I know everyone here does it on the passanger side manifold. Why is it not done on the Down pipe like most turbo cars, powerstrokes, etc.. ???

Depends on where you want your reading. The Dmax turbo has been real tolerant of heat. I did mine in the exhaust manifold because I was concerned about egt's coming right out of the cylinder. Puttiny it in the downpipe is "post turbo". It doesn't give you very accurate cylindr reading but it does give you a good idea how hot the turbo is getting. I guess with the aluminum heads we were concerned about the heads getting too hot.

oh, so it is still the place to put it? I dont mind putting it where everyone else does. I was just wondering as to why they did.

There is only one reason to put it anywhere besides the manifold...laziness, if I am going to run the wires and drill anything and set it up in the cab..bet your ass I am gonna drill it in the correct location.

Neither is the correct location. It's all in what you are interested in seeing. Some guys want to see the heat coming out of the turbo. Gotta have a pyro there if you do. Then they subtract a few hundred degrees to estimate the cyliner egts.

In all honesty, which do you think is best to monitor??

Pre turbo in the exhaust manifold. Without a doubt.

how do you guys drill and tap the manifold and get all the metal out of the manifold?

Thanks Hoot. I assume the manifolds are still the same on the LLY correct? Just wanna make sure before I go to town on it. Thanks.

Now that i don't know. Hopefully someone else will chime in and possibly add that bit of info to that thread as well.

Hoot, where do you hook up a boost guage on these trucks? (lly)

Just followed the Hoot method of EGt install. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

IMO though, tap and drill may not be for everyone. The overall install took me more time than I will admit. I was afraid of screwing something up and the tap portion was brutal (my first time).

BTW, Edge Products install instructions calls for a 5/16" drill and a 1/8" NPT tap. Check that 5/16" size with the charts friend. IT WILL NOT WORK. You must use a size "R" or 11/32" drill for the 1/8" NPT.

LLY I have no idea except for the way I did mine.

I hooked mine up to a bung I had made and welded onto the aluminum intake tube. The sensor screwed into that.

The easiest way is to hook it up to the wastgate line if you have a LB7 engine. That reads boost pressure too.

The reason i took the hard way is I wanted my gauge "post intercooler" so I would be reading actual boost just before it enters the intake manifolds.

I think some guys pulled the cast intake tube that goes into the front of the turbo and drilled and tapped into it to install the sensor.

I suggest you post a specific topic in the LLY forum asking this question as some others may have some good ideas.Edited by: hoot

The Turbo is a huge heat sink.........

I saw 900 max post turbo in the downpipe........same stack on a pre turbo passenger mainfold install was pegging the 1600 degree gauge http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif.

Go pre-turbo .........and a competition probe for faster reading changes

I monitor both, to allow for adequate turbo spindown/oiling and to avoid a hot shutdown which is extremely hard on the turboshaft/bearing surfaces as it creates 'coking' of the oil, and can lead to turbine bearing failure over time.

HEY GUYS NEW TO THE FORUM JUST STACKED MY PITTSBURGH POWER BOX WITH THE PREDATOR AND THE EGTS WENT CRAZY.WITH THE PITT POWERMAX WIDE OPEN I WAS GETTING AROUND 1300 PRE TURBO.NOW WITH THE PREDATOR ON 120, AND THE POWERMAX ON 5AND5 THE EGTS ARE AROUND 1600.I KNOW THATS WAY TOO HOT.HOW DO I GET THE TEMPS DOWN.OR IS THIS NORMAL.WHAT KIND OF TEMPS ARE YOU GUYS RUNNING

That's not too hot for short bursts. It's what everybody gets.

Mackin, Pittsburgh Power box is a TST, if you look on tst's website, they sell a semi truck box made by Pittsburgh Power, hence they sell TST's box also. Just like ats sells tst's box and calls it the torque commander.

Kid, welcome to the site.

You ask about EGTs but keep in mind your transmission. I am probably late in informing you about stacking boxes and the Allison capabilities, assuming you have an Allison.

Do a search on the Allison and investigate its capabilities.

thanks for the reply.just changed my pyro gauge, went from a digital,to a manual gauge.temps went from 1600 to 1200,in the same location, manifold.so which one is right?which one should i trust?i have another gauge coming, going to put in the downpipe.
