Has anyone on here installed one of these? Are they worth it? Any noticeable gains in Boost or HP?

Trippin

Installed? Yep!

Worth it? 50/50.... Some have used an adjustable needle valve to do the same thing.

Boost? Yep...adjustable for whatever boost you want. I personally made more torque but not much more peak HP. That may have been because I didn't have enough fuel to support the HP.

Adjustable Needle Valve??? Any write ups on that.

Yes,

what i did was install a T in my actuator line.. line goes to a needle valve... out of the needle valve goes into space.. adjust needle valve- the more you open it the more boost you get...

Got any pictures on how you set it up exactly.

Hey Powell you are in my neck of the world. Just live next door in Pearland. Have to hook up sometime and cause havoc. I have a white CC that is very loud. Talk to ya soon.

i beleive what trippin does. i have the acutator on mine and without more fuel i dont beleive there is any noticeble change. increasing psi will not make more horsepower, it might lower your egt's though as long as you dont add more fuel.

Mainemax, Don't waste your money you will have 10 pounds less boost after the install......had it...installed it......tested every which way i could think of........sold it

all you need to do is restrict the line going from the compressor housing to the wg actuator.. The more it is restricted, or the less air that gets to the wastegate the higher your boost is. you better believe that more boost= more power or you got other issues.

IMO, the banks is a waste of money. Boost control seems to be pretty good already with the stock setup, and increasing it can be done rather easily w/o spending so much money..

Can someone give me a picture of some info on how to make a manual boost controller so that I can install one on my Duramax.. I think my Power Pup could possibly make more power with a little bit of extra boost.

My buddy has a MBC on his 20th GTI. I'm wondering If I can use something of the same sort. Its just a bleeder with a ball and a spring, almost like a check valve. I'd like to see where to install this, and some info on how much boost you can actually run.

Keep in mind, there is more to it than boost psi. There is also drive psi or back pressure. The key is to find the maximum boost psi with acceptable turbine speed and minimal back psi. I've seen my boost up as high as 32psi with 42 psi drive pressure, AND I've seen 32 psi with my 50 psi drive psi gauge pegged. This was with the WG hose pinched.

I have a Banks actuator that I intend to install soon so I can try to creep my boost up safely...

you could always run 2 lines into the cab to a small regulator (like off a small compressor, etc). then you could adjust how much bleed you get off the actuator line.. dial-a-boost!

personally i think mine is fine once i set it.. works great! i will post some pics of my setup. note mine is meant to use the stock airbox, but i'll be adapting to to a different intake soon.

I know you can mess up your turbo after awhile, but if I were to drive home with my waste gate unattached (its a 20 mile drive.) will it hurt anything.

Diesel Power
04-20-2004, 07:51 PM
i never run w/ it unattached.,. just ask mackin what barking the turbo is all about.

i'm sure you could do it if your truck was completely stock as you might not be able to make enough boost to blow it up.. but why try?

I am waiting on my new turbo right now. I blew the seal out of it. $4700. is what I am being told if GM won't cover it.

Texas,

What did you do to blow the seal?

snapshot showed 36psi, full Throttle, and 90mph. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

Was atmospheric psi removed from that reading?

The Tech 2 reads total psi or 13-14ish at base, plus added boost...

No worries about turbo failure here, plenty of backups...

Powell

When I go WOT the Tech 2 reads about 26psi.. So Am I only making 13psi or so??? Even with my programmer it does it.

Texas,

Have you made any changes to your turbo (wastegate, or anything else)? Or is it just the programming? The highest I see is 32psi no matter what I do, but that is all from programming and drugs, with no turbo mods.

Kennedy,

Backups??

Kennedy, what do you have for exhaust? Looks like time for a larger turbine housing. Possibly the DP needs to be upgraded. Someone was saying the new downpipes will need a lift ot be installed, but only a body lift will help. My buddys truck has plenty of clearance for a 4" downpipe but i will never install another body lift..

I have a valve but never hit over 31 by my own choice.

I haven't played a ton with the turbo, but it does seem we could stand to open up the exhaust with higher HP levels. Been looking at this project, but truth be told, R&R on the turbo doesn't excite me...

sp33d,

I have a few spares laying around...

ATS was suppose to have released an adaptor plate so that a larger turbo could be installed. ATS is convinced the Turbo/intercooler are the new limiting factors. I have a feeling by late summer there will be a few different air enhancment options for the Dmax, other than just N02. Edited by: Bronco

well the easy way to tell would be an inlet air temp, and even better would be a before/after. Not being as familiar with diesels as I am with gas, i'm not sure what is acceptable as far as temperature is conserned.

Kennedy you probably have some SPA dual gauges you can rig up if you havent already. Sounds like you have it for the boost already.
