: Epic Battle: Manny vs The Winch
mannytranny 05-03-2006, 07:51 PM Sweet Holy Moses
This has taken me a long time.......
The goal was to add a hydraulic winch to the front of the tractor for the purpose of hauling an avocado filled wagon up the side of a long hill.....
I bought the 1/2 in thick plate (88 lbs @ .45/lb) but I didnt have a torch to cut it with.....nor did I know how to use a torch......
So I got a hold of a friend of mine that used to work as a welder for the Navy. He lent my his LP/oxy torch and gave me some instructions......now I need to buy a torch.......OK!
Anyway, here are the pics.....it was a really tight fit.....the loader support nearly touches the fairlead......got about an inch.......
We cut it, burned the four 3/4 inch mount holes with the torch, that was a time and drill bit saver!
He welded some, I welded some....7018 AC rod, EP, 120 amps DC......very nice!
Grinded it, cleaned it, primed it, painted it, mounted it......today.
It will definetly make picking avocados without Mexicans a lot easier!!!!
Here are the pics.......
He welded the filet welds, I did the butt welds. I ended up with some 7018 that had been left out for a few weeks....it pitted a bit, but not bad.

mannytranny 05-03-2006, 08:10 PM Thanks...!!!
I cannot wait to find a car parked somewhere I dont think it should be......:D
And the best part is that the hyd control valve, the hyd lines, the winch and the mount were all made in the USA.:ro)

Ya, it took a pretty long time to get it done......it seemed like no one was able to tell me how to properly hook up the hyd stuff.......the tractor is a bare bones model....no remotes. Couple that with my insufficient knowledge of hydraulics and ultra slow metal working skills and it took about 3 weeks.
I will definetly take pics of it in action......Ill be using it within a week.
partsguy662 05-03-2006, 08:52 PM Manny...you need to re-read how you were quoted...):h
mannytranny 05-03-2006, 09:20 PM What makes you think I didnt see it the first time? He is a sourpu$sy:eek: ......it dont matter.
I got your email a few days ago.......but I dont have the media player on this machine......Ill have to take a look see on my win machine.....
Puffer 05-03-2006, 09:32 PM Looks good manny .
Two questions are you using that rope and do you think it is heavey enough if you are.
mannytranny 05-03-2006, 09:39 PM Thanks.....ya, its synthetic line......rated for more than the winch.
I think Ill have to put a cover on the winch when its not in use, Ill bet that line needs to be kept out of the sun. Ill also have to be careful not to rub it on a rock or anthing.

DavesDmax 05-04-2006, 05:00 PM Manny, you're turning into an honest to God Farmer!
Good job!
farmdog 05-04-2006, 06:21 PM Hope you've got good brakes on that tractor. Hate to see ya go pulling the tractor down the hill instead of the avacodoes up the hill. Where are the winch controls located? Are you protected for flying cable if it would snap under load? Just thought I'd put the possibility of serious injury into your head. Looks good.
mannytranny 05-04-2006, 06:29 PM Oh ya, I cant see lifting more than 1k up the hill.....tractor will be in 4x4 in gear with the brakes on. I will have to have the loader up in the air though.......
I have no means for holding the cart back if the line breaks......Im just going to have to trust it....also frequent inspections should help.
Ill have to be real careful with everything.
The controls are mounted just in front of the loader control valve.....I thought it would be best of the operator would be in the seat of the tractor in the event of trouble. Ill also need to adjust the idle speed for more or less pulling speed/power.
DuckhunterInTN 05-04-2006, 06:30 PM If you have to pull the trailer up the hill from one tree to the next as you pick the fruit one of those wireless remotes would be nice. It would keep you from having to walk back and forth to the tractor. Not sure if they will work with a hydraulic winch, though.
mannytranny 05-04-2006, 06:36 PM Ya, that would be nice......I dont even think I saw it as an option with anything hydraulic.

It might work, as I think it is activated through the solenoid box, which I assume your winch has. I believe that either superwinch or ramsey makes the kit. I know their kit will work on warn winches, from what I have read.
