: Improve MPG
GMCsteve 05-19-2006, 12:54 PM I would like to know what can I do to improve mpg. I have been told that changing the exhaust and adding a performance tuner would help. Is this true or just a sales pitch?
I love this trk and it has plenty of power. I'm only interested in improving MPG.
I have a 2002 2500HD D/A CC 4x4 with the 8' bed. I currently get 16.4 MPG to and from work (60 Hwy miles round trip). The best MPG I have seen was 17.4 on the open road. I currently have 57k miles on the trk.
Thanks,
GMCSteve

are you using the D.I.C to get your mpg, or is that hand calculations?
do not trust the DIC, as it lies about as much as your fuel gauge!
You can install a 4" cat back exhaust, some say remove the cat, but I have yet to find a shop in my town that will:mad:
Also look into a cold air intake.
I just recently got a tuner, and havent been able to keep my foot out of it to see if i can give me improved mpg. I did gain over 1 mpg though with the tuner, hand calc
tbusciglio 05-19-2006, 01:11 PM I don't think adding exhaust by it self will do anything noticeable, mine didn't. Some say running a economy tune will, but it really boils down to driving habits.
GMCsteve 05-19-2006, 01:36 PM My MPG is hand calculated. My driving speed is from 55 - 65 Mph to and from work.

aint that the truth!
Last tank was 18.6 hand calculated and drive approx 60 miles roundtrip with a combo of stop and go and mostly freeway. I am currently running a bullydog powerpup on the mid-tune (waiting for my edge to be replaced), plus a 4" MBRP duals exhaust. All else is stock. When I dropped the pup tune for a quick trip to the dealer, my mileage when down to 16.8. I also don't drive it like I stole it, but I don't drive like my grandma either.

I thought so too untill I did the exhaust and programming on mine and with more aggressive driving picked up 1.5mpg in my favor.

What tune are you running?
'03duramax 05-20-2006, 03:46 PM mine averages 18.4 hand calc, half city, half freeway. And I drive mine like it's stolen, usually on level 4

I have EFI Live, so I can run a multitude of tunes. That said, I have not had the time to play around with it too much; i currently run a mild economy tune by Tony aka Tony the Tuner (Moonshine). It is a fun tune to drive, and has helped with my fuel economy in conjunction with the removal of my Kitty.
On a side note the 5" catless exhaust sounds great.

GMCsteve 05-22-2006, 11:31 AM I was thinking about the dual exhaust setup. I haven't decided on a tune yet. Not sure I want to spend the money if it's only going to buy me 2 more MPG's.

Hey Steve,
I know that 2mpg's doesnt sound like alot of $ savings, but it adds up quickly, the chart below will show you how much.
