Maybe you guys can help me. I have a 2001 2500HD. Just yesterday I put down the drivers window (power) and heard some "crunching" noises. Not loud or really bad sounding, but crunch, crunch.... The window went back up... though slowly. Being stupid I tried again to see if something was simply stuck, or a bit off track. Same result, but now it went up slower. This is while I was driving. So when I got home I tried again... this time it would not go back up. After a few minutes of up-down-up-down-up-down, while pulling up on the window I got it up.

So obviously something is broke. Has anyone else had this happen? This is the first time I've had power windows so I'm not sure what to expect. With the truck off and headlights on, they didn't dim while trying to go up, so it doesn't seem that the motor is drawing excess current. Maybe just a gear got mangled?

Too bad I don't have a few extra $$ laying around. Since I have to take the door panel off it might have been nice to throw in some new front speakers.

If anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears. For now I'm going to see if that damn SI-2000 disk set from ebay does me any good. I haven't had much luck with it in the past.

thanks

Jim

I think that the riser gear might have broken, it is just cheap plastic. Also with the window going up slowly the motor might have just been under strain from the gear giving out. I would replace the gear and then see what happens. May have to replave the motor as well. Hope not, those are not cheap. Good luck.

I have seen a large amount of these with the bolts that hold the regulater to the door come loose. I suppose if one come out it could cause a bind and a slow raise. I would check that first, thats the easiest thing to do. I am not sure how servicable the regulator is. Prolly can be fixed, but the general dont offer parts for them, just replacement assemblies.

And dont worry about installing new speakers, those panels come off easy enough, its not a big deal at all

These regulators have a couple of wimpy cables that actually move the window. The strands of cable have rusted, broken and bound up and you get to buy a new 200 plus $ regulator. Sorry dude. I know of at least 10 of these that have failed just in my circle of friends. I think its only a problem in the salt belt or near oceans . There are places that rebuild them with S.S. cables for way less than new. Search the web and you will find them.

MY 02 W/26000 MILES DRIVER WINDOW WOULD BE GOING UP AND JUST STOP ,KEEP PUSHING WINDOW BUTTON AND IT WOULD GO UP. GENERAL SAID MOTOR WAS SHORTING REPLACED WHOLE REG/MOTOR ASSEMBLY UNDER WARRANTY. AMAZING HOW MUCH SMOOTHER IT RUNS NOW. I HAVE A 94 GMC DUALLY CC K3500 W/139000 AND ALL THE WINDOWS STILL WORK!!!

I won't get a chance to look at until the week end, I hope. I noticed in a few posts, and on the GM cd's this thing called a "regulator". OK I give, whats that? I'm use to regulators in electronics that reduce/increase voltages for systems (Normally called power or voltage regulators). This sound like some kinda mechanical thing. I thought it would simply be a motor and a gear.

I'll start checking the web to see if I can find a replacement now... just in case.

Thanks

The regulator is just what the designers and engineers call the window operating mechanism. There are two types, one is a motor attached to a gear and sicssor arms that move the window up/down, the other is a motor connected to a pulley that moves a cable which moves the window up/down.

You may want to check a junk yard if $$ is tight. There are probably some good ones in there from a crshed truck that would work. I do not know how a new one would be for you. They may not be very expensive because GM builds ~1.5 million GMT800s a year and 95% of them are electric windows.

Good luck.

Well someone said $200 bucks, so I'll belive thats what a dealer may charge. I found this place online:

http://www.1aauto.com/1A/WindowRegulators

They claim $99 with a "limited lifetime warrenty". This is for the motor and regulator. Sounds like a deal to me. I'll need to pull the door apart sooner I think so I can get a look at it. I'm sure shipping will take a few days. Best thing about this web site is that you can buy a Chinese made on for $20 less, but the mention that its for a "short term fix only". For $20 I can buy US!

Funny part is one of the webs sites I found claimed almost everyone has gone, or is going to this cable operated approach because of cost and ease of build. It will be interesting to see if Honda's start breaking windows on a regular basis.
