1/31/04 10 Miles, Delivery Date
4/2/04 3727 miles, Fuel Pump Failure
4/6/04 Fuel pump R&R'd
4/24/04 4089 miles, 104hrs total, 14.91 mpg average(calculated)

1)Traded an 02 3500, D/A, CC, 4x4 with 32000 mi., no service issues or problems
2)LLY is quieter, smoother, more powerful
3)LLY gets slightly better fuel mileage than the LB7
4)I definitely prefer the LLY over the LB7 at this point even though the fuel pump failed.
5)I sure miss my Hot Juice! Edited by: RaceHemi

Problems: Bad turbo position solinoid, and bad turbo position sensor, around 300 miles. 2158 miles and nothing but praise for this truck. Mostly driving around town, one longer trip to visit in-laws and let them see the truck. Also, 600 miles of delivering feeder calves to sale barn. Pulled the loaded goose neck better than any truck that has ever been on the farm! Getting 16-17 MPG around town and on the trip, with 13.5 MPG round trip averaged while hauling calves. That was a lot better than I expected with that loaded trailer.

Picked mine up in late March, got around 4,000 miles, (changed oil twice, lubed once) no problems. So far only towed the walleye boat, about 3,500 lbs 4 times, had 600lb four wheeler in bed at same time once--can't even tell its back there. Oh, the trailer brakes don't work, and I don't need them! Old truck would'nt stop without them ('98 Z71).

My brand new 2004 2500HD, Duramax (LLY) is at the dealer due to engine hesitation between 1600-2000 RPMs. The dealer states that the EGR valve must be replaced. The truck only has 1,000 miles on it. Has anyone else had this issue? Is this a wide spread problem?

I hope this is not a sign of more trouble yet to come. I tow a 11,000# fifth wheel and don't need these type of problems on the road.

I have 2300 miles on my X cab and chassis with utility body. Has been problem free except for non operating fuel guage. Been in 2 x for the issue, and dealer is clueless. Seems to be a wide spread issue with cab and chassis. See fuel guage thread in tech orum for details.

I really love this truck, I traded a 98 6.5 for it, and the difference is astounding. I just wish GM would get on the stick regarding the fuel guage. I called the customer hotline last thursday, and had an appointment for them to call me back today, and they blew me off. Not real impressed with that type of customer service.

3,500 miles with 4" turbo back exh (with no drone or egr issues) Fuel gage didnt work right from the showroom floor. They put in a new sending unit as it was just hanging there flopping around. Now it is good ! Belt cricket noise ( i guess have to live with , only in the mornings), power strg noise upon decel/turning (sp?) sometimes, Biggest biatch is the mileage IF the DIC is reading right with my 265s. Dealer said they just got the new program in for the Tech 2 and reprogrammed my speedo but im not sure. Only about 13.6-14.0 driving hard town/hiwy combined and 16 highway @70 -75 empty.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif My 02 LB7 got about 15.5-16 all around and 20 @75-80mph. Love the truck but the LB7 felt better upon take off and immediate torque. LLY comes on later but pulls harder ! I think the LLY is faster just hope it pulls as good as the old one did. I REALLY miss my Hot Edge from the 02 !

Well, after reading all these great reports I am wondering what happened to mine???

Around 500-600 miles the engine was running so bad and smoking so much I thought I was in for a ticket. After all the work the dealer tried they could not fix it so GM said they would replace it.

Now a month or so latter GM called and said they would not give me another one because so many are being ordered they just don't have time to build me one!! Will so much for going to all the trouble to work out a settelment out of court with them after they send me a letter saying they would make me a new one. I guess everybody can change their mind now days.

Looks like the prices of the new 04's will be going up some more since they have to go to court again.

I have 17000 miles since picked up first week in may. Tow 6000-9000 lbs on a 2500 lb trailer, 100-350 miles per day. I have read every post on this site and have purchased almost all of my upgrades from the companies supporting it. I have amsoil dual bypass filter system with Delvac 1 oil, fumoto oil drain valve keeping my engine going. I have deep sump allison tranny pan with Transynd tranny oil keeping my tranny going. I have amsoil es2000 with gm additive in both differentials keeping them alive. I went with amsoil/Dahl fuel filter/water separator with 2 micron filter installed near tank in conjunction with stock racor built filter. I am using the K&N stock replacement filter until all companies have their air box systems available for me to decide which i think is best. Am still waiting for the verdict on turbo back stainless system or cat-back system for exhaust. I have been running beta lly juice/attitude for a month or so and am waiting for final code juice from edge. I have had one problem with truck and that was leaking rear axle seal on passenger side. I purchased new seal and paid 150.00 for local shop to install. I was originally going to replace my 1999 2500 with 6.0 and 250000 carefree miles with 8.1, I am glad I went with lly instead. This forum has been the most informative source of information i have come across. Thanks to all the techs and shade tree guys.

If it's overheating and has low power, something is very wrong. Mileage is always too dependant on conditions, but overheating and lack of power indicate engine problems. I drove a LB7 prior to buying a LLY, and while is not tremendously stronger, it certainly is not LESS powerful than a LB7. And towing in 95-100 heat through the mountains at 16,000lb combined weight at 80mph with the AC on full blast barely phased the temp needles.

Purchased 02 Jul 04 and have 2,000 miles on it. Traded in a 2001 8.1 gasser that kept one Arab sheiks yacht running. So far no problems what-so-ever. Probably did my last trailering with the 8.1. Bought the Duramax cause I'm 68 damn yrs old and just had to try a diesel before my license is pulled or I croak (whichever comes first). Really pleased I did so-so far. Fuel mileage is running 16.9 combined in town and road. The 8.1 had me jumpin' for joy when it got 13 to 14 on the hwy. In town traffic, try 7 or 8 mpg. It had to have been designed by a an Arab or oil baron.

After 10K miles, no problem of any kind. Mileage has been creeping up slowly. A recent trip across Nevada on cruise control 70mph got mid to high 18's mpg. Coming back at steady 80mph it dropped to 16.5....??? I've only done a little towing.

The parts man at the dealer told me about talking to a guy who had nothing but bad things to say about the Duramax....he had 120K miles on an '04, drove about 10K miles/month. He'd already had one motor replaced. The parts man asked him how often he had to have it serviced, and this bonehead said he didn't....just checked oil when warning lights started coming on.

Not surprising that your mpg dropped like that at 80. Anything over 70 seems to really hurt the mileage. Start pushing a little too much wind at that point!

Yes ,the odometers are correct.Thats what happens when they are being run 24/7 with team drivers. The LLY is running strong so far.We are having other issues with the truck that are not engine related.
