im just wondering how far down should i let my EGT go before shutting the engine off? i let it get down to 300 degrees. is this good or should i go lower? cause right now it doesnt sound good when i shut it off. it shutters every time and sometimes (about 1 outta 3) it makes a ping noise. the shudder doesnt bother me so much as the ping. what could it be?

shudder? like the whole truck shakes? that's just from the heavy parts coming to a stop.
you don't like the shudder then you'd hate the cummins (01 at least) friend truck shakes so bad on shutdown the doors have a lot of up and down play from opening the doors when it's happening.
i think 300degrees is good. i don't think i can get mine much lower than that if i tried. approx how much time do you take to let it get that low?

Kinda like the wet dog trying to shake water off isn't it?! LOL!!! It's just the nature of a high compression engine with alot of heavy parts coming to a stop.

350 and below are good temps to shut down at. Mine I think shuts off around 330.
the shaking is a high compression motor coming to a halt.

not long at all, i think the exhaust helped alot. unless ive been beating on it. but my work is right off the interstate and after cruising at 75 it takes about 30 seconds of idle to get down to 300. for around town driving half that. if ive got a few extra seconds ill let it go down to 280. but right now warm idle is at 250 and that takes a little under a minute to reach after highway driving (60mph & under) but ive also noticed while passing people (flooring it from 60 up to 80) it jumps to around 1000. okay so the booty shakin is normal but what could that ping be?

maybe your belt is just squeeking a little bit?
"ping" is such a broad term it would be anything. we're going to need some kind of video or audio file. maybe you can get someone to stick their head under the hood while you shut it off to better pin-point it.

Where is your probe?
Mines in the exhaust manifold and I shut down at 320.

yeah, mines in the passenger side manifold also. ill try to find a way to get a recording. i dont know much about diesels yet, but it doesnt sound like a good noise. its a high pitched metal on metal ping if that helps though
