Hello, my name is Doug Valley and I just joined upon purchase of my 3rd Diesel truck. My 1st diesel truck was a new 1984 6.9L F250 Supercab, 4 speed 4wd. My second was a used 1990 F350 7.3L with a Gale Banks Turbo, 5 speed 4WD Crewcab. My current truck is a 2006 F350 6.0L Turbo Diesel 6 speed Dually Crewcab 4WD. So far it has been pretty amazing. I tow a 48’ enclosed race car trailer so I needed the Dually option for stability but I was worried about how a 6.0L was going to compare to the 7.3L I have, especially seeing it has the full Gale Banks turbo kit. Fear not the 6.0L is just as strong.

But the main reason I am joining versus just observing at this website is I have one problem with my diesel that I am looking for some advise on before I go back to the Ford Dealer.

The diesel makes a metallic squealing noise that is really annoying. It seems to be slightly temperature dependent. In March you couldn’t hear it until you had been at highway speed for 5 miles. Now in the warmer weather you can hear it immediately. When I 1st took it in for a few other minor issues the mechanic listened to it and his first impression was that it was a normal sound coming from the style of injectors I have on the 6.0 versus what they used on the 7.3. But when he studied it further he became suspicious that it was something else.

The sound is easily demonstrated by applying a very light throttle and then letting off. It will make the sound while lightly accelerating and then when you let off it will stay there for a 1/2 second and then disappear. It gives the impression that the back lash play in the motor allows something to get clearance so the rubbing goes away. It is a constant sound not a clapping on hammering sound like I would expect lifters to be doing. It can be heard as all rpm. levels, but the diesel sound starts to drown it out at higher rpm. It can be heard from the outside of the truck. It makes the sound when in neutral.

The service dept. did an investigation on their Oasis system and sure enough there is a description of this sound and how to make it occur that sounds like I am the author of the entry. The source is said to be the high-pressure fuel injection pump drive connection. As you may know this injector pump is in the lifter valley of the motor so it took 3 days to change out. They did this and claimed they fixed it. However I wasn’t even out of the parking lot and the sound seemed to be even worse to me.

These 6.0’s sure make a lot of noises: Also 2 to 4 turbo whistles noises that I think may be normal. And now since they have worked on the truck there are at least two additional noises that come and go.

So I figured before I go back and make a nuisance of myself, I would like to be armed with some background if possible. So hear goes:

Has any one had the same problem and what was the fix?

Has anyone heard this sound and does anyone think it is a normal sound from the injectors?

Is there any way for me to check on or research this issue on the Ford Oasis system? Or as a tech Service Bulletin?

Any history of this in the archives already?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A concerned Diesel owner,

Doug Valley

Most of the guys on here have the Duramax. Although they might be able to help you with general diesel questions specific concerns might be better answered at this site. For the Ford Diesel
