: Do I need air bags?

I have an 01, 2500HD, short box. I'm considering a slide-in camper that has a dry weight of 3100 pounds. The RV center tells me I should be fine with the stock suspension. I have a friend who used to have a Ford 2500 super duty. He said he had major problems with sway when cornering until he put in air bags. Someone out there must have gone through this already. What's the word? Do I need the bags for a slide in?

They will help but not add to your weight rating. Consider the independently adjustable left and right if your camper is not fairly equal weight on both sides. I understand that the campers with slide-outs really need this. With that much weight you should also upgrade shocks. I just put in Bilsteins and they are immediately noticeable, even though my stock ones were only about 8K miles old. I have heard great things about Rancho as well.

Good luck, Zeke

Thanks guys. The friend with the Ford just bought an 04 2500HD short box. He set his camper in and could not believe the difference between the Ford and the Chevy. On the Ford the springs would invert. This was when the Ford was new. With the new Chevy they just settle a bit. To say he is impressed would be a gross understatement!!

The F250 SD is actually sprung pretty light compared to a 2500HD. An F350 SRW would be better but still would squat more and been less stable than a 2500HD. Personally if I was going to buy a truck for a decent sized camper I would prefer a dually for stability anyway. --SS

I have a 11' pickup camper that I put in my 04 gmc cc long box it handled it all right but put the hitch to low to the ground to pull a trailer so I'm putting airbags to level out the truck to pull a trailer. I got the airbags from summit for $210. Edited by: edgey dmax
