: Broken tie rod Part II
2MuchFun 04-22-2004, 12:47 AM My local dealer, whom I have patronized with 3 truck purchases, just told me that they wont cover my broken tie rod under warranty because, as they say "We've never seen one break like that and its obviously road hazard damage". They say I MUST have hit something with one of the wheels which forced the wheel to turn breaking the tie rod!
I told them the truth! I was in 4 Low on dry pavement!
Tomorrow, it's ON with the Service Mgr. http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif
I even went down to the frickin' place to talk to them about it before I had the truck towed in. I spoke to the Fleet dude that sold me the truck -nice guy-, he said Nooo Problem, see Mr. *** in service....
They want $280 to repair and realign. I said dont touch my truck, I'll pick it up in the AM. #$%#@$%% Bastards!
~~~~~Sorry guys, but in the back of my mind I keep thinking a Ford or even Dodge would not have broken like this. I know this is a good truck and I truely love it, but Its the ol' weakest link 'what got me :(
Diesel Power 04-22-2004, 03:14 AM what were you doing in 4LO on the pavement?
dmaxalliTech 04-22-2004, 10:04 AM The tie rod is only about a 40$ part. Labor to install it should be no more then 1.0 hours and an alignment is about 60 bucks.
that's 180ish in my book for that job
2MuchFun 04-22-2004, 11:17 AM DP, I know, I know... now ~it was a rookie 4X move. BUT, the manual doesn't say not to be in 4 low on dry pavement so...
dmaxalliTech, Thats right about what I was thinking (Actually $170 was my number). The service writer says he will talk to his boss this morning and see what they can do for me... If he comes back $100 less, I'll give them my business. If not, I'll go through the trouble of having it towed back home and putting on a rod myself just for principal!
Diesel Power 04-22-2004, 11:39 AM did you launch it hard in 4wd? or what? trying to figure out how exactly it broke..
Nick
McRat 04-22-2004, 12:46 PM Tell them to show the evidence that you hit something, or fix it under warranty. Make them put the refusal in writing.
Max Power 04-22-2004, 12:52 PM Yep, stick to your guns and have it repaired under warranty. No way I would put up with that crap.
3500dmax 04-22-2004, 01:01 PM DP,* I know, I know... now* ~it was a rookie 4X move.* BUT, the manual doesn't say not to be in 4 low on dry pavement so...
My 4x4 manual does but no matter what it should be covered under warranty. If they think tie-rods don't break do a search on this forum, print out the picture and show they others have had this problem and it's not an isolated incident.
2MuchFun 04-22-2004, 03:12 PM DP, I was pulling a tree root out http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif
I didnt launch hard at all, it all happened within 2-3 MPH.
rickles04 04-22-2004, 04:27 PM WEELLLLLLLLLLLLL I WAS JUST PULLING TREE ROOTS OUT IN 4 LOW ALSO FOR THE LAST 2 DAYS AND MINE DIDNT BREAK SO IT SOUNDS LIKE TO ME ITS A WARRANTY CLAIM !!!! AND WHO CARES IF YOUR IN 4 LOW ON PAVEMENT ITS A HEAVY DUTY TRUCK AND ITS MADE TO WORK
2MuchFun 04-22-2004, 05:09 PM Lol! Thanks for the support http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
As it turns out, The service writer talked to the service manager who talked to the GM Area rep. who said to cover it under warranty http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif
I didnt even have to argue! But if I hadnt told them I didnt want them to do the work and would pick up my truck, I would have shelled out $280 when I didnt have to!
Diesel Power 04-22-2004, 06:59 PM I'm glad they covered it.. i was never saying it shouldn't be.. just trying to figure out how hard you worked it to break it.. sounds like you didn't work it hard at all!!!
2MuchFun 04-22-2004, 07:08 PM Ya I was very surprised as was everyone else there.....including my 'dodge' neighbor on the left and 'ford' neighbor across the streethttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Disapprove.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif
It was embarassing for sure. Know how many times I had to hear "Like a rock" ? ...If I hear it again, someones eating a F#$%ing rock! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif
mannytranny 04-22-2004, 07:20 PM HD my ass...
The fird and dodge guys do have a point about the front ends being weak.
I just hope it dosent happen to me out in the sticks somewhere...
2MuchFun 04-23-2004, 02:00 AM I just hope it dosent happen to me out in the sticks somewhere...
Exactly! Thats why Im getting the SS sleves.
I could just see me and the whole family pulling the toybox deep in some canyon and breaking a tierod. I might be compelled to burn the truck! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Dead.gif
Realistically though, For 95% of the time, they will be fine, but I dread that 5% at the worst possible time.
Micheal Tomac 04-23-2004, 10:56 AM I guess it's a good idea to lower the torsen bars when dragracing, truckpulling and pulling out trees/roots
Diesels Forever 04-23-2004, 05:11 PM Same exact thing happened to my friend's tierod end. Except his quote from the dealer was $380 and after we screamed and yelled for a day they said they would do it for $250 "cost" they said. He demanded warranty, 5,000 mi. on truck, they said no here is reps # call them. He did, no luck. GM rep said no way, dealer says "you obviously hit something". He coughed up the $250.
He was sooooo mad he went and traded his truck in on a new Dodge Cummins. This all happened 4 months ago, tommorow we are taking his Dodge down to trade it of on a 04 GMC with the LB7. He said his Dodge was the biggest mistake he'd made in awhile. He always laughs and says "Dodge is different, that's for sure!".
Glad to hear you got yours fixed free. I'm getting sleeves for both my trucks. I'm pretty sure he'll order a set for his new ride too.
