Several years ago I installed a push button manual glow plug system on my '82 Chevy P/U (6.2L diesel). It has worked well, but there are occasions when the relay will not operate. I recently replaced the relay, but after sitting overnight on hot days, the same problem occurs. It is an intermittant problem.

Question 1: Is there a way to bypass the controller altogether?

Question 2: Other postings indicate that "In an emergency, you could just power the glow plug relay directly from the battery..." How do you do that? The relay is located on the driver's side near the left battery.

Thanks!

Maybe you dont have a problem with it. the controller has a temperature switch in it. reaches a certain temp and the glow plugs dont come on.

especially when youre talking about sitting overnight on hot days. engine is hot, outside temp is hot..the engine might not cool down enough that glow plugs are needed anyways.

Thanks for the reply! Yes, I agree. It has worked well since I converted it several years ago. Only lately has it had this problem, and sometimes it occurs in cool weather. It may be a wiring problem. I do not want to replace the controller and wondered if there was a way to bypass the temperature lockout feature.

Bypass solution . JUMP the 2 wire together ,weld them together put electrical tape or (thermo-retractor isolator IIRC) the tubing who shrink when heated.
that way the GP will alway go on when you start you engine, even if not needed.

its built into the glow plug controller. drivers side, behind intake manifold. 85+ has rectangular connector. 82-84 is a cylinder type.

Convert it to a manual momentary glow plug switch system.

Thanks, Ed. Which 2 wires do I weld together?

The problem may be solved. I disconnected the cap on top of the controller and cleaned the pins/contacts. So far, pushing the manual push-button has activated the glow plugs each time.
