: Im i the only one here that uses truck for Work?
Turfmower 04-17-2004, 06:16 PM 90 % of the post are how big tire, what oil , how do I use a tool. I can see Rv guys need it to pull their campers or boats. I just want to know why someone that isn't pulling Trailer, hauling, or using for work has a deisel truck? Also why short bed? I would never get one you might as well have a S10. I was looking for a used truck for service. My dealer had lot of decked out short bed. but no long beds.
Mackin 04-17-2004, 06:24 PM Do you have to use it every day to qualify ?? Cause I picked up some staples the other day for the guy in shipping ...

tanner 04-17-2004, 06:34 PM I dont use mine for work, well I do put about 3000 lbs of deer corn and protien feed about once every 3 weeks.. I have a short bed too... Ohh I haul a 150lbs rottweiler too..
Why does it matter though if that is what you want get it.. I have alot of things I dont actually "need", but hey I work my ass off 6 days a week.. If I want it I am gonna get it.Edited by: tanner
KWalk 04-17-2004, 06:55 PM When did anyone ever say they weren't using their trucks for work??
You are not the only one who does...but thanks for telling everyone!!
Kal-El 04-17-2004, 08:11 PM lets see does mine work, o its not a diesel though,
hauls 150 bails of hay about once a month on a trailer
hauls about 150 bails of straw on a trailer about every month and a half
hauls 550 gallons of water 3 times a week
pulls a trailer with 2 horses well over 1000 lbs each
gets me to work every day, 7 days a week usually
that doesnt even count all the farm equipment it moves around and when we goe somewhere and i drive we take my truck. I would not trade this truck for the worl it gets used and never have a problem with it, dont have a problem with the taigate cables, or what people call week sheet metal, and yes the bed gets used just as much as it pulls. I am amazed when i get water and we are waiting in line the truck is always getting compliments from ford and dodge owners, so I think I work mine.
Mackin 04-17-2004, 08:43 PM It wasn't just a average box of staples I think it was like 5000 Ct ....

ROBZUK 04-17-2004, 09:00 PM I guess this is another one of those " useless commuter truck " threads. I haul with mine, 4 yards of mulch today, my Samurais and any other piece of junk that I deem suitable to piss off the neighbors by being in the yard!

Kal-El 04-17-2004, 09:26 PM hey mackin i hope you had someone carry those to the truck for you, wouldnt want to throw out the back, and dont set them on the tailgate would take awhile to pick them all up and put them back in the box if the cables broke.
Mackin 04-17-2004, 10:26 PM I got VRstraps no worry there ....
Next time I'll have one of the guys come out with the Fork Lift ,thanks for the heads up ....

you can't fit 4 yard in a pickup un less you have sides on it and make 2 trips. I have 2 yard mason dump body with side and only get 5 yards per load.

Duallyvette 04-18-2004, 01:48 AM I haul my golf clubs in my CC dually. The back seat is for my jacket. A purpose for every option !!!
Dmax Tim 04-18-2004, 07:29 AM Turfmower, I'm getting a GMC in a month or so and trading in my 04.
It has been worked, pulling a 13-15k trailer so it is broke in.
If u don't want all the fancy stuff my father in law is going to get a new LS soon and it has hauled 100 bags of bean seed (50#) in bed many times, his is also an 04 Chevy CC D/A.

That's funny Kal-El. I hauled a pallet of special ordered porcelain floor tile last week. We didn’t have a forklift at the site so we had to hand unload the boxes of tile. After I had stacked about 15 boxes of tile (about #30 a box) on the tailgate I remembered the recall on the tailgate straps. Couldn’t get those boxes of tile off the tailgate quick enough. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gifEdited by: Lakedaisy

HD4fun 04-19-2004, 02:47 AM These trucks are way too nice to be working with. If I was going to use my truck for work and get it all dinged up and sh*tty looking, I would definitately own a f*rd or d*dge.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
But wait, there's more -
After I'm done eating, I come out of the restaurant and notice the valet parked my truck right up front w/the beemers and mercedes.
21mpg on the weekend trip to SF.
Going over the mountain, we hit some snow. Besides the fact I hit a button and get 4x4, in case one of those crazy California drivers spins out or does some other crazy thing, I'd take my truck over anything else on the road(besides a semi) for the safety of my family.
Serious power upgradeability for a fraction of the cost of gassers.
My wife looks way cool when she's driving it.
The kids always want to take my truck whenever we go somewhere.
Cool looks from the chicks. (ok, that one may be stretching it a little.)
Can pull just about anything on any lot from any RV dealership.
And finally, I LOVE THE SMELL OF DIESEL IN THE MORNING!!!
'Nuf said.
So, did I miss anything?
BlueOx03 04-19-2004, 07:17 AM Yeah, if you want a good work truck that can take a beating....buy a Ford. If you want a cadillac that has a diesel and looks like a pick up, buy a GMC.
03GMC2500HD 04-19-2004, 10:19 AM Had my HD over a year now and still have yet to put a ball in the hitch! I do haul some impressive cargo though, wife (105lbs), two sons, 5yr old (45lbs), 2 yr old (28lbs) and on occasion I do run a round with my lab (110lbs) in the back. Kinda cool my dog out weighs my wife! That is a grand total of just under 500lbs and belive it or not...all this weight with only a 6.0L and a shortbed!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
So if I get a new vette that is built to run like a mofo, does that mean I need to run 200mph everywhere I go. Is there anywhere to even run a vette (legally) the way its was built to be run???
Chevyfreek 04-19-2004, 12:38 PM I use my truck everyday to get back and forth to work everyday. It does see it's fare share of carrying a load. Mostly during the spring and summer months when we pull a camping trailer and carry all of the gear, firewood, etc. It see a lot of miles every year and that is just the way I like it. I bought this truck for what it can do and to drive it, a lot. I try to keep it in as good of shape as possible for a truck that is used everyday. It still looks good all cleaned up. My girlfriend does get more looks in the truck than I do though. Not like I mind, much!
terel 04-19-2004, 01:40 PM Turf,
I don't tow much, but so what?
I have an 03 Yamaha Grizzly quad that I take hunting. It fits perfectly in my shortbed. My wife and I also enjoy cycling together. If we want to get off our usual paths, we load the bikes up in the bed and drive wherever we want to. I could do this in an S-10, but would YOU want to? Actually, I'm not sure a quad would fit in an S-10...
Moreover, I like the mileage I get in my duramax. I recently drove to LA and experienced 22.8 mpg on I-5. This is with Juice/Attitude on level 5, air conditioning running. I also run 285s, so once you convert, I probably got nearly 24 mpg. Last I checked, you get less than half this mileage in an 8100 Vortec. With gas pushing $2.75 a gallon....you do the math.
Moreoever, the performance upgrades on today's TDs are tough to pass up. Where else can you get an extra 125 horsepower and 300 pound feet of torque for roughly $800? To get this much additional power out of another vehicle, you'd spend $20,000.
My SLT equipped truck has all the features and ammenities of a modern-day german luxury car (except a sunroof). It's a plush vehicle to travel in. It's safe. AND...I can still throw a couple of yards of gravel in the back when I need to.
I own the truck I do because it's the one I wanted. That's enough.

LMFAO!!!
I usually just drive back and forth to work. I had to order mine to get a longbed. I bought it becasue when I get a toy hauler and a boat I want a nice truck to tow with. Plus I used to drive tractor/trailer and love the power and torque of a diesel. Going back to a gasser just isn't an option.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif
Hired Gun 04-19-2004, 04:21 PM I use mine to haul equipment for dealers. Usually gross between 10, and 20,000 on mine 3 to 4 time a weeks for the last 20,000 miles. The trailer weighs 10,000 empty. I tow with the edge juice on setting 2. I go down to 1 when I hit steep grades like Jelico in Tenneesse.
Never skips a beat.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif
McRat 04-19-2004, 07:33 PM I actually needed a Mini-Van, but I screwed up when I ordered, and they shipped a Duramax 3500 instead.
I was going to complain, but it actually makes a better minivan than most minivans do.
Oh well. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif
DURAMAXED03 04-19-2004, 08:07 PM I work hard 12 hrs a day six days a week. I want go blow my money on a $45,000 dollar diesel truck that hardly ever see's towing and like's to eat mustangs for lunch......my choice. Besides when I go to buy my boat it's nice to know I can go for the really big one....and not have to be limited to my trucks towing.
dieselmax82 04-19-2004, 09:38 PM My father has the duramax mason dump and I have the pickup. Work every day with them. We're mason contractors. Truck will last that type of work longer than any ford or dodge.
And the caddilac ride is great compared to the 83' 6.2 and 86 dump 6.2.
I bought mine to tow the toys for playtime on the weekends. I don't need the longbox because I have plenty of trailers to haul my toys. Plus the shortbox fits in my garagehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif. I do like the longbox, but it sure is nice to be able to park in the garage now. The previous 4 years I had crew cab duallys, and it wasn't even an option to park inside. I guess everyone has their own version/vision of what a work truck is and should be used for, this is mine.Edited by: 338_
I think someone just wanted to get a thread going.
Bronco 04-20-2004, 09:56 AM Really though, by the answers it is obvious not many people use there trucks for "work". This means that the truck is an itrigal part of the job and not just a comuter vehicle.
A very relevent question because a guys modifications and accesories will be different.
As far as the long bed/shortbed goes? I work with my truck everday, well except when playing hooky to go fish. I chose a short bed extended cab to keep the over all length down, while still giving me the room I need. Things get long when you are towing a trailer into residential neighbor hoods and job sites. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gifEdited by: Bronco
McRat 04-20-2004, 11:00 AM The CC LB setup is too long. They should have moved the axle forward 1 foot. My E-350 EXT is nearly as long, but since the wheelbase is much shorter, it actually will turn around on a residential street.
This comes into play with a work truck, as you cannot park in all parking lots, nor back into units in an alley to unload.
If there was one thing I would change about my truck, that would be to get the short wheelbase. It's a PITA. The nice thing about the long WB is that you can put heavy loads near the cab, and it disperses the load onto both axles. 2500lb doesn't even phase it. Feels like you are unloaded.
Mackin 04-20-2004, 12:57 PM I'm with him on the "shorty" ,their worthless for any kinda work unless you own a trailer .... Long bed or bust, that's my moto .... To long my toilet you just can't stop popping curbs ...
I'll have some women school bus driver teach you guys sumtin ...

AndrewFessler 04-20-2004, 02:08 PM I use my truck for everything from daily commuting to my job as well as for my work hobby and pulling toys. :)
http://photos.onlinedesk.net/silverado/equipment/thumb-dscn4138.jpg
I used to use my 94 Chev Diesel dumptruck to pull my equipment around, but it is such a DOG compared to my Duramax.
flhrciblueice 04-21-2004, 04:48 AM I tow/haul toys(Harley, old farmalls), cattle, feed, seed, hay, fertilizer, backhoe, tractors, and when on a job I carry my gang box for all the extra tools and wire spools. It also pulls stumps or a stuck tractor out occasionally. I also "commute" to work(2.2 miles) in my truck. Whenever I take the wife and young 'un somewhere, we used to take the '99 blazer. I can't stand to do that now and wife can't either because the CC has so much more room. However, IMO, it doesn't matter how you use your truck. If you want it and can afford it, get it. Yes, my truck gets worked almost daily, but I don't frown on someone who just got it to be used as a commuter/grocery getter or whatever else. If the dmax is not offered in a suburban in a couple of years, my wife will probably be getting a cc sb 2500hd with the d/a combo. And, when she turns her back, it will get worked a little.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif Turfmower, I couldn't find a long bed crew cab on the lots anywhere, so I ordered one.
ratlover 04-21-2004, 09:01 AM I work it when ever I can durring the winter when we get snow.

Micheal Tomac 04-22-2004, 01:02 AM My "commuter" truck tows a heavy trailer with pulling tractors and weights inside (20-26K combined), truckpulls, dragraces, plays in the sand dunes, and serves as a daily driver, grocery getter, that can haul up to 6 people if needed. Yes, I have a short box, but if I can't fit it in there I have an open flatbed and an enclosed goosneck trailer that can haul it. The short box is also nice in mall parking lots and the few occasions per year I need to park in a parking ramp/garage.
