: low boost
BlazeOneUp 05-17-2006, 12:12 AM when i installed my gauges about 6 months ago, i could get 8 lbs at wot, maybe 9 if the truck was in the right gear. in the past couple of weeks ive noticed that at wot, 4 lbs is about it. also at 70 mph boost dropped from around 5 lbs to under 3. vacume lines at gauge and plenim are sealed tight. the truck runs fine. turbo has no noticable sound difference. wastegate and vacume system are working properly as well. i even removed the inner wheel fender to get cold air to intake; no help. (btw its gettin hot here in the dub and egts were unaffected by fender removal) what gives? computer cutting boost? i probably would not complain about this if it wasnt for the lower mpg's (1-2) knoledgable minds please help, thanks.
Scrufdog 05-17-2006, 12:28 AM sounds like the wastegate solenoid may be starting to flake out. Your symptoms are the same as mine right before I stopped getting any boost at all (in the middle of PA mountains with an 8000lb trailer). Might be worth a shot to grab a solenoid (green dot) from the dealer since they are only 30-35 bucks.
dieselboy28 05-17-2006, 12:31 AM maybe you should look into building a homemade boost controller, that way you could set it to where you wanted and no more worries... just a thought
BlazeOneUp 05-17-2006, 12:57 AM i replaced my solenoid about a year ago, its kinda hard to imagine that its crapped out this soon; but maybe. they are cheap and a spare wont hurt if thats not it.
guybb3 05-17-2006, 06:23 AM i replaced my solenoid about a year ago, its kinda hard to imagine that its crapped out this soon; but maybe. they are cheap and a spare wont hurt if thats not it.
Exactly right.
Scrufdog 05-17-2006, 07:22 AM if ya want a quick test, just bypass the solenoid with a piece a vacuum hose and see if the boost returns. Just dont leave it like that so you dont overboost and blow something up.
Turbine Doc 05-17-2006, 12:15 PM If sig is correct with S engine, also possibly you have some EGR issues, check WG 1st, what is vac from pump,
You have 3 solenoids with a S all interact with total vac available & delivery of it. TS WG then report back may have some other things for you to check.
BlazeOneUp 05-17-2006, 07:22 PM egr is capped off. i dont have any vacume hose so i wired the wastgate shut and went for a drive. max boost was 2 psi. wtf. this defies all logic, no? there was no way the wastgate was opening, im stumped fer sur. any ideas?
BlazeOneUp 05-17-2006, 07:22 PM what does TS wastgate mean?
nickg 05-17-2006, 09:55 PM Did you wire it closed or open by mistake. (dont take this as an insult, I've done worse my self)
gmctd 05-17-2006, 10:10 PM Tie the steel wire from the WG arm along the rod and up across the actuator bracket- don't use copper wire.
EBP can stretch copper, wg only needs small opening to waste all exhaust pressure
BlazeOneUp 05-17-2006, 11:48 PM haha no im sure it was wired closed because i clamped it open the first time by mistake, zero boost. i used a salt water fishing jig, it didnt stretch. is this impossible or what? im lost...
Scrufdog 05-18-2006, 07:32 AM take off your intake pipe and make sure the turbo is spinning freely. Also, I see you lost your cat, still have a muffler that could have gotten blogged with something?
chrisk1500 05-18-2006, 09:52 AM I wonder if the gauge is crapping out on you...
BlazeOneUp 05-19-2006, 03:56 PM so after concluding that night that 2 psi with a closed wastegate was impossible, i went back found that the actuator did have a small amount of play, i guess enough to release most pressure. ive not had the time to make another attempt to close the wastegate. before i do, is wireing it shut the only option? any other ideas? i want make sure the turbo is capable of making proper boost before attempting to fix somethin that aint broke.
Turbine Doc 05-19-2006, 05:21 PM what does TS wastgate mean?
trouble shoot
what does turbo compressor wheel look like with the rubber boot off, do you have a split on the exhaust manifold, or turbo to engine hose leaking exhaust slowing turbo, or major bleed off of the boosted air.
Any codes, full retraction of the WG link arm into the actuator is closed, when commanded the WG bleeds vac supplied to the actuator opening the WG flapper, are you getting lots of heavy black smoke on hard acceleration?
