My wife likes her horoscopes (spelling) and she said that I was going to have a 5 star day. Go figure.

I am not sure of the type or name of the this trailer connection. It is the type that has a clam shell that goes over the cup that surrounds the ball and the latch lever is either pushed forward to lock or pulled back to release.

I rented a 5X8 enclosed trailer from an RV dealer. The trailer was hooked up by a one of the employees and I did not double check him. I also did not have a pin for the latch.

I got about 4 miles down the road and went over a frost heave (spelling) and the trailer came loose. Luckily the chains were on. I pulled over in a turn lane and the trailer was lodged under the rear of the truck. I got it out fairly easily and secured back on the truck. The coupling appeard to be loose when latched. I have heard of issues about these types of couplings doing this. Is this type of coupling common to these types of problems?

The damage was a busted back up light and the metal bracket for the 7 pin wire harness was ripped off on one side.

I told them to get a quote for the repairs and put it towards a Class V Draw-Tite hitch (I was told that Draw-Tite bought out Reese /Titan and now they call it the Tow Beast), and I would cover the remainder. They also told me that the factory hitches are not rated for what the trucks them selves are quoted at. They are also replaceing the lights.

That is a Bulldog coupler you are refering to. Also on the hitch note Cequent Towing products bought Draw-Tite, Reese(which were already sister companys), Hidden Hitch, Tokensha, Fulton, and about six others.

Thanks for the correction. I was told Draw-tite bought out Reese.

Common problem easy solution. Once the coupler clam shell is pushed together the sleeve should be pushed up on it as far as it will go. A tap or two with a hammer will seat it solid. If it is a newer hitch there will be a hole cross drilled just behind the sleeve. If not drill one. Then go to a Case IH or John Deere dealer and get a clip pin to go through it. Case uses it to lock the header latch on there combines. Then most importantly....Use it. On the trailers with the type of hitch you set on and just push the latch forward until it fall into the detent there should also be a hole that will keep it from coming out until the pin is removed. Once again. Get a pin like the one above.....and use it. No hitch should come undone unless you want it to.
