: Inj Pump??
Mike10secv6 04-25-2004, 11:51 AM I have a high mile 6.5 turbo diesel in my 94 full size blazer and over the last 2 years i have had a problem with it.
I have a hard start (cranks longer then normal)and fires up and will run all day........but with the service light on.
Then it will go away completely and start perfectly and then come back once in a while.
2 years ago the dealer said i needed an injection pump.......and big money!
I did not want to spend the money and have been driving it sence.
Could this be something else?
As i said it runs good either way except if i really get into it with the service light on it bogs and sounds like it detonates.
Thank you!
GREEN95CHEVY 04-25-2004, 02:09 PM HELLO, WELL FIRST WE NEED TO FIND OUT WHICH CODE(S) ITS THROWING. GET A PAPER CLIP OR A SHORT PIECE OF WIRE AND JUMP THE TOP RIGHT TWO TERMINALS ON THE ECU CONNECTOR ( SHOULD BE JUST BELOW THE DRIVER SIDE DASH) TURN KEY ON BUT DONT START ENGINE. COUNT THE FLASHES ON THE SES DASH LIGHT. EACH CODE WILL FLASH 3 TIMES. POST BACK WHEN YOU GET THEM.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
gmctd 04-25-2004, 03:03 PM That failure is intake, vacuum, wastegate solenoid, EGR solenoid, and EGR related.
All 1500 and some 2500 series are EGR equipped - the DTC's should point the finger.
Mike10secv6 04-25-2004, 03:49 PM OK i checked it, here goes...........
Code 17/18/19/32/33/35/36/54/76/78.
Just the odd code, lol.
I am going to unhook the batterys and then start it up again and see what code it stores.
I unhooked the egr myself, so that should be one of the codes.
Thanks!
I unhooked the negative battery cables and hooked them up again, but started with the same codes.
I was told when this type of startup problem happens the inj pump runs in mechanical mode like the 93 and earlier........true??
Maybe its time to trade it in, but it runs fine after the longer then normal cranking and service light on!
Also the motor is a little louder when it runs with the service light on.
Any ideas?
Thanks.Edited by: Mike10secv6
gmctd 04-25-2004, 04:26 PM All those taken together indicate inj pump has failed, and you have been driving in 'back-up mode' - no power and unresponsive.
????????
They could also indicate connector problems, possibly -
inj pump harness to engine harness - all those connectors around the inj pump - check and clean if oxidized\corroded
engine harness to PCM harness - all those connectors between the fuel filter and the firewall - same check and clean
17,18,19 - ip optical sensor
32,33 - EGR - could be vacuum
35,36 - Fuel Solenoid response time
54 - ambiguous - EGR, fuel pump, driver failure, ?
76 - digital cruise, from 17,18,19,35,36
78 - wastegate error - could be vacuum
And, by the way - 10-second V6?? Buick? Pontiac? Chevy?Edited by: gmctd
Mike10secv6 04-25-2004, 05:03 PM Thanks for the feedback, i have a low 10 sec buick gn (87).
I assume its a good time to trade it in, i am in the market for a pickup but am undecided as to which one.
Any opinions on the dealer take off pumps on ebay?
So far the duramax seems to pull the best, but i did drive a cummuns 2 years ago that felt real good.
gmctd 04-25-2004, 06:41 PM Cool - I insalled that GN engine in '87 Mitsubishi Starion in '88. Got the looks, got the go - in a 100"wheelbase. It's still around here, somewhere, temporarily in pieces. Used water-cooled turbo cartridge from T-bird, and some other 'stuff' for juice.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif
The dealer pull-off inj pumps can be a good deal - they mostly do not know what they're doing, as verified by Stanadyne, with 'most warranty replacement ip's returned (to Stanadyne) evidence no failures'. I think GM finally started just busting the ip's up, issuing no returns.
E-bay - depends if 'what you see is what you get', knowwhutImean?
Good wrenching on your truck.Edited by: gmctd
Bobt250 04-26-2004, 11:55 AM Something I learned the hard way once, which is a story I'll pass on telling. If the optical sensor fails it causes the IP to go into a default timing mode which results in significantly more diesel clatter.
Question: is that sensor replaceable and if so where would you get one? Could this solve his problem much less costly?
quantum mechanic 04-26-2004, 03:51 PM I'd be surprised if stanadyne didn't sell the sensors to their pump. I looked at a '94 6.5 with similar problems recently and recomended the optical sensor. I havn't heard back on that one yet.
16gaSxS 04-26-2004, 05:41 PM Here is a link to a fellow I think he's in Norway or Sweden but anyway he has a step by step guide to changing optical sensor.
http://www.turbodiesel.no/
it on the right hand menu on his home page.
quantum mechanic 04-27-2004, 11:17 AM I wouldn't trade my 6.5 for anything.
except a modified version of itself
Mike10secv6 04-29-2004, 10:21 PM Thanks for the info guys!
I now own 2 6.5 turbo diesels, just picked up a 98 express 2500........only van that has decent leg room!
gmctd 04-30-2004, 12:27 AM Guess that means the 10secv6 is no more?
Mike10secv6 04-30-2004, 01:30 AM Nope,I have too many vehicles now!
1987 Buick Grand National (10secv6).
1994 full size blazer 4x4 with 6.5 turbo diesel (for sale).
1998 Chev express 2500 van with 6.5 turbo diesel.
winchster 05-10-2004, 09:45 PM your ip on the 6.5 is warranted to 120k according to gm
