: duallys - tire rotation?
How many of you with dually's rotate your tires. I have an old 93 single wheel as well as the new dually. On the 93 once I get tires balanced so I've got a good ride I don't touch them until they're shot (50-60,000 with Michelins). Doesn't seem like it's worth the time & money if the truck is riding ok. Even with new tires it can take a couple times to get the ride right. I've got about 11,000 miles on the dually so it's time to play rotate & balance or run em.
I start thinking about rotating when they hit 5,000 and try to make sure it's done by 7,000. Past experience indicates if I go beyond 7,000, they don't wear nearly as well.
That's just the way I handle it and I've driven dually's since '85.
painter 04-27-2004, 06:59 AM I put on 40k a year. I am not going to pay to rotate and I'm too damn lazy to rotate every three months. they seem to be wearing fine i'm almost to 30k
jbh2000 04-27-2004, 06:44 PM RMax...don't know if WallyWorld has made it that far north, but they do lifetime rotation for 7.50 a tire. I've had mine rotated every 5-6000 miles since new, and my 52,000 mile OEM tires look like they could go another 20,000 miles. They won't, but they look like they could.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
Thanks for the opinions. Thought maybe I was alone not wanting to rotate. I assume you have to buy the tires at Wallyworld to get that deal which is an idea for next time. Sears also does it for free if you buy there. And yes, wallyworld has made it way up here, a sure sign of civilization?
Thanks
cowboydave 04-28-2004, 12:03 AM I have the tires on my Dodge 3500 rotated every 5,000 miles. I get free rotation when I bought the tires at Sam's club. However, I had to create an instruction sheet (with diagrams) to show how to do it correctly. What i mean by correctly is that I want to maintain the rotational integrity. I also found that if you don't sit there and watch them, they don't follow the plan. My last set of tires lasted 65,000 miles, and I haul a 14,000 Lb trailer. So i figure rotation helps.
bigRazor 04-28-2004, 09:45 AM I rotate the tires with every oil change on all my vehicles. It's easier to grease the front-end and check the brakes. My fronts look pretty rough by the time they get rotated. I don't think they would last very long without it.
jbh2000 04-28-2004, 10:35 PM RMax...No, you don't have to buy the tires at Wally World. $7.50 per tire buys you rotation and balance for as long as the tires last. Paid my 51.50 plus tax back in 2001, and they're still rotating and balancing them. Like CowboyDave said, you do need to watch them to make sure they do it like they're supposed to. I just photocopied the page from the owner's manual and make sure they see it.
Dr Crane 05-02-2004, 10:33 PM 60,000 miles on mine and never rotated. Won't make another winter though. Personally I'm too lazy to rotate, it's hard enough doing G.O.F.'s at 5,000 which now is once a month!! I'll get another 15 to 20,000 miles out of them but wet roads with heavy rain is starting to get a little scary. Still have 3/16 tread left. Front tires starting to cup and wear on the outsides but still rides OK. A guy I work with got 95,000 on his tires on 1500 ext cab, he rotated every 3 to 5,000 miles!
Dr Crane 07-03-2004, 10:24 PM Thought this needs an update. 62,000 miles third time pointy rock went through tire, this time not repairable, so two new firestone R4S's. 65,000 miles rather spectacular blowout on rear, two more Firestone R4S's. Apparently these Goodyear casings can't take it any more. I'm going to be stupid and see how long the last two will go!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/uploads/tire_blowout_compressed.jpg
