: New LLY owners - check your rear diff fluid!
WitsEnd 04-19-2004, 11:22 AM I have had my LLY since mid Feb. I finally got around to checking my rear diff fluid this weekend and found it to be 1 quart low! There were not any signs of fluid leaking, so I believe it left the factory 1 quart low. Hope the 2500 miles I have on mine while down 1 quart of diff fluid didn't cause any long term damage!
TNRGreene 04-19-2004, 11:26 AM Changed mine on Friday & found that mine was also low. Fixed nowhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
emerick115 04-19-2004, 11:37 AM Changed mine already, never checked to see if it was low. There was a lot of fine metal flakes on the magnet. Glad I changed it. Normal break in material.

Dura_Mike 04-19-2004, 01:10 PM Low axle lubricant level is a well document problem on almost all 2004 trucks. Both my front and rear diffs were 1 quart low. My "stealer" told me they checked all fluid levels before I took delivery...

Harley99 04-19-2004, 04:52 PM After reading all the reports of low fluids, I took mine back to the Dealer to have my free oil changed done. I only have 700 miles but the peace of mind was well worth it...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

DLAnderson 04-20-2004, 06:25 AM Guess it won't matter too much for me... re-gearing on Thursday. I have read simular threds earlier, and reminded the stealer to have it topped before leaving the lot. But never checked up on them, fully knowing I was going to change the gearing with my lift.
TCosgrove 04-20-2004, 06:44 AM I picked mine up on Feb 8 and told the dealer to make sure the differentials were checked. He said they were. When I got home I checked them my self and found them low. You should have seen the look on his face when I was back there the next morning. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif
I can only thank this forum for all the info. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif

grizzy 04-22-2004, 08:03 AM A couple of days ago I called my dealer on another topic and mentioned that my rear fluid was about 1/2" below the upper plug. He said they have a special (tool) the have to use to measure the fluid level. I've been doing this a long time and assumed it should be filled to the upper plug. Is there something different these days? How far below was your fluid? Did the dealer fill it up to the upper plug? Thankshttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif Grizzy

GMC Cowboy Cadilliac 04-22-2004, 09:58 AM They do come from the factory a little low and your dealer is suppose to take care of all that at PDI ( Post Delivery Inspection) before you take delivery...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif
elDuaLLY 04-23-2004, 08:47 PM Grizzy mine was a good 1 1/2" to 2" below the plug when I checked it. Didn't check it when I got it home from the dealer but would assume they filled to the plug. I think they were a bit surprised that I even checked it to begin with http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ouch.gif. Guess I made the look bad when I told them I heard about it on the internet..http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Wacko.gif
