: bad injector or bent rods????
600+duramax 04-19-2004, 11:31 PM Maybe someone on this board could help me out? My truck has a very rough idle more like a miss and it pumps out a lot of white smoke and it does not smell like coolant. When I drive it is normal no mis no white smoke. I just recently put in some bigger injectors from dr performance and they are supposed to be fine tested. I spoke to someone else today and they told me it could be that I shortened a rod but I figure if I did I would have a constant mis all threw the rpm range while driving.
Diesel Power 04-20-2004, 02:57 AM Did it happen as soon as you installed the new injectors? like immediately?
Also have you checked your balance rates on the new injectors w/ tech 2? did you happen to check the old ones just prior to replacing them?Edited by: Diesel Power
Mackin 04-20-2004, 06:24 AM Dr Performance
What did the good doctor perscribe for a remedy??
Smells of injector issue to me ....

dmaxalliTech 04-20-2004, 07:55 AM bigger injectors dump more fuel. fuel will smoke white when its unburned....
Michigana_Joe 04-20-2004, 08:51 AM The rough idle you are talking about -- have you tried a tune other than the 215? The new 215 tune does have idle lope... Could it be that and what dmaxalliTech said?
Micheal Tomac 04-20-2004, 09:26 AM sounds like an injector problem
Kennedy 04-20-2004, 10:13 AM If they are TESTED, there should also be a test sheet available.
While it is impossible to group them perfectly, they should all be very close. You'll find that some deliver a touch more at max psi than others, yet others deliver more than the rest at say 80%, but they should be grouped fairly well.
600+duramax 04-20-2004, 11:51 AM The good doctor has yet to return my calls the first set of injectors he sent me did not even make one hp over stock could of made a mistake and sent me some unmodified ones we installed the second set of injectors on the truck in the middle of doing the trans so the truck sat for a couple of weeks but once we got it going and put it on the dyno the injectors made a difference of 40 hp stock with no programmer and no hp difference when adding the programmer but on n2o made an extra 100 they were claimed to make from 80 to 100 hp on a stock truck when I called him and told him he said I was lying or that the guys working the dyno did not know what they were doing Then I had some issues with the converter so the truck had to stay at the shop to take down the trans after it was fixed we put the truck back on the dyno to tune the n2o after a couple of pulls we noticed it was missing so we turn it off and let sit for five minutes start back up the same mis and white smoke. It did not do this when we first started and ran the truck. It also does it in stock form.
Diesel Power 04-20-2004, 11:54 AM what are your balance rates? perhaps its possible one of the injectors was damaged in the reman process?
CPMac 04-20-2004, 12:24 PM What rpm and boost were you turning the nos on at? My bet is your problem is worse than an injector even though an injector may have helped with the problem.
600+duramax 04-20-2004, 03:12 PM have not checked the balance rates on the injectors but will do a compresion check today before we check the injectors. The n02 was turned on at full throttle in fifth gear tcc locked.
Kennedy 04-20-2004, 03:18 PM Try shutting them down individually with the Tech 2 and see what happens to the smoke. The hard part is if there is more than one bad unit as you can only kill one at a time with the Tech 2.
Balance rates MAY shed some light, but can also steer you off in another direction, as many other factors can affect balance. Mine will be installed soon, and then I can evaluate injectors and compare to balance rates...
IIRC we talked on the phone prior to your project???
JRmac 04-20-2004, 06:11 PM My VOTE????http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif.........It's the rods............ouchhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif..........I really really hope I'm wrong.Edited by: JRmac
600+duramax 04-20-2004, 06:47 PM checked compression and one cylinder was low 300 every other one 385 to 375 I guess 750 hp is the limit for the weak link the rods. who makes good rods for these motors? I have a spare motor but I want to put good rods and some other goodies before I put it in.Edited by: 600+duramax
Kennedy 04-20-2004, 07:10 PM Just curious, does it make good power?
dmaxalliTech 04-20-2004, 09:36 PM That is some major HP. I dont know of anybody producing rods for these yet. I dont think we have really needed them..... at least until you pushed that envelope (and others too) that much higher. Perhaps a good shop with some experience can make a set up?
Kyle03D 04-20-2004, 09:41 PM How many hours does/should it take for 8 rod replacements.
After you shorten one, such as possiblely he did in this case, what else is damaged?
Just curious
dmaxalliTech 04-20-2004, 09:43 PM Kyle, if its just a rod bent, there shouldnt be much else damaged, but that would depend on how it bent too. I would carefully look at all the pieces of that cyls, prolly would want to replace the piston as well. As far as replacing all the rods. I would bet book time is no less then 30 hours. It is around 25 just to replace the headgaskets
Kyle03D 04-20-2004, 09:53 PM I think I'm just gonna not bend one, it will be easier that way.
I would love to build one of these motors on a stand from the ground up. I wish all the r&d was already done like the cummins. I couldn't just order a cam and springs(maybe that isn't needed). The rest could be done, o-ring, cut pistons,SOME BETTER RODS, oh yeah, crazy sh*t. TWINShttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif.
I'd have me a trailor queen pullin truck too!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Thumbs Up.gif
Of course, first step would be winning the lottery, or....Any sponsors???
Yep, I'm Dreaming aloud.
dmaxalliTech 04-20-2004, 10:39 PM Kyle.... Wake up dude!!!
lol
600+duramax 04-20-2004, 11:17 PM I have a spare motor going in the truck tomorrow so the when in the truck will get taken apart and gone threw I will be looking for a place to make me some rods.Kennedy the truck made 750.
Max Power 04-20-2004, 11:28 PM This is on an 04? http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ouch.gif Warranty? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clown.gif
Trippin 04-20-2004, 11:46 PM Just say "C A R R I L L O". Best in the business. They will make a rod for anything!

I had a feeling you might know a little something on the subject. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif
600+duramax 04-21-2004, 12:41 AM It is an 04 but they are just going to put stock rods and I will bend them again I do not want that I would rather put good rods like they should of done from the factory.I was thinking also adding some lower compression pistons.Edited by: 600+duramax
OC_DMAX 04-21-2004, 08:53 AM It is an 04 but they are just going to put stock rods and I will bend them again I do not want that I would rather put good rods like they should of done from the factory.
Lets see,,,,, the stock motor makes 240 RWHP. Your pushing 750 RWHP. I would think the stock rods held up pretty good (if that is whats wrong)http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif.
How far does everyone here expect the stock components on these engines to go?Edited by: OC_DMAX
Kennedy 04-21-2004, 09:54 AM Im curious how it runs now. Have you driven it or tested it to see if it has falen off, or just condemned it?
Even a stock comparo would be interesting...
Bronco 04-21-2004, 11:22 AM Assuming a rod is bent ( not shortened at a machine shop) it could of came from hydrolocking rather than to much HP.
Untill the motor is disasembled there is no way to really no what is going on. Squared piston, cracked/bent ring, hole in piston top, bad rod, main journal bearing and the list goes on.Edited by: Bronco
600+duramax 04-21-2004, 11:25 AM no I have driven it and actually I do not think it has fallen of at all. This might sound crazy to some but not to me I plan on taking it to the track tonight to make a pass.I will let you guy's now if it lets go???
CPMac 04-21-2004, 12:28 PM My bet is driveablility is your only problem as hp will probably be very close to before your problem.
600+duramax 04-21-2004, 05:03 PM CPMac do you know someone that has had this problem.
sdaver 04-22-2004, 09:41 PM 750 with what mods other than injectors?
White Duramax 04-22-2004, 10:28 PM 600, check out the post about adding a motor to my list of carnage, he made 575hp before the problems on the dyno and made 522 on a different dyno after the problems, it smoked white pretty bad at idle but that was pretty much the only symptom, did you check your balance rates, his rates were from 15 down, with at least 4 of them being out.
Micheal Tomac 04-23-2004, 10:28 AM to add to what White Duramax said, the guy he is talking about was also running 100% methanol as a secondary fuel
Micheal Tomac 04-23-2004, 10:33 AM have you checked out the balance rates with a tech II yet?
600+duramax 04-23-2004, 11:51 AM no did not check the balance rate cause I think the problem jumped out at us two rods out the side of the motor guess we found the problem. Thanks for the reply's.
