: hi,bying a new 2005 duramax need help?
jaybird 05-12-2006, 08:12 PM Hello,
I am suppose to buy a new 2005 bright red 4door srw 4x4 duramax monday for 38,000 and was wondering if a streetable 2005 dm with mods will always fall short in horspower and torque versus the newest 2006 with mods?
Will the newer 2006 always have the advantage no matter?
Also, this trucks invoice says it has locking diff rear axle ,is that on demand or full time and whats the advantages if any versus LS?
I think its a pretty descent price considering it has the DM,Allison,XM,onstar and rear entertainment dvd, power sunroof. What do yall think.
I'm a newbie here allthough I used to own an 84 cc dually 6.2 diesel with a banks turbo kit.
Thanks
Cougar281 05-12-2006, 08:43 PM I don't know for sure, but I would guess my truck with just the predator is putting out more then the LBZ (I was running the 85hp tune, but have been running the 100/120 for the last week or so), and it's very streetable.
SBCNX20 05-12-2006, 10:44 PM Buy an 06 thats a no brainer! 6sp (you'll learn to love it) less rpm and noise on HWY better mpg better short block and many other tweaks that make it worth it . Wish I waited!!!!!!!
Eaton auto locking differential. WAY better than limited slip. If one wheel looses traction then BOTH wheels get locked up full drive. No friction modifiers needed when you change the differential oil.

Although I LOVE my truck, If I were in your position, I'd buy the 2006.
jaybird 05-13-2006, 12:08 AM I'm with you all and agree about buying an 06 but,can I get an
06 crew cab 4x4 DMAX ,allison,xm,onstar, power sunroof, rear dvd entertaiment, bose stereo for 38,000 or are they alot more than that for a straight cash deal?

Thanks for the insight between the differences and the benefit of the eaton vs.not
vett502 05-13-2006, 12:20 AM Hey jaybird, I have an 01 LB7 and 04 LLY and drove an 06 LBZ a few days ago. There's a night and day difference. The 06 is the only way to go unless you can wait and see what 07 brings.
Springcrik 05-13-2006, 10:35 AM don't forget the 05 LLY overheating issue if you are going to be towing heavy, Jaybird!! There are lilterally hundreds of overheating posts on this forum on the 04 and 05 LLY
jaybird 05-13-2006, 12:05 PM Whats causing them to overheat?
McRat 05-13-2006, 12:11 PM Will the LLY fall short of the LBZ?
How fast do you wanna go? :D
Look at sig.
metalhead 05-13-2006, 12:13 PM omg:eek:   quiet down about the overheating:eek:   :joke:
RickDLance 05-13-2006, 12:24 PM The overheating discussions get "overheated". We are on a 10 day mandatory vacation from the o/h subject. Please do not discuss it here, simply search and read, for days.:)

No. :(
ken7728 05-13-2006, 01:41 PM we have a 2005 lly and are very pleased with it. If I had it to do over again I would probabkly get a 2006 because of the Allison 6 speed. We are towing a 14k fifth wheel and our lly does a super job. I got a superchips tuner for it and tow with it on tow safe. It give it a little more kick when towing and runs like a sports car when not towing. I'm sure I would get my jollys with the 6 speed and therfore I'm just as happy with the 5 speed . They are both superb transmissions and the older i get the harder it is for me to handle something as sophisticated as a 6 speed that you can shift your self. If I want to do that I just put our 5 speed in first gear and up shft it manually up through the gears I just have one less gear to shift. And we stiill get as high as 13 mpg towing our trailer and 21to 23 on the highway depending how fast I run it. To make a long story short you can't go wrong buying a 2005 lly with the Allison 5 speed!
Cougar281 05-13-2006, 03:06 PM ....unless you can wait and see what 07 brings.
I wouldn't do that personally. Think there's a lot of emissions crap on our trucks now? Wait for '07! -:t

Thats what I was hoping is that the 2005 is still a great truck if I take care of it.
I guess from what I'm reading here is that if I don't beat the crap out of the tranny by horseplaying/ruffhousing it that it will last longer than a dodge tranny will by a far margin.:D
I just did not want to go buying a bad setup.
Later on after I get 45-50,000 miles on it I was thinking of just doing an exhaust and edge or bully dog computer nothing much but that will be later into the warranty.
I priced the 06 today and they are alot more expensive with less options than this 05 has.Allthough I do agree if money was no hurdle then get the 06 definetely.
Can someone tell me if 38,000 is a good price for this 05 or can new 05's still be found at dealerships for that price with those options?I have to admit the options are what is making this 05 unique and tasteful;in my opinion.I know my kids would enjoy the dvd player and I'd like the sunroof and xm.Plus its still a duramax/allison comboI don't mind buying the 05 as long as they are generally reliable for that year and the 38,000 is a under priced and essentially a bargain but maybe its not a real good price.I just don't wanna pay more than its really valued at.
Judge not 05-13-2006, 05:02 PM I paid 38,000 for my 05 last August. That was with Gms and a rebate, my truck has fewer options than yours. I think you are getting a good price.
swatkins 05-13-2006, 05:41 PM I must have gotten a real good deal! I paid 36.500.00 last year for my 05 LT cc dually...
Personaly I would go for the 06... Unless your going to keep it for a long time the 06 will have more trade in value when it comes time for a new one...
I also like the better cooling and the 6 speed!
Why does buying a truck have to be sooooo hard :)
Bluestreak720 05-13-2006, 08:12 PM I paid 34,579 in 7/05 less TTL. $44381 list price. Not a 4 X 4 and no DVD. Otherwise I believe same options. Doesn't sound bad to me for a 2006 but I don't know about a 2005.No idea how much 4 x 4 adds to cost. No complaints on the 2005 except fuel mileage if you can't drive slow. (60 mph).
This was my 1st diesel so nothing to compare to personaly.
SLT223 05-13-2006, 09:07 PM Although I LOVE my truck, If I were in your position, I'd buy the 2006.
Ditto this.
ken7728 05-13-2006, 09:26 PM We paid $36500 for our 2005 Chevy Ec 4x4 D/A which listed for $46175 last August 22. It was pretty well equiped with 2 junk options: a dealer installed storage box under the rear seat @ $290 and the dealer installed chrome nerf bars @$450. I llike both options but I would have put nerf bars on for $200 and I woulld have done without the rear storage box before I would have spent $290 for one.
Dr_goodwrench66 05-13-2006, 09:43 PM I love my LLY and LBZ. But I can say that my LLY has had ZERO problems and my LBZ has had a few...like the SES light that has been on since 3K!! No fix yet (PO381) from the General...Very irritating! You can't go wrong with either one. Just my .02...
Oh, and my LLY does not overheat!!
ChevyWolf 05-14-2006, 12:58 AM All I can say is I LOVE my 05 LLY. I bought it in August 1st 2005. Stickered for 41,800 I got it for 32,000(GM's employee discount thing)
I have a little over 17,000 miles and would by another in a heart beat!! The only problems I had were a squeeky belt on cold starts(shimmed out the pwr. steering pump.) and reprogramed the ECU to fix the "parking lot" surge. Absolutly no other problems so far. MY avg. MPG on my daily driving mid to low 19's.
The price the dealer's quoting you seems pretty fair for the options it has.
IMO, The LLY is a great motor.
1tonchev 05-14-2006, 11:15 AM I just traded in my 04 GMC 6.0 gas for an 05 GMC Duramax CC. The only option this truck does not have is the sunroof, which I would not ever get anyway. The Duramax had 11,000 miles on it, and I picked it up for 35,999. I found the MSRP sticker in the glove box, and this truck stickered for 50,000 in 05. Around here, the chevy's are cheaper priced than the GMC.
jaybird 05-14-2006, 02:57 PM Thanks guys for the feeback...
I'll let ya'll know what I decided on this week..:grd:
jaybird 05-15-2006, 09:33 PM Well after long consideration of the 2005,I decided not to buy it.That's a good thing for me because the dealership is selling me a crew cab 2006 lbz duramax for 302.00 more;that's right 300 dollars more.
Its color is birch it has XM radio,no sunroof,no onstar.
It does have step rails,4x4,heated trailering mirrors, alloy wheels, skid plate pkg, plow pkg,tow pkg,and of course it has the new 6 speed allison(smiles)and the eaton locking diff, painted matched wheel flares, cloth.
I guess it pays to say no to a dealership on one 2005 after they have spent hours on your deal and trade in in my case they gave me the better looking 06 deal end the end with a new 650ft lbs 06+6speed allison.
Oh and it has the front bench cloth seat not the buckets;I like the idea of bench moreso for my uses and needs, see I have 4 kids and a wife to boot.
Anyway I'd like to applaud all here that commented the goods and bads of my head scratching descision...
Once again thanks for everyones guidance, experience and friendly and helpful responses.
Cheers,
JAYBIRD:ro)
RickDLance 05-15-2006, 09:44 PM Enjoy the new ride!:)
Good call on not buying the 05, they wanted too much for it. I gave 4700 under invoice for a new 05 4X4 Ext cab Buckets LLY Silverado LS. 33,000 out the door on a 43,000 truck no money down 2 months ago. I know it's not the same truck, but 38,000 sounds too high for a year old new truck.
Good on ya, Congrats
