My wife likes her horoscopes (spelling) and she said that I was going to have a 5 star day. Go figure.
I am not sure of the type or name of the this trailer connection. It is the type that has a clam shell that goes over the cup that surrounds the ball and the latch lever is either pushed forward to lock or pulled back to release.
I rented a 5X8 enclosed trailer from an RV dealer. The trailer was hooked up by a one of the employees and I did not double check him. I also did not have a pin for the latch.
I got about 4 miles down the road and went over a frost heave (spelling) and the trailer came loose. Luckily the chains were on. I pulled over in a turn lane and the trailer was lodged under the rear of the truck. I got it out fairly easily and secured back on the truck. The coupling appeard to be loose when latched. I have heard of issues about these types of couplings doing this. Is this type of coupling common to these types of problems?
The damage was a busted back up light and the metal bracket for the 7 pin wire harness was ripped off on one side.
I told them to get a quote for the repairs and put it towards a Class V Draw-Tite hitch (I was told that Draw-Tite bought out Reese /Titan and now they call it the Tow Beast), and I would cover the remainder. They also told me that the factory hitches are not rated for what the trucks them selves are quoted at. They are also replaceing the lights.
