: Poor Start + White smoke = WTF

Recently when i start my truck regardless of temperature it runs real rough for a couple of seconds and blows white exhaust, untill it evens out, then she runs just fine. It will start like this whether is has been overnight or a half an hour. Only if you shut if off and start it up about 5 minutes after it will not start wierd. No DTC's are setting. The lift pump is working as it should. It almost seems as if the timing is advanced at start up then it readjusts when running. Any idea on what could be the cause?

Sounds to me you could have a head gasket leaking anti-freeze into one of the cylinders. After setting a while the coolant leaks into cylinder and when you start the truck it has to burn or evaporate the coolant in the cylinder thus the white smoke or STEAM. Once it is all gone then it will run god. Had the same thing happen to me. Didn't finally figure it out until I noticed my coolant level had dropped enough to show my engine running hottter than normal. Investigation finally proved out a head gasket leak.

Sounds more like the glows are going out / or some of them are already out. Do a quick search on testing glow plug or check in the FAQ there should be a how to test glow plug thread.

The glow plugs seem to be working, that was my first thought, the relay is turning on at least. But i will have to look further into it; i figured it shouldn't matter at 70+ degrees outside; but check the simple stuff first i suppose. Also so far the coolant level has remained steady.

you can have an injector leak down and a cyl is flooded with fuel, causing the smoke (does the smoke smell like diesel?)

Gotta test 'em. Lookin' at them from the steering wheel only doesn't count as testing them. Gotta check each one's resistance to see if it's good or not. Also need to verify power making it to the glow plugs.

Sorry it has been a while since i got back about my problem but here is what is up so far. About a week after i made this original post the problem stoped, startup was just fine. It was ok for about 2 weeks, then it started doing it again. The glow plugs are working, power is making to them and they are good. Also to the comment about a possible blown head gasket, i have lost no coolant and have not observed any bubbling in the reservoir. Again I ask the possibilty of timing being off for some reason as a result of a failing sensor causing injection timing to advance to far. Possibly a sensor is going bad, either CPS or OPS. Any other ideas/ cures would be greatly appreciated.

I'm new here and definitely not an authority. When I start cool mornings right now it does smoke whitish/bluish until the final cylinder starts to fire, then the smoke stops 'immediately' if this is the way it stops for you it should be glow plug related. IMO. Those who know more feel free to discount my diagnosis.

If its intermediant and shaking the harness does not help make the problem reappear, then I'll stand on sticky injectors, some cleaner/lub may help
also advanced timing helps to cure white smoke on start up. and seeing as it seemed to only act up on start up (just re-read your first post) I doubt it is any sensors
my two cents

Here is the wierd the thing, when it has sat overnight or long enough for the engine to cool completely down, no problems. But when it has been running and coolant temps are in excess of 160 degrees F, when it is started then the engine stumbles and puts out white smoke. That is what really makes me scratch my head and lean toward a sensor malfunction causing injection timing to be too far advanced or something related to injection timing.

Figured I would throw an update everyones way, in case anyone else runs in to this they may know where to look. I fixed the problem, it was a failing Crank Position Sensor, it was not picking up the refereces on the reluctor wheel, however not enough to set a code.
