: Remove your top end speed limiter 01,02,03
Max Power 04-21-2004, 11:28 PM The information in this post is for information purposes only. I hold no responsibility for any damage to your vehicle, yourself or others. Do not attempt this on vehicles that do not have the proper speed rated tires.
I figured out how to remove the top end speed limiter on all 01,02, and 03's with the Allison. It is a very easy mod and can be done in less then 30 minutes. It is also cheap $0-$10. Unfortunately it has side effects.
The side effects are:
1) No speedo however your Attitude will still read your speed!
2) Service Brake system warning will turn on. This inclues 'service brake system' on the DIC as well as the park brake light and ABS light will be illuminated. You will also hear a very loud chime for about 30 seconds.
3) You will have no ABS Brakes.
4) There will be a code stored
5) You will have no cruise control
6) You may get a speeding ticket.
What you need to do is remove the 2 bolts holding the TCM in place. The bottom plug is the plug we need to work with. Unplug it from the TCM. In Pin position 27 you will see a yellow wire. You have 3 choices.
1) You can either remove that wire from the TCM altogether. This will remove your speed limiter until you put the wire back in position. This will also come with all the side effects above until you plug it back in.
2) You can cut the wire and splice in 2 wires, run them into the cab and hook those 2 wires to a switch. This will allow you to turn it on and off as you choose. The only problem with this is you will have a cut wire to deal with later on.
3) You can get a pin from your GM dealer as it is the same pin as used for the high idle. Remove the yellow wire and find a way to afix a wire to that pin once it is removed. Then put your new pin and wire into the hole that you removed the yellow one. Run both wires into the cab and hook up a switch same as above.
Thats it! The transmission seems to shift normally. You can take it right up to red line in 5th gear. Your attitude will display the proper speed so you know how fast you are going. If you run switch into the cab you can easily turn it on or off as you need it. Once you turn it back on you will have full funtion of everything as normal.
There might be some other side effects as I only tested it for a few miles Use at your own risk. I am not responsibe for any damages.
I had my truck up to 110 mph but I had to back off because there was too much traffic ahead.
I haven't tested this on an 01 but the schematic is the same and it should have the same effect.
I will post some pics in another post,
Enjoy!

Wickedsprint 04-21-2004, 11:48 PM Um..I guess that's good information...but my stealth does the same thing without hacking wires..LOL
Max Power 04-21-2004, 11:51 PM Wickedsprint, I do realise that. Some people would like to run a 1/4 mile without have to buy a tuner.
The main reason I did this is because 01 owners have very limited options to remove their speed limiter. I believe the only other choices are the TTS and Westers PCM's. Big $$$$$$$$. This is crude, but it works and its free!
I bet peanut will be happy to see this info.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gifEdited by: Max Power
easymon4u 04-22-2004, 12:07 AM Max Power...you have to give this some kind of a name... and your right, Alot of 01 owners would like this simple cost effective mod, for 1/4 runs. Can I call it The Max Power Mod? Edited by: easymon4u
skidsteerloader 04-22-2004, 12:11 AM Can the speed limiter be removed or raised with a tech 2??
Max Power 04-22-2004, 12:13 AM Here is the schematic for anyone who is interested what is going on here. You are cutting the yellow wire that goes between the TCM and the PCM.

Max Power 04-22-2004, 12:22 AM easymon4u are you going to try it? I would love to hear that it works on an 01. I am quite confident that it will.
I will do some more research and testing on this. I am sure there is a way to get rid of all the side effects and still remove or raise the speed limiter. Perhaps maybe a simple pulse converter that kicks in above 90 mph. I'll have to do some more work.Edited by: Max Power

redneck45 04-22-2004, 08:04 AM This could probably be done with the odometer if you wanted to keep the shown miles off your truck, prob. with the same type side effects. Course that would be illegal and I would not sponser such activity.

Just so you know, BD's ASSC (Allison Shift Strategy) will be around $500
Hacksaw 04-22-2004, 12:21 PM If that is the case, I would rather have the Predator and be able to read and reset codes for less $$$
easymon4u 04-22-2004, 12:30 PM I am going to test The "MAX POWER TOP SPEED MOD" this weekend at the track. Will let you know how it works out.
Joe E 04-22-2004, 12:33 PM MaxPower - NICEhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif I'll be doing this before I head to the track (after easymon4u verifies), bu that won't be until I do the tranny. Thanks for unearthing this!
Camstyn 04-22-2004, 12:34 PM On my '03 the speedometer stops functioning by simply pulling the red wire under the dash. Take the plastic cover off of the panel tucked in behind your e-brake pedal. This one:
http://www.duramaximizer.com/images/install_27.jpg
Ignore the "Shown Attached" and arrow, that's regarding installation of the duramaximizer. There will be a single red wire plugged into that panel somewhere. Mine is near the top in the middle.
Can be done in 3 minutes and plugged back in just as easily. I found this out by accident.
My truck drove fine with the wire unplugged, I don't know what effects it will have on the allison.

Dave Ski 04-22-2004, 01:09 PM Thanks for the info, Max. As an unhappy owner of an 01 with limitations, this is good news. I only got one question. Reading your entire description, I would opt for installing a switch in the cab to turn the thing off every now and then, like when chasing down a punk in a rice burner! What happens when you turn it back on while driving, does it just go back to normal or do I need to shut down and restart to reset everything?
Also, since you didn't mention it, I'll assume there is no SES light associated with this mod...
Thanks again!

I didn't try it although I would assume everything would go back to normal. The abs light might stay on but the speedo and cruise will definately come back.
No SES light on my truck!
Max Power 04-23-2004, 10:00 AM Has anyone tried this on an 01 yet?
easymon4u 04-24-2004, 11:10 PM I was going to test this mod this weekend, something else came up and as result I was not able to test. I also have an appointment set for the 27th with dealer, as I am getting close to the end of 3yr, 36,000 mi I have 30,967 at time of post. Yeah, thats right an 01 with less than 31,000 mi. I am pulling juice and getting her ready for TCM/ECM flash monday am.

easymon4u 04-30-2004, 12:05 AM Max Power,
I have tested your "MAX POWER TOP SPEED MOD" on my 01, Yes Sir it works just as you describe. I get the ABS light, and The Brake light, and no Speedo. I plan on heading out to the track to get an accurate Top Speed, but it felt like it was still pulling above the Attitude Preformance 1/4 mi test. I did clock in with the Attitude at 14.00 @ 99mph. But that is not as accurate as the track time. I have found that to be off approx -.500 sec, and - 1-2 mph. I will post the slips when I do go and pull a few runs. Thanks so much, for the easy mod, till one of the Big Guns comes through with an better way.
Max Power 04-30-2004, 12:24 AM http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif I'm glad it worked. I might come up with a better solution too. I think it can be done properly for very little cost.
