: Injector Flow Rate Test
alleghenyrose 04-24-2006, 06:09 AM Is the injector flow rate test the test the dealer uses to check for injector problems? If it is yes, what does it cost on average to have the test done?
I am not having any problems, but someone said in an earlier post that anyone who has not had injector problems is only kidding themselves because if they had a flow rate test, then they would know that they ARE having a problem, they just don't know it yet.
alleghenyrose 04-26-2006, 12:06 PM Doesn't anyone know the answer to my question??
McRat 04-26-2006, 12:12 PM Dealer prices will vary.
It's actually a balance rate test, and I believe you can do it with either EFILive or the Predator. Or a $3500 TechII dealer scantool.
Bodysurfer 04-26-2006, 12:15 PM Predator works good.
Rates:
-4 to +4 ...... idle in "park"
-6 to +6 ...... idle in "drive" WITH foot on brake
Start going out of those specs, could have heading for injector(s) problems.
heartlan 04-26-2006, 12:16 PM I had my truck checked out 2 weeks ago. Balance test was $65 and showed everything was okay. They told me that the other test they would do to see if the injectors were functioning properly was a return flow test which costs around $160. Lucky for me the return test show the left bank returning too much fuel so I didn't have to pay for the test and I got new injectors. Hope this helps you some.
patrick 04-26-2006, 01:03 PM balance rate test is with the tech 2 takes no time.
to flow test the injectors is another issue.

So I should have both tests done to verify my injectors. "Heartlan" had a good balance test, but a bad return flow test which resulted in new injectors.
I have 62K on my truck, have not noticed any problems, but should I have these two tests done just prior to 100K, or has the warranty expired already for me and my injectors?
heartlan 05-03-2006, 06:44 AM I toyed with the idea of only having the bablance test done and being on my way but glad I decided to let them dig further. I know the 200K warranty doesn't apply to the 03-04 Dmaxes however my dealer did tell me that they will apply that warranty in "Good Faith" if certain failures are noted. So I guess if you are over the 100K mark I would talk with the service manager and see what he can do for you. You might get lucky and get them replaced, should they need it.
On edit: I didn't see your mileage, sorry. I would have them done before the 100K comes up but not until right before. That's just my .02

This is good info to know as my dealer did not go farther than the balance rates. What type of symptoms did you have to get the injectors tested or were you just being proactive with the whole injector problem?

Just being proactive since I was about to run out of warranty. I was alsonly getting around 12 mpg so that was kind of a red flag for them I guess. Still getting that 12 mpg after the injectors though.

What were your rates at? (both idle and idle in D w/foot on brake)
As long as they far within those specs, your good. They will vary between injectors....they are balancing each other.
alleghenyrose 05-05-2006, 06:55 AM Thanks for the help. I have 62K and will spend around $200 to have both tests done around 95K just to see if I am in trouble. My mileage is better than most other people want to believe so I won't mention that.

Well cyl 1,2,3 were + 1.3 and 4,5,6 were .038 7,8 +1.3 some where in there... I had my injectors replaced I want to make sure they are working like they are supposed to..
HBruns 05-05-2006, 11:11 AM Unless you are having specific problems, a balance rate test is something you'll have to pay the dealer for. It cost me ~$80 to do, and they did not get it right the first time.
I brought my truck in just before the 36,000 mile warranty expired to have the dealer look the truck over for any issues. I asked them to check the balance rates, something that takes less than 5 minutes and you don't even have to raise the hood.
They did a fuel rail pressure check instead, plus they charged the ~$80 diagnostics fee. I had to take it back and raise a small stink to get the requested balance rate check done. I'm not sure if it was the service writer or the tech who was clueless.... maybe both.
I have heard you can take your truck to one of the better auto-parts & maintenance stores and have them do a scan for free.
winter200 05-05-2006, 11:55 PM So is there some point where it would be better to pay to replace the injectors before one has problems? Most of the time when I am pulling I am depending on the truck to keep moving. Can't waste time with the down time. I really don't like the idea of the crankcase filling with fuel etc. The dmax seems to be a very strong motor don't want to ruin it by not doing maintance. What is the difference between the injectors and when did they change. In 03-04?
