I am considering attempting to overhaul my TH700. I am intending to do the work myself (don't attempt to change my mind on that- I have no choice). It is either rebuild it myself or go with a manual.

I am trying to figure out what all I need to buy to rebuild (or at least repair) it. Right now I am having trouble with it shifting late or not at all, slipping a little bit, chattering, occasionally going out of gear completely (at speed), and jerking when I pull away from a stop.

Any thoughts on what to buy?

Thanks!

How many have you done? You better be good or go for the stick.

unless you have some experience rebuilding them, you better put a stick throught the floor if ya want it to last. i tried that 700 junk a few times on an ol 85 model. after rebuilding it 3 times myself and paying some trans shop to rebuild it 4 times, i ended up putting in a sm465. my $.02, but its your truck and money! good luck

get one out of a junker because the last one i overhauled was close to a grand for parts. of course i changed the torque converter , front pump every seal and all bearing and bushings and its the one i just drug home got close to 80k on that rebuild.

I'll be honest with you, I've never done one. It's going to be interesting.

I'm still weighing my options at this point. I can't afford to have it done (WAY too expensive). I posted on the 6.2L forum, and the general feeling was that I should not put a stick in. They didn't seem to like that idea at all. So I figured I'd check and see what all I'd need to do the overhaul.

I know that they are supposed to be difficult to overhaul, but I am not in the least afraid to do it. I've done plenty of stuff that most people say requires a specialist to do. I have plenty of places to get help if I need it, and I know plenty of people who can help me figure it out if I get in a bind.

Anyway, I noticed that you can get rebuild kits for not a lot of money. Are these good, or are they just a gimmick that includes a bunch of stuff I probably won't need and only one or two things I will need?

if you do it i allways take it as far as you can because who wants to pull it apart again? i have done 30 or 40 auto's in my spare time and i really didn't see anything any more trickey in a 700 than the old 350 , 400, c6, or c4. get the best rebuild kit you can and a good book with plenty of pics. and keep components laid out in order because some of the parts look interchangeable. if you have a camera stills or movie take pics. of it comming apart. some clutch assemblies will have room for xxx amount of springs but come from the factory with two less. its ok just put it back that waay. do not mix parts from clutch assemblies. all common sense stuff. i buy my parts from a local rebuilder , cost more but he points out upgrades you can do . make sure and blow out cooler lines and check the cable from trans to back of inj. pump for fraying. i have allways had people tell me i can't do this or that and that will allways get me going. have to addmit sometime it would have been cheaper to let some one else do it but now i know how.

Well, something has turned up that is going to force the issue.

It's toast. No more second gear. The fluid on the dipstick looks like mud, and there are metal particles sticking out of it. Not good.

We'll see where I go from here...
