I decided that 120K was time to go end to end again with the drivetrain maintenance.

I do tranny fluid every 30k but everything else had about 100K on it. I must say that the Mobil 1 synthetic gear lube 75-90 is great stuff. I dumped the front first and it looked brand new!:cool2: I felt kinda bad draining it. The rear was a little darker but still pretty see through when I got it on my hands. The magnets had some fines but not much.

The transfer case was a different story. I think it was supposed to be a normal red tranny fluid but it was pretty dark and scary looking. I guess the ol' chain drive isn't really a close tollerance piece but the color of the fluid still raised an eyebrow. Kinda blackish red.

I refilled the transfer case with Amsoil synthetic ATF, the old style that was not so great in the ally. Never used it after I bought it.

I also had a vibration that started around 50 and got worse from there. So I pulled the driveshaft and sure enough the front u joint was frozen solid.

Long story short it took 3 hours and the 20 ton press at the family machine shop to get that joint out.:grd: I think it was an original.

Between all the lube changes and the u joint fix it is like a new truck!

Smooth as glass, I didn't realize but I was using the vibration as a speedometer, I would hit a certian vibration and my little brain would say "yep that's 70". Today I was zipping down the throughway and noticed I was doing 83 in a 65.

You can't tell that the truck is in 4x4 until the TC locks and then you get a slight vibration. You can't hear it and you can't feel it.

I never noticed how rough the drivetrain was until I fixed it.

Anyone that has high miles, don't forget the drivetrain!!:ro) Do some PM you never know what you will find.
