: Installed John Kennedys Lift Pump Kit
tbrowne 04-19-2004, 02:29 PM I installed John Kennedy's lift pump kit on Saturday and the truck runs great with the kit installed. The hardest part of the job was removing the plug where the oil pressure sending unit was installed. I was beginning to think I'd break the tool before plug would come loose; however, it finally broke free. Looks like the factory used red loctite on it. It also turns out that installing the wiring harness was the easiest part. This is a great quality kit with nothing but the highest quality parts.
I feel better knowing the fuel filters are bathed in fuel and that the fuel will probably be cleaner when it reaches the injectors. I've had the Mega filter installed post OEM for about eight months now and air was an issue. I hope that problem is solved with this kit - I'll let you know when I have more miles on the truck.
Sorry, there are no pictures. I was going to take photos of the install but that didn't prove practical after the first half hour or so. I was so caked with fuel oil and grime, I didn't want to handle the camera.
Thanks for another fine product John!

Amric 04-19-2004, 07:25 PM I know it is too late for install pics, but what about post install pics? Do you think the wiring part of the kit could be used with a larger pump. I want to run a Holley Black pump, but would like to buy the wiring and perhaps even hoses in kit form.
Kennedy 04-20-2004, 10:25 AM The pump and fittings have been ready for some time now, it's the control harness that has been the holdup. I want it to prime at key up, yet not run when no oil psi. The manual push button was final hold up as it was only working with key on, and I'd rather have it available with key off at service time.
This is not a simple relay harness, rather a digital circuit in order to get the prime function. The prime is not necessary, but definitely useful, and something that is common on all EFI vehicles, including the 96+ 6.5 diesel. Should handle 15 amps w/o incident. Same relay as we use on the HB kits.
I installed John Kennedy's lift pump kit on Saturday and the truck runs great with the kit installed.
did the truck not run good before the lift pump, or are you saying you can tell a difference ?Edited by: ski1
tbrowne 04-21-2004, 10:58 AM The truck has always run well. I didn't mean to imply it ran better - just that the pump hasn't created any problems that I can discern.
If the pump does in fact cure the air problems I had prior to the pump install, then I'll definately say it runs better. Give me a couple of weeks to make a decision on that one.
tbrowne 05-17-2004, 03:29 PM Thought I'd post an update on the lift pump, which has been in service now for about a month. The air problems that plagued the post oem Mega filter are definitely gone. I've had zero no starts to date and when I open the bleeder screw on the Mega, I get fuel immediately. There is no air trapped in either filter. Truck still runs great.
JEBar 05-17-2004, 05:50 PM had a local mechanic install one of John's lift pump kits in my truck today ... good to hear yours has apparently solved the air problems ... leaving on an 8,000+ mile tow on May 29th, will most certainly know how it works on our truck well before we get back!

YZF1R 05-17-2004, 06:53 PM I'm installing my kit from Kennedy Diesel this Friday. I'll also let you all know how it works out, but I don't think I will have anything unusual to report. No reason why it won't work as advertised. I will be happy to not have to prime anymore and also that most air is not being out gassed for any minor engine running problems.

Kennedy 05-20-2004, 09:42 AM So far, between the air bypass orifice, and lift pump, air accumulation has been a non issue, and filters are full inall test cases!
Horse Trainer 05-20-2004, 07:02 PM JK - is the wiring harness ready yet? I am lazy!
dirty old man 05-20-2004, 10:12 PM JK, will this lift pump work in conjuction with a Nicktane filter kit installed as written up in Nick's instructions?
Diesel Power 05-20-2004, 10:37 PM dirty old man- you should be able splice into the 7/16" ID line and push/clamp it over the fittings john supplies. i don't see why it wouldn't work.

his wiring harness is not only ready, it is a truly well designed/built unit ... install of the harness is really simple

Carbon04 05-21-2004, 09:46 AM What psi can be expected with this kit? Does it have any pressure under full throttle or does it zero out? I am in the market, just looking at all the options.

Jim,
Glad you like the harness. The production units promise to be much more refined yet! Happened across a customer who does auto electronics, and surface mount board stuff, and we are in the midst of setting up a revised unit all in one module rather than a divorced relay.
Carbon,
The lift pump that these guys are installing is NOT a high performance unit. It is just a simple pump to keep psi on the fuel under most conditions. I HAVE run this pump on my truck, and layed down 450RWHP without incident, but it will cross into vacuum.
I have another pump(s) being tested at present that will be much more capable. I am waiting for a new prototype that can deliver a bit more pressure. These will not likely be ready for quite some time yet.
Are you coming to the K&S dyno Saturday?
Amric 05-21-2004, 10:47 AM When your harness is completed, will it handle enough amperage that I could use it with a high volume pump (200gph+), or is it only for the pump you are currently supplying?
Carbon04 05-21-2004, 10:53 AM John,
I can't, I have to go to a f%$#ing weddinghttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif. From what I gather there should be more than a few high HP DMAX runs to give the dodges a run for there money. It should be interesting. Bring your Digi cam and take pics. I'll send you a disc to burn. Thats about as close as I am going to get this time.
TraceF 08-26-2004, 11:08 AM Is the kit ever coming out? John?
Time delay relay (http://www.aaroncake.net/circuits/relaytim.htm)
BassinRVer 08-26-2004, 02:02 PM JK, you got alot of people still waiting on you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
John may be enjoying life like the rest of us.
All in good time
dmaxalliTech 08-26-2004, 03:55 PM last I heard he was working on improving the unit to handle higher amperage.
John
Did you think of a check valve to hold fuel after all filters. Cat makes a good one that takes minor pressure to open. It comes on all the 6.25 bore cats. may do away with the fuel up before start.

JEBar 08-26-2004, 06:32 PM I installed one of John's lift pumps/wiring kits on our '02 D'max a few days prior to leaving on a 10,000+ mile cross country tow .... haven't had to bleed my truck's post OEM Mega filter since ... have around now put on 13,000+ miles since the install and his system has worked flawlessly ... have found a major side benefit is with the lift pump I no longer have to put the fuel when I replace a filter, I just open the bleed screw and push a button to turn on the lift pump

This is nice but I haven't ever had to bleed. The air in the pre filter bothers me though.
Kennedy 08-27-2004, 09:32 AM Looking at beefing the control unit up. I just don't want someone to hook it up to one of those coffe grinder pumps and have problems
Also looking at enclosures like the VA Smart box casing etc.
I have a small batch of the first sample run that I'm looking to finish soon. They'll handle the AC Delco pump, and my soon to be released "magic" pump, but the OPS will be open terminal spade lug as these aren't designed to run with the sealed connectored OPS.
I've had one running non stop for a few weeks now on my display stand w/o incident.
In a nutshell, my electronics guy is looking to "double up" on some of the components and should have time to do the layout late next week...
ratlover 08-27-2004, 12:24 PM Will this majic pump and proto types or final versions of the controler be available to oggle labor day?
