy would be appreciated.

Betcha the K & N filter was a little over oiled and it got on the MAF sensor. A cleaning should do the trick. Do a search on how to do this. As far as the warranty is concerned, I think that you should tell your friend to switch dealers. The one he has now is too trigger happy.

Thats pretty much what the dealer told him...too much oil. But its the "ditch the K&N, or lose your warrenty" attitude that pisses me off.

They didnt even clean it for him...they just told him how to do it himself and sent him out with his SES still on.

I ran a amsoil filter in my old 6.0 gasser and had to clean the MAF sensor a few times. Easy to clean, get non residue leaving electrical cleaner. I happen to have some from my motors on an rc truck.

Tell your buddy to buy a paper filter for the truck, swap it out for the K&N,throw the K&N in the garbage and take it to a different dealer.

K&Ns are nothing but a pain is the ***. I bought into their marketing BS and bought one for my '98 Z-71. After one OCI I took it off and threw it in the ****can. Before and after UOAs showed the K&N let way more dirt in than a paper filter, and the minimal gains from a K&N aren't worth the extra wear on my engine.

If you're buddies truck is bone, bone stock he won't see any benefit to the supposed increased air flow of the K&N. If he had some mods to increase flow,he might see a few more HP with the K&N,but is 2-3 HP really worth it?

Technically the truck has been "modified" and the dealer CAN flag his VIN, thereby killing his warranty. GM won't pay for them to clean his MAF sensor, or clear his codes because of his "modification". BUT they should have informed him in a better way than was told to you.
I wonder if the dealer has been through/ about to go through a GM warranty audit? Those will make any dealer trigger happy for awhile. Just the threat of said audit scares many a svc. manager.

Good info guys...I will pass it along.

I agree with the K&N vs. Paper/OEM.....For some reason, I havent taken them out of my own trucks. Guess I need to. :D

I have read the comparison that someone did on this site....that alone should get me off my A$$ and take those K&N's off my trucks. Does anyone know if theres a paper filter replacement for my intake setup?...or am I stuck with the OEM air box? I like my K&N intake system, but I dont like the filter.

OR....Should I ditch the K&N setup and go back stock because its sufficient for the D-max engine?

If you decide to trash your K&N send it here. I'll pay the s&h. I still like them. Never had any dealer around here say boo about 'em.
