I thought they would have fixed this by now am I right or wrong or am I the only LLY that has "Normal" Tick http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gifTurbo6600

I started hearing a noise from mine recently and I am wondering if it is the "tick". The noise on mine is very irregular like tick,tick,tick.................tick.........tick.. .tick, tick and I can only hear it at idle and only if I have the window down or am outside the truck. To me it souds like something is loose and intermittently, lightly rattling against something else. I don't know how to descritbe it better.

Only noise from mine is a rattle in the dash board, 4000miles so far, just started last week, if I put my hand on the dash down by the vin area it stops.

I have the Tick too! Mine comes and goes and is a lot more noticeable around 2500 + RPM'S or when the truck is cold first thing in the AM. This isn't the pilot injection shutting down, but I guess we have to live with it. It's funny we have a work truck LLY purchased about two weeks before mine came in and not a Tick at all, Oh well!

No tick on mine yet. Redneck, just for sh!its and giggles check your interior power panel. It's right next to the parking brake pedal and make sure the cover os on there nice and snug. Mine was loose and I tightened her up after I hooked up the Prodigy brake controller.

Messed around with the dash plate and it seemed to stop for now--maybe temperature dependent?

Well after 1000 miles I have the tick. Funny thing it didn't start till after changing the oil. I guess we will see if it goes away. Almost sounds like a lifter but its not. $40K and a tick as a bonus.

GM had that magical tick-tick free oil figured out from the beginning. Stuff must be thick as Texas tea.

turbo43

I've had the tick ever since I brought the truck home. When I first heard it I thought there was something loose like a cover or something underneath the engine, because it wasn't a consistent tick. the sound was coming from the drivers side wheel well. After reading a few posts here and the tsb from gm I concluded that I have the dreaded tick too.

Polar
06-29-2004, 01:42 PM
I had the tick after the first oil change and throughout until the second when I used synthetic oil. After about 100 miles the tick disappeared and I haven't heard it since, it's been about 3500 miles tick free. My LB7 had the tick for over 25,000 miles before it went away and still it would come back from time to time.

I have got a ticking noise once the truck heats up. You can only hear it at idle with the windows down. Is this what you guys are talking about or do I have something else wrong. It sounds like it is coming from the left side of the engine.

turbo43
06-30-2004, 11:21 AM
yeah that's the same thing I have. It really Ticks me off alsohttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif But gm claims that this is normal. Say for anyone that knows, If you have the tick does that mean that you have a better motor since gm says this tick comes from close tolerances. Just a question

04ROB

Its annoying, sometimes the tick is louder than the engine, I think at lights people wonder if there is something wrong,

I think, that perhaps the oil pump is cavitating and compressing air in the oil, just as soon as the oil is exposed to less pressure it expands and pops or ticks, (pure theory and guesstimate)

I think some oils contain more antifoaming additives and may help, or when the pump begins to break in.

It doesn't do it when its cold only when warmed up. I'd really like to know for sure what it is as opposed to theorizing,

Any other theories?

Hello everyone. Its my first post here. I've been reading the forum here for the past half-year or so but have decided to register due to this post. There is a good explanation to the ticking here and i believe this is a good answer (scroll down near the bottom): http://www.thedieselpage.com/duramax/durafaq.htm

I believe it because of some of the links i have put together. LanduytG mentioned that it occurs after an oil change, and mike04 said it happens after it warms up at idle. My dad's 2003 LB7 does the exact same thing. I dunno, just an opinion.

Mine is just like Mike04 explains.

turbo43
07-01-2004, 02:00 PM
so why do some do it and others don't if it's the oil pump. Is there that much of a variance between each oil pump that is manufactured?

I wouldn't be surprised if there was. I remachine and rebuild oil pumps and replace the old gears in new engines I rebuild. I have a noticeable difference in performance with pumps that have as little as .002 clearance between cover and gear face, Oil carries huge amounts of air in it. Minor differences can make big changes.

I don't think we are impressing anyone with the typewriter noise under the hood. Maybe thats why so many people want louder exhaust?

It might be that certain brands of oil can move the truck out of the TICK zone. When I got my truck there was no tick. Don't know what oil GM put in. At the first change to Shell Rotella synthetic, TICK appeared and stayed for a few hundred miles. TICK disappeared and has stayed gone even after the second oil change.

Anybody have the TICK disappear after an oil change?

I guess I might as well jump in and join the TICK TICK TICK Club along with the rest of ya, Mine started to Tick as soon as I pulled out of the dealers lot with only 32 miles showing on the dial, I guess GM made an improvement on the new 2005 and made a few adjustments so us new owners don't need to wait for the first oil change to enjoy the rhythmic and soothing sounds of a Ticking enginehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif.

No tick here yet, but I've only got 1200 mi on mine. Alot of the posts mention that it started after an oil change. For those that had this happen, what brand of oil did you use when the tick started?

Westwind, its running good and the ride is almost car like which surprised me because of it being a single rear wheel 3500, but then again I got the long bed which I feel gives a nicer ride because of the longer wheel base , as far as the Ticking goes I'm just going to drive it and enjoy the truck because I noticed quite a few owners on here are reporting that the Ticking disappears after the first or second oil change, and a couple have said that when they switched to synthetic oil it disappeared also, so I'm just going to wait and see what happens after the first oil change, tomorrow I'm taking a trip to the paint store to see if they can match my interior paint so I can spray my piller and install my gauges, then comes the new exhaust system, I got to be chili for a while on how much money I spend, because the wife laid down the law and told me to take it easy for a while, besides that I cant argue with her since shes the one who saved up the money and bought it for me.

ticking started at about 700 miles. changed oil 50 hrs. i use delo 400 5w 40 synthetic in jd tractors, car and boat. and truck. good oil. 50hrs is about 2500 miles. tractors at about 250 hrs.unbelieveable conditions. hot and much dirt. ticking has never varied, still strong.

My 02 didn't tick and my 05 doesn't tick as well. Oh yea, I forgot to mention, I'm deaf as a doorknob. Comes in handy sometimes, especially when some chatterbox is sitting next to you mumbling on about something you could care less about. Selective hearing is a wonderful thing. My tick started before first oil change (1200 miles) but went away
after first oil change (Rotella). Now I only hear it after a hard
drive.

Maybe Eric could start selling "tick collars" for us to wear while in
the trucks. If they're good enough for dogs - they should be good
enough for us!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif

No ticking yet at 2,500 miles (changed oil at 2,000 miles with Rotella T 15W-40). Just a lot of injector rattle at 2,500RPM.

i changed my oil 2 days ago on my 05 2500HD, LLY it had 565 miles on it and yesterday i noticed the intermintant tick tick tick at idle either sitting in the cab with the window down or standing next to the front wheel wells, i crawled under the truck both running in nuetral and in gear and its pretty loud under the truck by the motor and tranny to me it sounds like the exhaust or a heat shield i will have to take a metal bar and my ear drum to pin point it. Regardless if its normal or not it has to come from something besides (NORMAL) thats the answer i got when i was five years old because at five years old most things are to complex to understand, and now at the age of 40 when i hear the answer its normal for the unknown i wonder why it cant be explained then!

I know the feeling, like I said after my first oil change the same thing happened. I asked the dealer and they said it is normal, due to the tight tolerences of the D-Max. I say B.S. but they claim all the D-MAx engines do it. They even showed me a TSB explaining the TICK

Based off of the posts it sounds like it's unfortunatley normal http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif
