: H2 Wheel Mod and Install
In order to install GM H2 wheels on a Dodge 3rd Gen truck, the center hole must be opened up accurately to 121.5mm or 4.774" diameter.
The stock Dodge rims and the GM H2 rims are "hubcentric" meaning the rims are held on center on the spindle/hub by the center hole, not the lug nuts. There is only .007 diameter or .0035" per side clearance between the wheel and the spindle protrusion.
About 1/8" per side or 1/4" diameter needs to me machined out, accurately. It can be done, tires off on a lathe, or as I have done, on a milling machine buy either manually boring or using an end mill and cutting a circle with a programmable milling machine (CNC).
I set the wheel/tires up by simply clamping directly on the tire. There is no need to be concerned about flatness as the thickness being machined is only about .8 thick. Not enough to effect perpendicularity.
The hole must be indicated (center located) to within a few thousanths.
I wrote a short program with cutter compensation to mill the circle. That way we could sneak in to the final dia.

Mackin 04-22-2004, 10:24 PM Looks good HOOt .... Tell that guy get his finger out of his nose ...
Gotta mod some center caps ??
Mac
I just added that last pic with the Hummer caps on. They look good. I'm coming up with an idea to use heat to bulb out the caps so they fit over the hub in the back.
That guy doesn't run the machine. He stopped by to pose.Edited by: hoot
Canadian_Frank 04-22-2004, 11:08 PM Congratulation Hoot!
Nice Truck. A man with taste and talents. Enjoy your enhanced rig.
Look forward to your future Mods/posts.
Max Power 04-22-2004, 11:11 PM Hoot I thought you had chromed h2 rims? I think that would look a bit better. Can you make those dodge center caps work like on that blue truck you posted the other day? I think that would look good.
Don't get me wrong it looks really good as it is!

Max, I'm debating still too. The chrome ones I had pitted so bad I let them go when I traded it. No more chrome plated aluminum unless a manufacturer warrantees them.
I can make either caps fit. They both look good.
Max Power 04-22-2004, 11:54 PM Go Chrome, it will look really good!
Go Chrome, it will look really good!
Send money http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif
I got that whole set for $460 (with tires, mounted and balanced, local, no shipping)
A set of chrome rims alone are like $600 before shipping and they're shot by next year. Then i would have to buy tires and get them mounted and balanced. We talking like $1300-$1400...
It would cost me $1000 to make them shinyEdited by: hoot
Max Power 04-23-2004, 12:15 AM You got a deal. I'll send you money to do your wheels.
You send me money to do give my ally that suncoast treatment. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif
Max Power 04-23-2004, 12:16 AM Maybe that guy who is picking his nose found gold! http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif
Fixed up the Dodge caps so they would fit.
Removed .9" ring from the bottom...

Bertram65 04-23-2004, 08:54 PM How did you trim those center caps? Looks like it could tricky to keep it straight.

I did it in a machine shop. Put a slitting saw in a Bridgeport milling machine. Put high sided jaws in the vise and set a stop up on one side. Masking tape on all contact surfaces to minimize scratching. Tightened the vise just enough to contain the cap. Set the slitting saw height to a scribed line and fed it into the cap sideways while holding it. As it started cutting I rotated the cap by hand. A little dangerous but if you understand machining concepts it's really not.
Another way to do it is on a lathe but holding it in the chuck is tricky.
One guy on DTR said he did it with a slitting saw on a die grinder, by hand. Takes a little ingenuity to get a professional job.Edited by: hoot
DGFoster 04-24-2004, 12:35 AM Hoot, what are you going to do with the old tires and rims???
Hoot, what are you going to do with the old tires and rims???
I like to hang on to them in case the dealer needs me to put then back on.
I have a set of GM HD PYO's in the basement waiting for someone to ask. Gotta unload them.
Talked to a guy about cutting the caps.
He clamped a 18V skill saw to the side of a table with the blade parallel to the table at the correct height.
Then he spun the cap up against the blade. I wouldn't go all the way through. Enough so you can snap it off.
Finished Product...

Great looking truck. Those wheals sure make the entire truck look more impressive.
I see the tires stick out more outside the wheal well. I started getting a lot of stones hitting the side of the truck even with mud flaps. Are you considering fender wells?
Bertram65 04-24-2004, 04:09 PM Looks good, I think I will try to modify my center caps on my table saw, I have a finish blade and I can set the depth and width, then just spin the cap. I have the Hummer caps on now, I cut a 4.75" hole in the center for the ones on the back, they look alright for now. I am impressed how nice they ride, nothing like factory match balancing.
Wickedsprint 04-24-2004, 10:24 PM That looks really odd, I kinda like the dodge wheels a bit better, but needing taller tires, never been a fan of 315's I kinda like the tall cookie cutter tire look on my trucks.
I had cookie cutters on my Dmax a long time ago. 255's. Too skinny for me. I like the beefy look. Skinny is practical but I'm not.
As far as looks.. subjective. I like them. I don't like the Dodge wheels at all. Moving on to exhaust.
DGFoster 04-24-2004, 11:17 PM I got the cookie cutter tire 245/70 and with a 4:10 evenhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif
I will post a pick as soon as I figure it out:)
Bertram65 04-25-2004, 06:01 PM Modded the center caps with the table saw, worked great. Now the wheels look real nice, thanks for the info on how much to cut off and the picture of how to modify the lug clip.
Patriot_RAM 07-07-2004, 04:32 PM Hey hoot,
Were you able to use the factory dodge lug nuts for these wheels?
Hey hoot,
Were you able to use the factory dodge lug nuts for these wheels?
Yes
Po' riggity 07-09-2004, 12:45 AM Lookin sweet with the dodge caps... I love 315's on these trucks.. Can't wait to get a set on mine.

MABurns 07-09-2004, 09:04 AM "Not enough to effect perpendicularity"
Is that a real word.........
cobra13 07-09-2004, 09:08 AM hey hoot when you did the lift did they say that those ( polyurathanes) would hold up????? I had those in my 02 and one side shattered one day pulling my gooseneck down the interstate. On my 03 I bought steel ones no problems so far but only 8000 miles on them.
"Not enough to effect perpendicularity"
Is that a real word.........
Yes it is. Means 90 degrees..... or "normal"
Patriot_RAM 07-09-2004, 05:04 PM Hey,
The local 4x4 shop said these spacers would make alignments difficult. Have any of you running these had to do any alignments? How'd it go?
Patriot_RAM 07-09-2004, 05:09 PM I meant to mention -- I like these wheels and tires so much that I went and found a set in Oklahoma City. They're in the machine shop now getting cut. They were supposed to have them done this evening but it looks like I have to wait until tomorrow. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Disapprove.gif
Can't wait to get these on! I put my intake on Wednesday and I'm about to order exhaust. Next it's time for gauges, Edge, the DD3's, turbo, clutch, and fuel pump. fun fun.... Just need to come up with some funds! :o)
Patriot_RAM 07-09-2004, 05:14 PM I've been waiting for the call from the machine shop all week. "Umm, we have a problem....."
You know, it's just the kind of luck I have!! :o) Hopefully all will go well.
No alignment problems. It's not enough of a change.
cobra13 07-10-2004, 08:28 AM I had no alignment changes....put it on the machine it was withing factory specs still with the lift and 315's
Patriot_RAM 12-08-2004, 04:12 PM Hard to believe how many people are doing this mod. :)
wsucowboy 12-08-2004, 04:37 PM anyone know if they will fit a 2nd gen dodge? I assume that the same procedure would have to be done right? thanks -Jeff

Yes I believe they do but you still need to openup the center holes.
