I am looking at buying a set of new tires for my truck (Toyo Open Country M/T's). I want the biggest tire I can put on there. I have read that 265's will fit fine and that I will have to turn the torsion bars a few times to fit 285's. I have a couple questions about the 285's.
How many turns will I have to do to fit 285's?
Will they fit ok on my stock rims?
How will this affect my ride quality?
Thanks

5-9 turns will usually bring the truck to level (front/rear fender lips the same height from the ground).
With 285's, my fender lips are about 40-41"
Will they fit ok on my stock rims?
Yes and no... a LOT of guys run them, and even 305's, but they are out of spec. If you do any heavy hauling or towing, you absolutely want them on an 8" or wider rim.
I put them on the stockers, and after 100 miles or so, the tire looked like a motorcycle tire with the "chicken strip" of completely unworn tread at the edges... I went from a 245 to a 285, and probably dropped to a 225mm contact patch.
I went to 16x8 wheels later that week.
How will this affect my ride quality?
I can't say that I noticed a difference, but I didn't max out my bars either. Up to about 1.5-2" if lift you should be okay. Any more and poor ride will be the least of your problems down the road.

AGREED!! BUT I went to 16x8 in, wheels, more contact on ground, plus better ride with 285s

Did you have to have the alignment adjusted after turning up the bars?

Yes you will need to after getting your bars turned.

You can run 285's on stock rims with very little trouble. It maybe a little wide fot the rim, but it's ok. Just don't air them up to the specs on the door jam. That will cause the tire to swell out, and most like cuase the narrow contact path stated above.

5 turns on mine and minimal trimming

You should.
That said, I did not, and after 25k, all four tires are wearing within 1/32 of each other and level across their faces, perhaps a touch more wear on the inner and outer edges (indicating that I could go up another 5psi, but I'm already running @ 60).
