I'm referring to the black plastic top portion of the bumper, right below the grille. I figured since GM offered so many different accessories, that they might offer this. If not, I guess I'll just have to get it painted. Thanks.

As I understand it the color matched is only an option on the 1500. So, looks like you'll have to get it painted. You can sand it smooth, leave it textured or, I believe you can buy a smooth, ABS one to replace the factory one and then have it painted. Good luck!

Is the 1500 and 2500HD top bumper cap the same? I would think so. If GM offers a smooth one, I don't see why they wouldn't offer a paint matched. If GM does offer a smooth paint matched bumper cap for the 1500 and it fits the 2500HD, then I might consider doing that, otherwise I guess I'll just have mine smoothed out and painted.

IIRC from a previous thread, the same question was asked a month or two ago. Also, IIRC, the member that responded stated that they were, in fact, different. To what extent I have no idea. I'd say "only your dealer would know", but I know better than that. I found these interesting, somewhat related threads...

In my research, I found the bumper cap is what GM used to help hide the 2" body lift on our trucks. The HD's have a taller cap. The chrome part is exactly the same.

Theoretically, you might be able to put a 1500 bumper cap on your HD chrome bumper, and using some 2 inch spacers and longer bolts, fit it on an HD. You'd probably have to bend the lower bar mounts up slightly.

I did some searching and found that the chrome bumper is the same for both 1500 and 2500 hd trucks. The black cap is 2 inches taller to fill in the gap from the taller frame. GMC does the same thing except they put that black spacer in between the grille and the bumper. The reason i found this was becuz i found a company that sells chrome bumper caps and they told me that it'll only fit the 1500 and they were working on getting one made for the HD's. That's that in a nutshell.

Well, they're not talking about my truck! I have heard of the plastic (yuk!) bedrail caps shrinking though.

Does GM offer a smooth version for the 2500HD that I could have painted? If not, then I'll just have mine smoothed a painted.

I talked to a reputable painter the other day about getting my bumper cap painted and he didn't seem too interested in doing it as he suggested I'd be better off (cheaper) going through GM as they offer them painted already. I told him that was only for 1500 models, but said I should double check. I didn't check, but if he wanted to make so money, then he would do it. Anyhow, he said it was a lot of work and probably wouldn't be cheap, which is why he suggested I'd be better of going through the dealer.

mad, did you do yours yourself? If so, what was required and would you consider it a lot of work? If not, how much did you pay?

You're gonna cry when I tell you...
I had mine painted by a paint shop I get along with extremely well with. First, you can sand it smooth (almost wish I had) or leave it factory; which I did) I took the pieces in and they were scotch brighted (scotch bright pad to rough it up), cleaned with wax/silicone remover (thinner), then colored and cleared. The shop used an appropriate amount of "flex agent" in the paint and they have been trouble free. No chips, scratches, flakes, nothing...despite a routine dose of Florida bugs. I wax them like anything else. Same shop also did my mirrors. As for the bumper caps, I think I paid...hold your breath...$50 cash.
No issues...no regreat...extremely pleased.

Listen to MAX,he's absolutely correct. You have to wet sand the existing cap. If you don't sand it smooth it won't be glossy. I'm in the process of doing one now. GM definitely does not make a smooth one for the HD. The parts dept ordered one & painted for me saying it would work-2" to short-:(

mad stated that he didn't sand his, he merely roughed it up with some scotch bright.

mad, do you have any CLOSE UPs of your bumper? Did it come out smooth or does it still have some texture to it?

mad

Still has factory texture. I'd classify my truck as "glossy" and the bumper caps as "satin finish".

That would actually be a nice contrast. The silver looks good with a painted cap.
