Part Two, tapping sounds more to be coming from the bell housing, possibly something to do with the torque converter:eek: Anybody out there with similar tapping sounds:help2:

check your converter to flex plate bolts, they could be loose, has the tranny ever been out? If not I could never imagine the bolts coming loose from the factory

tranny has never been out, 25k on the beast:cool: . still going to put the ears on it and see if I can really isolate it to any specific location. I have heard so many different tapping problems some sound 'right on' and others are way off. All of them are GOOD information regardless.

i thought i might have a cracked flywheel, or loose bolts also. it sounded like a loud tapping sound. this was on a 2000 obs 2500HD, but still the same sound from the same area. it turned out to be a spun bearing on the #8 cylinder connecting rod. it would be a good idea to drop your motor oil and see if you have a dicoloration, or shavings. good luck.

I had a knock that sounded like a lower end issue especially when your driving and it echoed off of center lane dividers etc. I put up with it and dealers telling me it was normal diesel noise for two years. I finally got a dealer to road test with which they agreed it was an extremely abnormal sound. Initially they diagnosed with GM's tech line to be a lower end problem and were going to tear it down but they ended up turning off injectors (techII) to eliminate the noise and narrowed it down to something associated with the #7 cylinder. They ended up replacing all the injectors on that side and it's like a completely new truck. At speed prior to this the truck sounded like it had a serious rod knock (not real noticeable at idle but only under load). Tech told us they had a truck come in that sounded like it was going to grenade and it ended up being injectors as well. I had no other symptoms like balance rates high, smoke, diesel in the crank etc. It ran fine, just sounded awful and low in the motor. Hope you find your problem.

My truck and from what I read all of these trucks have the tap that you can hear thru the drivers side wheel well but that is completely normal as you are aware of. The knock (like a bfh being hit on the motor from underneath) however, we would listen to it from underneath while the truck was in drive with the parking brake set, foot on the brake and someone giving it gas to put a load on the engine. This is really the only time we could get it to knock loudly since while in park idling or anywhere above idle it would not exhibit the knock if no load was on the engine. Everytime we would listen to it though while loading the engine it always sounded the loudest from underneath coming through the exhaust or from the bottom of the engine. My engine has always had great oil pressure, hot or cold and it has never knocked at idle so we kind of ruled that out since you would think that 2 years and 30K miles a rod knock would unload at some point or show a drop in pressure etc. My truck always sounded better under heavy acceleration especially when the pilot injection would turn off. Now it's like a new truck :D but I still find myself driving without the radio on just to make sure the knock doesn't return. It was the most frustrating 2 years with any vehicle that I've ever owned. Your best bet is to get them to road test and tell them that they will hear it best when it echos off of a center lane divider or a set of cars parked on the side of the road and take the ride with him. If they turn off the injectors one by one with the techII and your problem is with the injectors the difference is immediately apparent. I didn't go on the ride with them with the techII as the service foreman and the diesel tech went and were out for about 30-40 minutes.

Good Luck

Well i talked to the tech, and he says it sounds like injector(s) so it will be on a tech-2 this week! he knows that my balance rates are good....a little to good, like no + he says normal is +1-2 we will see.
