: theres a bird in my engine
DURAtotheMAX 05-07-2006, 11:17 PM Sometimes at idle, I have a faint chirping, like a bird going "tweet-tweet-tweet". Its not obnoxiously loud like belt squeak, and you cant really hear it unless you're standing next to the truck outside. It goes away the second you tap the accellerator. Its probably the belt...but could it be something more important like a bearing in one of the belt driven accessories? Its just barely loud enough to be annoying. Is it "safe" to take the serp belt off and run it for a couple seconds to see if it goes away?
partsguy662 05-07-2006, 11:19 PM Yep..take the belt off Ben..The water pump is gear driven
DURAtotheMAX 05-07-2006, 11:35 PM maybe its cause one of my pulley's is square?
Remember Scott, im in 7th grade cause I not only failed "colors" but I also failed "shapes" ):h
RickDLance 05-07-2006, 11:42 PM Check for an exhaust leak. Possibly near the egr blocker plate location.:)
Pure Diesel 05-07-2006, 11:46 PM Hello Ben, you've been through a tranny build and etc. Its the serpentine tensioner. Mine used to do it every morning(when cold) now since its warm it doesn't do it any more. Unless the 2nd set of injectors(that just got replaced)has anything to do with it.

EGR? huh?
the blocker plate is 1/4" steel, welded onto the exhaust riser :D
Ill check for exhaust leaks tho, and take off the serp belt when it starts doing it again. That tensioner has got to be fun to replace.

I thought it was tranmission lifting :D

briano 05-08-2006, 12:40 AM Its the serpentine tensioner.
I've had this same noise and solution on 3 GM trucks to date.
DURAtotheMAX 05-08-2006, 12:52 AM how hard is it to replace? I really dont want to take it to the dealer unless I have to, god forbid they see my new spinny thing on the engine
Flashscan 05-08-2006, 01:21 AM I don't know how similar the LS1 & Dmax serpentine and accessory items are, but common tweety noises on the LS1 is a mis-aligned power steering pump pulley. It makes the belt squeal real bad when cold.
Cheers,
Ross
I read this post kind of late, but it sounds like an AC compressor engaging to me.
On this truck, I have found that the compressor runs even when the AC button is off, recirc is selected, and normal "to the face" vent selection is engaged. I use it all the time as a kind of "econo" AC setting. Not quite as cold as the real AC, but does the trick on warm days.
DURAtotheMAX 05-24-2006, 11:48 AM It was the exhaust rattling :)
all fixed now.
nassdmax 05-25-2006, 07:33 PM Probably somthin to do with the cloud of soot under the hood??? ):h
where's the pics of your fix. It may come in handy for some...
DURAtotheMAX 05-25-2006, 07:36 PM Ill see if I got any pics of it...my camera was dieing at that point...a gig of pics had taken its toll on the battery.
basically Eric cut off the EGR riser/manifold and welded a plate in place (Im no good at welding thin stuff)
now for cleaning up my whole sooty dirty engine compartment!!
