If I simply modified the stock tune to defeat egr diagnostics, how would the dealer know?

Would he check?

If they were to do an IM test which checks the CVN values the tune would show up. Plus there are a few other ways they can check.

No way to tell. Not able to see any changes to programming, unless they know what they are looking for/at.

Steve is correct, if you modify any part of the tune the CVN (Calibration Verification Number) will not match what GM has on file so they will know it is not stock, restoring it back to dead stock will take care of the CVN.

Of course if it is just going in for a service I doubt they will send out the secret TechII police to interrogate your ECM, warranty claim?, maybe they would.

Ross

Some of these dealers are funky Ross. For some, it seams standard protocol to look to violate your warranty before denting the fender.

Thanks Steve

Just remember, you are taking the truck to the dealer for them to fix something. If anything else comes up it will be hard for you to reload the stock program while it is sitting in their service bay.
I took mine in for a check up before warranty was out, and free fuel filter and 6 weeks later got my truck back:eek:

It's the egr code, that leads to the questions and inspection.

I must admit, with my LS1 I could not wait for the warranty to run out so a performance shop could do the work as needed, it took one GM dealer 9 trys to stop a squealing power steering pump, but your story tops that by a mile!.

The dealership I go to does not sell high performance as far as I can tell, but they ignore the mods - of course I take it in with the stock program, but I don't bother with the exhaust, gages, tires, etc. I understand that they will not warranty the changed items, and I am ethical enough not to expect them to fix something under warranty which I have caused......like running the Bully Dog on extreme!!:muahaha:

 6 Weeks for a filter change!!!!??? What the Censored happened? Did you  someone off? I thought leaving mine for 9 days for a trans replacement was rediculous. I'll never take my truck to that dealer again.
Is there any one out there (besides some of the great vendors here) that gives a Censored anymore? Now I know what my father meant when he said things sure are different then when I was growing up. Amen!

Not just a filter change, it seemed down on power so i thought I would get it checked out. They found a couple of things check sig. still down on power, slow spool up. The dealer did not coordinate the repairs quickly but they got it taken care of. Pm me if you want the rest of the story.:(

but the question is do dealers even know what the heck a CVN is? I went to a dealer once asking for an ECM connector and they asked me if it was for the ECM itself or the spark control module.

Did you tell them for the spark module?, would have given someone a laugh when they tried to track that one down through spares.

In all I don't think the problem is with the mechanics, it's the time constraints they are under to get the job done. Like all things, just shop around to find a dealer that is good, if it means you need to drive a bit further distance then it's really no problem.
Out here in Australia you can now get your new vehicle 'serviced' by non GM dealers or a local workshop without voiding the warranty.

Ross

My home town dealer (I don't use) sells everything. As a matter of fact they have this whole catalog of aftermarket from chips to lift kits that they will install.

Still means notta if the Gm brass steps in and denys warranty 'payment' on warranty work.

Caution~ Gm dealers are independently owned and operated!
